Immaculate, large room with very comfortable bed. We slept with the windows open, listening to the waves, no more than perhaps 100 feet away. Very personable and helpful owners and employees. We ate several meals in the restaurant. They were unusually creative and delicious. One thing to keep in mind: this is in Louisbourg and there isn't much around there. It is located between the Louisbourg Fortress (very worthwhile to visit) and Glace Bay (Miner's museum) and Sydney, the larger town to the north. Good base for driving the Cabot Trail, to the Northwest.

We really loved staying here and extended our one night stay to two but still didn’t want to leave! Wonderful location, very caring owners and great food. Everywhere is beautifully furnished, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Highly recommend.

This was the best experience in louisbourg Nova Scotia. The town had no power due to hurricane Phillip. North Star had a generator and were not planning to open until 5:30 pm. When we 4 showed up at 5pm they open there door and let us in early. They treated us like family. They didn't have all the menu ready but what they had was fabulous. We would definitely go back.

This is a nice place, near the fortress of Lousibourg. The beach is directly in front of the hotel which was modernised this year by English tv designers. Our room was characterful and sweet, with lots of nice rustic touches that made it very special. On site restaurant was great and busy.

I really wanted to like this place, but it was so misrepresented that it is almost fraudulent. We booked with Julie for a long weekend, explaining we were interested in an ocean view room. She was nice enough, and sold us what she called a “partial ocean view” room. After two days of driving, the room turned out to be on the back of the restaurant restrooms, away from the rest of the hotel, and only had a gravel parking lot view from behind the main hotel, where we were led to believe we would be staying. The room was dumpy and tacky, and looked nothing like the photos on their website. This place did not exude the luxury that the website pretends, it was more like a converted RV park. In fact, it turns out it was, as the credit card charges posted under what is supposedly their old RV park business name. Being attached to the restaurant’s outdoor bathrooms, we also had to listen to people going to the bathroom, flushing the toilet, occasionally washing their hands, and making a racket with the manual paper towel dispenser through the paper thin walls. None of us got any sleep. We ended up checking out early the very next day, but were charged for two nights on our credit card per their policy. We are disputing the charges with our credit card company due to the fraudulent claims the hotel made to us. The image that the website portrays was nothing but a lie for us, but feels more like highway robbery. We’ll never be staying here again and I recommend you don’t either.…

The people are amazing there, excellent service. Prompt response via email to any question I had, including how to handle the possibility of an impending hurricane while we were trying to get to the hotel. Stayed in their newest cottage room, away from the main house. Beautiful 2 bedroom. As it was a new room, they asked our opinion on what was missing or needed correction. They took notes as we spoke. The mattress was too hard for me and would be the only thing I would change. Met Justin and Colin multiple times and they truly are lovely people to talk to. Seeing how they were fully engaged in every aspect from check-in to restaurant tasks and clean up was amazing. The restaurant food was amazing and had a great conversation with the head chef, whose wife was our server and worked to help me select a meal that would meet my health needs. The blueberry dessert made by one of the cooks was wonderful, so refreshing. I have very warm memories from staying there with my mother who enjoyed herself immensely.…

We only stayed here one night but wished we had booked for another. Everything was perfect. The room was very well appointed and was beautifully decorated in soft neutral tones with touches of Canadiana here and there. Loved the small bits of greenery - they added to the warmth of the decor. The bed was super comfortable and the room was very quiet. We had a top floor suite and the view was lovely. Sat on the patio in the am to enjoy a coffee and the ocean breeze. We didn't use the kitchen but its nice to have and had enough of a selection of dishes, cutlery etc. Totally adequate if you decided to dine in. We ate at the Brothy and loved our dinner. Service was five star and the entertainment was an unexpected and delightful addition to our evening! Had breakfast in the cafe the next morning after visiting the Fortress, which is an easy walk away. Thanks Colin and Justin and Mrs. MacDonald for a perfect stay. Hope to see you again soon. …

We stayed for two nights in an ocean front room with a stunning view. The room was clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated. The kitchen was well equipped but we opted to dine in the restaurant for our meals and the the food was exceptional as was the service. Colin and Justin were in the thick of things, serving meals, chatting with guests and just being great hosts. They work so hard and their passion and love for North Star is evident. A wonderful experience, don’t miss it!

Really enjoyed the experience of the property. Checking in was seamless and we got the room we reserved. Rooms are comfortable and decorated with flare. Everyone had a kind word and a smile. We enjoyed our walks on the private beach. Dinner was great in the Bothy and breakfast the next morning was perfect. The Bothy is one of the top places to eat in Cape Breton, and worth a drive to Louisbourg even if you aren’t staying on the property. We will be back and will stay longer.

Colin and Justin made our experience extra special. They greeted us at the door and visited our table numerous times. We also observed their keen attention to all tables and made sure they met and talked to every customer over the evening. The food and ambiance were exceptional at the Bothy and priced very reasonably for the 5 star quality of our dinner choices. We hope the next time we will be able to stay as guests of the North Star (the only thing our trip did not give us the time to do). Next time we will definitely plan more time for this wonderful place.
