Travellers' Choice
The 16th century Swan has been welcoming guests through its doors for over 400 years, and was once a convenient resting place for those travelling the 200 miles from London to Chester. Today, our comfortable rooms and welcoming bar and dining areas mean that The Swan continues to be a haven for visitors from far and wide. A regular winner of the Best Kept Village award, Tarporley appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. Back then, Tarporley was home to just eight households, but today is one of the largest villages in the heart of the Cheshire countryside, with antique, curio, craft and fashion shops lining its streets. Some of The Swan’s most historic features are located in its Hunt Room, home to the Tarporley Hunt Club. Founded in 1762, it is the oldest in England. The club historically met twice annually at The Swan, with each meeting lasting seven days and the hunting taking place largely within the nearby Delamere Forest. In the founding set of rules, members were required to drink “three collar bumpers” after both dinner and supper, and, in the event of marriage, to present each club member with a pair of buckskin breeches. The Tarporley Hunt Club still meet once a year today, a quarter of a millennium after Obidiah Lane went hare coarsing with his chums and decided, after much merriment at the Swan, this should happen every year; “We shall meet for the purposes of general conviviality” he declared!

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a charming coaching inn on the High St. it’s a very relaxing place to dine as the young staff are very laid back and friendly. Everything moves at a leisurely pace which is very refreshing for us London folk. We both opted for the smoked haddock pancakes and they were very tasty indeed. We both chose Snugbury’s ice cream for dessert and this was just as good as I remembered from my childhood - all in all, a jolly good meal. Highly recommended

We called in for two small cola drinks. Sat outside. Nice hotel The drinks were served in a small tumbler half filled with ice. Literally 3 sips. £2.70 each. Wont be going there again. I thought a small cola was half pint. Not on this occasion though.

Hi Steve, we're pleased to hear you thought the venue was nice but disappointed that you thought our drinks were too expensive. Did you raise your concerns with anybody whilst visiting us? We always look to resolve any issues our customers may encounter on the day.

Stayed for 1 night, really good. Well located on the High Street. Staff very pleasant and helpful. Room was very clean and had everything we needed, loved the little touches in the room bottle of water and fresh milk. Good choice at breakfast. Would recommend to family and friends, would book again if in area.

Was late arriving but Laura took our order on the phone and made sure we had food ready on our arrival. Lovely welcome in a lovely place. All staff very courteous and efficient and the food and drinks were excellent. All in all, people like Laura and places like this make dining out feel special. Thank you, Laura - keep up the high standards. Gavin

Maybe the chef had an off night, but honestly, although this wasn't expensive it was outstandingly bad. For a start, there was way, way too much food. What is the point of huge piles of food? Who eats that much? I hate waste. Anyway, I had gammon steak, peas and jumbo chips. Now, where I come from, a gammon steak is a thin round piece of gammon around 15cm diameter, with pineapple. Whatever this was, it was more like a thick pork steak, but there was so much salt I was guzzling water for the rest of the evening. And it had weird bits of apple and something else on it. This is pub food, not Masterchef. The peas were undercooked. I should have sent them back, but I couldn't be bothered. I didn't like the vibe of the pub either, seemed like it was full of snobbish foxhunting

We stayed at the Swan 1 night, it was very nice. The staff were friendly and efficient. The food was very good and the room was warm and comfortable. I would recommend this hotel to anybody without reservation. We will stay there again the next time we are in the area.

We had lunch on a Wednesday. The building is excellent, well decorated and with pleasant and helpful staff. But the food was disappointing and over-priced. The fish and chips had soggy batter, and the beef baguette was very ordinary, and not worth its cost. A pity, because everything else was so good.

Lovely hotel Been here many times. Lovely kind staff. Beautiful rooms Great breakfast Great place to stay However - at the time I stayed I felt that the staff needed specific hospitality training It seemed rather as if perhaps the pub/hotel has had some difficult customers and that much of what they were doing was aimed at preventing difficulty which didn’t necessarily work well for non difficult customers. Not quite aa welcoming as usual but hopeful it will be resolved

We attended our friends wedding here last weekend. The food at the wedding breakfast was exceptional. We booked to stay and room 22 in the conversion was just right. Very comfortable bed and comfortable room. We would fully recommend a stay here. Check in was easy and as we had prepaid very quick. Breakfast was lovely, fresh and hot. The eggs Benedict and the Cheshire breakfast were delicious. Overall a lovely hotel.
