We would like to share our experience at the Mount Lavinia hotel. We spent an amazing journey. The hotel staff are very welcoming, friendly & nice people with always a smiling face, and very helpful. The food is delicious and in particularly at the Seafood market the Seafood cove, the staff is very professional and very attentive, the seafood is delicious at a very reasonable price. The restaurant is situated on the beach, very quite and relaxing place to enjoy and also to have a drink and watch the amazing sunset. All the staff will be missed, we really felt at home with our family.
We definately recommend the hotel if you wish to have a relaxing place. Moreover, any tour can be set up from the hotel to visit this amazing country.

We stayed for 1 night at the end of an escorted tour through Sri Lanka.
Starting with the positives, the hotel itself is beautiful and charming, with a sea view and fantastic Colombo skyline view at night. The food was very good and drink prices fair.

However, when it’s comes to our room (008) that’s where the good comments end.
We checked in around 5pm and wanted a quick shower before meeting the rest of our group for dinner. I quickly noticed whilst in the shower how mouldy the bathroom was, which obviously hadn’t been appropriately cleaned for some time. (See photos). The towels were damp, the bed linen we noticed when getting into bed at night were damp and my clothes which I left out on the chair to wear in the morning were also damp.
Perhaps because on the basement floor and this seriously needs some attention. Or just stop giving people this room, and likely other basement level rooms to paying guests!

We had a lovely terrace overlooking the garden and sea but no table or chairs!

It really ruined the stay and another member of our group has a similar experience.

If we were staying another night we would have insisted on another room. We did pass on this feedback to the manageress but declined the offer to have cleaners go in the room at 8pm. That could have solved the mould problem in the bathroom but not the overall damp issue.

Such a shame.

The location and property is beautiful but the hotel has seen better days. The rooms are drab, musty and not well kept. The room was so dark and dingy , I had to request for a table lamp. There are below average toiletries the bathroom . Not even toothpaste was provided with the toothbrush and I was glad I had carried my own.The service in the restaurant was poor and I had to remind them several times before I could get a glass of cold water. The buffet was boring and almost the same everyday.
Late in the evening when we wanted to sit and enjoy the sea breeze in the patio ( about 10.30 in the night) we were told it was closed and no service would be provided. When we said we would just sit and watch the sea , the staff did not help us with the chairs and we had to carry it ourselves.
The beach cafe of the hotel was in a pathetic state and the tea was served ( with some soggy biscuits) in chipped and old cups. The staff were very unhelpful about almost everything: getting a glass of water to providing an ironing board. It was a disappointing and unpleasant stay.

Gotta say, this place really disappoints. I got one of the new rooms facing the ocean so that's a plus but that's about it.

Carpets had these orange stains, I don't know what those are but they really don't look clean. There is dust behind the toilet and water damage in the ceiling of the toilet. The nearby train basically forces me to wake up early in the morning because the rooms aren't soundproof, the A/C is loud and the room in general doesn't look great.

There are far cheaper hotels providing a better service, unfortunately, I was not lucky enough to get into one of those for quarantine.

At the end of a wonderful tour of Sri Lanka the last stop was to be the best, we were returning with family to where we got married 19 years before for 3 night. I’ve never been more disappointed. The hotel room was filthy, we were moved, it was slightly better but had no bedside table, hangers, balcony furniture and several bulbs were out. These were replaced and we were shown 2 other rooms the following day but we couldn’t be bothered packing and unpacking again as the rooms were no different. In my opinion this hotel is now geared towards events and no consideration is given to the actual paying guests. I actually thought that they might have welcomed us back to the hotel in arrival. We decided to end in a High by organising Afternoon Tea for 3pm as we were due to get picked up at 4:15. Despite being booked they had no knowledge of our booking. No table set, no orders of food I.e. 2 Vegetarian and 3 without meat we were actually given 2 Vegan and 3 with chicken which they mistakenly said was mushrooms. It came at 3:35. I was so upset I went to reception and said I was refusing to pay as it was a disgrace. They eventually agreed.. I put all of my complaints on the customer survey and have given staff over 3 weeks to respond (which is what you’ll no doubt put below this review like you do with every bad review) so I’m extremely disappointed no one has bothered. I brought my family to the place I got married and I’m ashamed as it was the worst hotel of the whole trip. It should have brought back wonderful memories instead of souring them. You could learn a lot from 98 Acres in Eli who from our welcome to our departure were exceptional. There is NO excuse for rooms being dirty Soap and Water are not dear. Very sad and disappointed.

Stayed two nights. First impressions are of a beautiful grand old majestic hotel, with lots of history.. But rooms are very very tired, carpet dirty, bathroom tile grout was dirty, shower control difficult to stay in place. Not befitting this hotel and 4 stars. We booked the same table for two dinners and one breakfast. Arrived at breakfast to discover table not reserved and in Restaurant manager checked the booking list and saw we had booked,so rewrote the table request in ...but for some strange reason" our " table was again given to others. So out of three table bookings we got one. But the food was delicious and the older gentleman who holds the door open imto the air con section of the dinner buffet was lovely. ...and he knows how to smile. One waiter in particular doesnt know how to smile but he does know how to sloppily pour coffee into the saucer, and just walk off. Not good enough. Plates from room service left on the hall window sill for hours. Yes there are lovely views from the rooms and from the pool deck. After a month travelling in Sri Lanka we were very disappointed with this hotel, and a big lack of smiles from staff, and poor service.I was even given someone elses bill at check out. The room numbers and surnames were not even similar! This is in direct contrast to what we have experienced at other hotels of less star standing. Yes it is a very busy hotel but staff need serious training in hospitality. Giving this hotel two stars for location, foyer and food.

Usually crowded in the evenings, the Terrace overlooking the ocean and the city lights is a popular venue for dinner. On the evening that we visited the weather was pleasant and the place sparsely crowded. The international buffet had variety. The ever popular Srilankan hoppers were divine but the choice of accompaniments were limited. The desserts had a variety. A thoroughly enjoyable evening spending time with friends with drinks and dinner.

Stayed 3 nights to relax after a long flight from UK. Unfortunately arrived Friday to Monday. It is not recommended for weekend stay as the wedding and private functions seem to take precedence over hotel guests. There was an army function disrupting the pool area during the day and closing the pool bar for evening sunset drinks. Also half the terrace was closed for dinner and buffet disrupted. The room needed refurbishment. The curtains were hanging off rail/ wardrobe doors difficult to open. The bed was hard but bathroom was adequate.

In my view, Mount Lavinia Hotel is the best Hotel to stay if you are stopping in Colombo for work or before you start your Island tour in Sri Lanka. I have stayed this hotel more than 8 times in this hotel and this will be my first place near Colombo.

The hotel is situated in a peaceful place away from the busy Colombo city with an amazing view of Colombo and a sea view. Its private beach is a good place to chill out after your business meetings or after your travel around the area. The sea restaurant on the beach is such a peaceful place to have dinner in the night, listening to the sound of the waves.

The staff at the hotel are so friendly and they always made everyone welcome and do their best to make sure you have an enjoyable time during your stay at the hotel. Nothing is too much for them.

The dinner at the Terrace Restaurant near the swimming pool with beautiful sea view and gentle background music played by local bands is an heavenly experience for me. The food here is the best in the Island in my view with so many varieties. Being a vegetarian I have the opportunity to try out so many different tasty vegetable dishes.
Only downside is I put on weight a bit since I indulge myself too much !

The restaurant staff is so friendly and look after you to make sure you have the best dinning experience. My favourite waiter in the Terrace Restaurant is Chamara who goes out his way to ensure you have the best time of your life. I have never seen such a friendly and efficient waiter in my travel who works so hard with a welcoming smile to make sure everyone have a great time.

This was our last hotel during a 6 night tour in Sri Lanka on our honeymoon before heading to the Maldives for a week. Unfortunately, this was our least favourite hotel out of the 4 we had stayed in for a number of reasons. Upon arrival, the greeting (or lack of) was very different to what we had experienced in our other hotels. We didn't feel welcomed like we had done at the Cinnamon Habaraba Lodge, Cinnamon Citadel Kandy or Heritance Tea Factory but were summoned through security (which is fine) with some very unfriendly faces. Check in was fine and we were taken to our room, which felt old and in need of an update like the rest of the hotel. The view of the sea and beach was beautiful though but the presence of crows and lots of meant that we couldn't really enjoy the balcony!

The swimming pool was busy and quite noisy because of the crows but we managed to enjoy a couple of hours around the pool. We decided to opt for room service that night, which was quick and tasty and very reasonably priced. Breakfast the next morning was very nice, with a very good selection of food and lots of fresh bread and pastries.

I'm sorry to sound negative, but this hotel just felt very different to the other hotels during our wonderful trip in Sri Lanka. It was however conveniently located near to to the airport which suited us and if we had more time here, we would have loved to make the most of the beautiful golden beach.

I’m not sure but I wouldn’t bother. The breakfast is huge and so is the evening buffet option, you won’t have any space for lunch. The food is excellent by the way.
