I stayed here for 3 nights after having to leave my previous backpackers due to no air conditioning.

For 35 USD a night, it was good value for money! I found the staff to be nice, although their English was not 100%. The food was cheap (around 500 LKR a meal) and the beer was also cheap (400 LKR for a big bottle). The garden is a nice place to sun bathe and the pool was nice too!

The hotel is right behind the beach, in between the train tracks - maybe a 30 second walk. The trains pass frequently during the day, about every 20 minutes, they are loud, however I liked it - it was a very unique and 'local' scene to watch. They stop around 11pm and only once did one train wake me up; I stayed in the top floor facing the tracks.

The air conditioning in the room was fantastic, it had a fan also (if you stay here, or anywhere in the country, you must have A/C - a fan only just will not do, learn from my mistake). The room was big and the bed and bathroom was fine. However, the TV was on the wardrobe so I imagine it to be hard to watch (I did not watch the TV). The safe in the room did not work and there was no fridge.

The main issue, which seems to be common going by the reviews was the bugs. Bugs did seem to appear in certain areas that were not there when I woke up in the morning, but would be there when I came back in the evening. Mainly they were dead, sometimes alive. I do not understand why they were only in a certain area. I was concerned about staying here for that precise reason, however for the price I paid I accepted it - the cheap food, drink and pool makes up for it. Breakfast was included also, that gave me a good start to the day, breakfast was nice, eggs, fruit and juice.

The hotel staff also sorted me out on a tour of the elephant orphanage, a tea plantation, the botanical gardens, Kandy and a temple. The guy who does it was nice, and his English was near enough fine. You pay 90 USD for the car, and it works out at 1 person = 90 USD, 2 people = 45 USD etc. He can take up to 3 people. His name is Vipula, and phone number +94 775427182.

It's a 16 hour day tour you must do! (Bring trousers/shorts that go below the knee to enter the temple & you pay separate for the elephant orphanage (2000 LKR for westeners, 500 LKR if not) and the temple was 1000 LKR and 500 LKR depending on westener/non-westener.

The room was secured with a lock on the door, however the windows did not shut properly but this was not a problem, I felt safe here.

Tips:

- The hotel only takes local currency, so bring your bank card or get money exchanged (airport has excellent exchange rates, you can also get a sim card with loads of data and minutes for 10 USD there also).

- The tour guide does take USD and LKR.

- You MUST get an A/C (air conditioned) room, I cannot stress the importance of this.

- The tour guide also does airport transfers (3500 LKR) however if you get a tuck tuck it'll be around 2500 LKR and an Uber will be about 2200 LKR depending on what car type you take.

- Remember the sun cream!

I would stay here again no problem at all.

I spent four wonderful days at Ranveli and felt very safe and relaxed considering I'm a single female who was on a long weekend business trip. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating to my demands. The room was very clean and comfortable with both a fan and A/C as well as a cable TV, fridge, sofa and a lockable wardrobe (however, not all rooms are like this). Breakfast was delicious, great WiFi connection in the lobby and the swimming pool was cool (they also allowed me to continue swimming after it was closed at 7 pm).

The location of hotel is great as its just seconds away from Mount Lavinia Beach, and a 15 minute walk to the town or a very short 3 wheeler drive away. The town is great for shopping both western and eastern styles and same with food choices. You'll find a great night life on the beach with restaurants, bars and live music. Personally, I found that the railway line that separated the beach and the hotel gave the location personality and the passing trains weren't a bother what so ever as it was very interesting to watch.

I felt very well looked after and comfortable in this hotel and would recommend it to everyone to stay if you're looking for good value for money, clean, comfortable and friendly service!

During my last days vacation in Srilanka, I decided to ended in Mount Lavinia, because of geographic place. It was a good place to relax after long 7 days tour in different city of Srilanka.
Ranveli beach resort, was my destination, & it was the best choice I've made. Great view form the room, the wild Indian Ocean & the famous Mount Lavinia Hotel, Clean & Wide room. Perfect service. It offer B&B with every reservation, you can add as well HB or FB.
A laundry service available. 100 ruppes (0.76$) per piece

A tiny problem, it's located near the rail station, so you can hear the train every time it pass by.

I've stayed at this place twice, first time it was good but cannot say it was comforting, Since I'm not a much of a complainer I did not complain about Air condition issue but still i asked the room boy to fixed it for me. Stayed there for five days first time but they couldn't fix. Electricity went out 2 days for 3 times. But Last time I stayed there was horrifying. when I called up and made reservations they told me a different price but when I went there they gave me a different price. I explained to receptionist that I will stay for 1 night and will check out next day, but still they charged same amount. Later that night I went to receptionist get a water bottle and a recharge voucher and no one was there but the manager. He was with some other guests and I waited for him for 15 minutes, He looked at me twice and ignored me, I went to him and excused him to buy the things that I went to buy but he got angry since he was drunk, and then I told him to calm down I do not want any trouble but he came and even touch me. I moved away and later I told him about double charge and I told him I don't want anything I will check out tomorrow, but this will be my last time to stay here and he started threatening me by taking picture but I went away from him and stayed in the room since it was late at night. I checked out next day morning and left hotel. Stayed in airport until departure. I stayed in different hotels in Sri Lanka but this is the worst of all.

Well, me and my friends got sent here on route to a volunteering project so to be fair, we didnt go here by choice, and by the looks of things whilst we were there, nobody else had hand chosen it either thank God!!

If you are looking to stay here I have only one bit of advise - Don't!

Right the place is not very clean and our rooms were just about managable with the bathrooms being not very nice, our air con not working, our windows not being able to be fully shut and then cold cold showers every morning (didnt mind this though that much due to the heat).

The location of it is down this little side road that just isn't safe to walk down on a night time. Within walking distance to Mount Lavinia Hotel which, when you see it will bring tears to your eyes! Its like going from the slums to a palace! There's not even a pool at this hotel.

On our 1st night (we arrived at the hotel late at night and went straight to bed) we eventually got to sleep after the innitial shock, however we were abruptly awoken by the most amighty roar and i COMPLETELY freaked out thinking it was an earth quake or whatever! I jump out of bed and look out of the window, only to see a train flying past our hotel window. This train went past every half an hour and I had the worst nights sleep of my entire life.

The hotel was host not only to mosquito's and trains it also had prostitutes wandering in and out, and then one night the owners had this mini party where they sat up all night making noise and had a massive argument right outside our room (we were 2 girls on our own and did not feel safe at all!).

Being volunteers we were expecting grotty but the hotel was NOT acceptable and I would HATE for someone to go here with the impression that it'll be a "cheap but fun" trip away. It won't. If you have the choice, which we didnt, dip into your pockets a little more and please stay away from this place!

My ten days of stay in Ranvelli Beach Hotel was great! Though it was such a short stay for lots of activities to do, my stay in Ranvelli Beach hotel was a big help. It became easier for me because of the help and warm accommodation of the Hotel friendly staff. They welcomed me like a family and that is just what a first timer like me needed in this magical and wonderful place .... I had an opportunity to meet the owner o Mr Buwaneka who was personally supervising all staff personally in all aspects in the hotel to make sure all visitors are happy and get the utmost typical Sri Lankan personal touch.
I highly recommend all visitors to sri lnaka to try out Ranveli Beach Hotel for quiet holiday in sri lanka.
Warm regards and all best wishes for staff in Ranveli Beach Resort.

This hotel is a little gem next to the beach. The price we paid for what we received was unbelievable. The rooms were clean and tidy and the staff helpful and friendly. We stayed here for three weeks and loved every minute of it. The hospitality of the owner Buwaneka is second to none. He's one of the most helpful and kindest people I've ever met. We've made a friend for life. The food is good and very cheap the pool is a good size and was always clean. The best hotel I've ever stayed in!!! Thank you Bu and all the staff. WE WILL BE BACK.

One of the best and homely hotel I have ever visited. This is my 7 or 8th stay in this hotel. The staff was extremely friendly and trustworthy as once I forgot my cash of SLR 35000/- at room but Hotel Mangers personally took care of it which I am very grateful.

This is not a 5-star hotel but the atmosphere is like home to me and the facilities are awesome. All respect for the Owner who does a great job by mingling with all the visitors.

Definitely during my next visit I will stay here again and recommend all the travelers to experience a true sample of excellent hospitality at this hotel.
