My partner and I visited Playa Sonrisa in September, off season and quiet, exactly what we were looking for after a busy few months at work. We flew to Cancun and drove to Xkalak, breaking up the journey by staying in Tulum each way. The drive was easy enough and we had no problem finding our way.

Playa Sonrisa was everything we were looking for. We stayed in a comfortable bungalow which looked onto the coconut trees, beach and ocean. We spent much of the time swimming in the ocean and sitting under the trees (but not under a coconut!) with a book and a drink. It was relaxing and we felt recharged after a week there.

Murph and Cindy were great hosts, really friendly, welcoming and sensitive to the needs of their guests. They had done a great job of designing the restaurant and bar area, done in the local style but with a few nostalgic signs of their home country. We enjoyed hanging out there.

The food was really good, and during my early morning swims I always looked forward to the breakfast buffet, which included local fruit and freshly cooked/baked items. Dinner was provided on some days and not others, which Murph explained to us at the outset. The dinners we had there were delicious, without exception. The final meal was a real treat as we had lobster. On a couple of evenings we drove into Xkalak for dinner, and had very respectable pizzas at an oceanside joint.

For anyone looking for a high energy party atmosphere, Tulum might be a better option (although these days the clothing optional opportunities are limited). But if like us you wanted to unplug and relax in a stunning natural environment, Playa Sonrisa is perfect. Thanks to Cindy and Murph for being great hosts. We were sad to leave and hope one day to return.

After spending a little over a week at Playa Sonrisa I can safely say this place is a priceless gem.

You’ll be greeted by the new owners, Blaney and Steve, whose hospitality and kind personalities will have you feeling right at home.

After a short tour and information rundown (thankfully with drinks) you’ll be shown your room. Each space has its own unique features with direct access to the private beach, games area, and self-service bar.

Time seems to lose all meaning as the beauty of this paradise washes over you. The beach is raked clean daily and the ocean water is warm and inviting. You can camp out on the dock all day, just watching the waves break on the barrier reef, living it up in paradise.

Blaney and Steve serve three meals a day expect Sunday and are fabulous cooks! On Saturday nights locals are invited for dinner and you can meet and eat/drink with some of the fantastic people from town, both locals and ex-pats.

In the few short months Blaney and Steve have owned Playa, they have added many modern conveniences including faster internet and increased solar power. They provide drinkable water and the showers/taps run on rain water (chlorinated to prevent sickness). I’m sure as you’re reading this, they have done more to bring Playa into the 21st Century.

If you are looking for a vacation to get away from the world in a place that’s hard to get to, but even harder to leave, Playa Sonrisa is for you! We will be coming back, that's for sure!

Some details about the activities available:
We would recommend booking a snorkeling / diving expedition with Costa de Coco Dive. Knowledgeable and friendly guides who took us all around the reefs for a full day of wildlife observation.

We also recommend booking a massage at Playa Sonrisa. The professional masseuses set up right on the beach and the peaceful environment and expert hands melt away any lingering stresses.

This was our second stay for my husband and I. Our first was in 2021 with Murph and Cindy. We had a wonderful time! Blaney and Steven greeted us with a warm welcome, a snack and a cold drink in a souvenir tumbler (made by Blaney). Our hosts made sure we had what we needed to make our stay comfortable and they made us feel like family. The meals were delicious especially Blaney's pineapple entree! We enjoyed being able to have an all over tan, relaxing massages, having our bungalow just a few steps away from the beach, watching the sunset from the pier and most of all, being somewhere far away from daily life. Saturday evening we spent on the pier sipping wine with new friends enjoying the warm breeze. It doesn't any better than this!

Blaney and Steven have made many improvements since taking over last August and have more in mind to enhance their guests' stay. Steven just finished one of the garden bungalows before we left. Just the place if you want a bit more privacy. The view from the deck is perfect for watching the sunrise and to have a drink in the evening.

We also spent time exploring the area and found places to pull off to get to the beach. We snorkeled off one place where we saw an eagle ray only three feet away in the shallow water just grazing in the turtle grass! We took a ride with Blaney and Steven to Mahahual, shopped and had a delicious Italian dinner at La Trattoria.

Getting to Playa Sonrisa was no hassle. We spent the night in Cancun before driving south. Once you are past Tulum the busy traffic is lighter and you can enjoy the ride. We rented a small sedan from Avant, a local company we highly recommend, and had no problems on the uneven road from Xcalak to the resort. The Tulum International Airport will cut the 5 1/2 hour drive by two hours. The train should be finished by the end of the year to Chetumal making the trip from Cancun even easier.

Thank you Blaney and Steven for a wonderful vacation! We look forward to our next stay away from home!

My husband and I stayed at Playa Sonrisa over the holidays 2020. We were the first guests since Covid started. We were the only ones until two days before we left. Murph and Cindy are wonderful hosts! Breakfast is a buffet of fresh breads, fruits and coffee or tea. Cindy served delicious gourmet dishes for dinner, the last night was lobster!

We stayed in a beach bungalow with a nice view of the ocean. We slept very well! We enjoyed our naturalness very much.

We did have problems with car rentals. Our flight was delayed. So our reserved rental with Enterprise was given to someone else! We were offered a van for $200 a day! We weren’t the only one stranded. Our only option was the bus. We ended up taking a taxi from Limones for the last 70 miles, which worked out well. The bus (really a big van) would have dropped us off in town without transportation to the resort. On the way back we took the same taxi to Cancun and saved two hours by bus. Lesson learned-make sure of your rental plans are solid, especially during the holidays.

Thank you Murph and Cindy, for a wonderful vacation!

We spent a memorable week at Playa Sonrisa. The hosts Cindy and Murf are so cool, helpful and friendly that we felt immediately at home. The clean facilities allow for a comfortable stay, and Cindy’s food is just fantastic. We enjoyed every meal. The resort is 5km from the small fishing village of Xcalak, itself about 400km from Cancun. A very easy drive, about 5 hours long.
This place is so beautiful and calm, and the weather so perfect! We felt blessed to be there and explore the area’s virgin beaches and coves. The astronomer in me appreciated the super dark sky with an unobstructed view of the southern horizon. Hello Southern Cross and Magellanic Clouds!

We go back to this last piece of paradise as soon as we can!

Johanne and Pierre

Playa Sonrisa was the most beautiful and tranquil resort I have ever been to. Every minute, I felt like we were in the Garden of Eden. Waking up every morning to the sunrise over the water, swimming in the gulf, moonlit nights, a gentle breeze off of the gulf, made for an incredibly memorable experience. Our hosts, Steve and Blaney, could not have been more hospitable and helpful. The food was wonderful, as were the cocktails! Absolute perfection and so worth the drive.

We won a silent auction at a charity in Mahahual for a meal here. It is quite a drive from Mahahual to here but we are retired and living in Mahahual for 4 months of the year so it was just an evening out. Boy am I glad we made the “trek.” It was a wonderful place, we had a wonderful meal, the owners and the musician were all GREAT!!! I would highly recommend this place if you are adventurous and love the ocean. XTC, a great diving destination is just down the road, the snorkeling would be extrordinary, and if you want to “detach from the world” I can’t imagine another place any better.

We spent a blissful 4 days in Playa Sonrisa and were really sad we didn't have longer. This place is an unspoilt paradise, totally peaceful, breath-takingly beautiful and a haven of tranquility - the perfect getaway. Steve and Blaney are welcoming hosts providing comfortable accommodation and simple, good food. We loved every moment of our time here - particularly loved relaxing on the swinging day beds, swimming and snorkeling in the warm sea and the amazing sunrises every morning. We are already planning our next visit.

Some of the best January weather we have ever experienced in Xcalak. Rumor has it that January is the slow season, but having a choice between 10 below zero at home and 80+ degrees on the beach...I will take it! Blaney and Steve knocked it out of the park in providing hospitality. The new snorkel and dive options, direct from the dock are awesome! We've been regular guests here for over a decade...the new owners are carrying on the PSR experience, and adding to it!

Travel options, i.e. a new international airport in Tulum, plus the Maya Train, make this destination more accessible than ever...we look forward to future visits!

If you're looking to truly get away from it all Playa Sonrisa is the place. Blaney and Steve are GREAT hosts, they are there if you need them, invisible if you don't. The rooms are comfortable, the beach is secluded (and beautiful) and the atmosphere is pure bliss. If you've thought about taking your first clothing optional trip this is the perfect place to do it (and you should). It is away from it all but so worth it for the seclusion.

Not rocky or coral. What you see is turtle grass. It just goes 10-15 ft out then the water is clear all the way to the reef. Great snorkeling.

I'm sure Murph and Cindy will let you keep your insulin in one of the fridges in the big gathering palapa. We used a little ice chest in our room to keep snacks so you could do that too. Just stop someplace in Cancun and get one
