Alston Youth Hostel is situated on the edge of Alston town high up in the North Pennines (The Roof of England!) In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The Pennine Way, Pennine Journey, Isaac's Tea Trail and South Tyne Trail runs right by the side of the hostel and is the first accommodation you reach in Alston after the long walk from Dufton over Cross Fell (the highest point of The Pennine Way). Detailed Reviews
We stayed for one night as a family whilst cycling the C2C. We had a spacious room, with views to 3 sides which slept 6. We received a really warm, friendly welcome. The owner helped us store our bikes and then kindly checked on the closing time of the fish and chip shop. The hostel felt very safe in terms of managing the Covid risk - each room was allocated a shower and a table in the dining room. Other communal and self catering areas were closed. The hostel is impeccably clean. The owner left out glasses, plates, etc so that we were able to eat our evening meal in the dining room. Breakfast was wonderful. When we discovered one of the bikes had a puncture the next day the owner offered to give a lift to the cycle shop if we needed one. We have stayed in around a dozen YHAs in the last 5 years and this one is the best so far! I do hope we'll be able to visit again as I would like a chance to explore the area.

Thank you so much for your very very kind review! We are thrilled to know that you enjoyed your stay and the breakfast and most importantly that you felt Covid safe! Knowing that is a great help as you can plan in advance but you never know until guests arrive! I'm glad you were able to carry on your cycle ride OK. I hope the next leg of your journey was enjoyable too. We would love to see you again if you come to explore the North Pennines again!!

This hostel should be a model for the other youth hostels. The beds were comfortable, the shower had a proper door and adjustable height shower head, which are sadly rare in youth hostels. Everything worked and the whole place was spotless. Quality fittings, quality sanitary ware, well equipped kitchen. The welcome was friendly and although there's a spar shop very close by, we were pleased we'd opted for the cooked breakfast as it was delicious.

This is somewhere special - Linda is the epitome of efficiency, friendliness and helpfulness. Nothing is too much trouble and everything is clean and tidy and well run. And you can tell by the quality of the showers and the general upkeep that Neil is a top plumber! An example of how good this is - Linda insisted on putting our sopping clothes through the tumble dryer and we found them neatly folded in the drying room. This is really quite exceptional

Thank you so much for your lovely review! We are over whelmed by your kind comments. Making sure your clothes are dry is the least we can do! Living on the Pennine Way with unpredictable weather we know it's one of life's essentials!! And Neil say's thank you for calling him a Top plumber! We do hope you will come to visit us again but hopefully you won't need our drying room!

Clean, warm and bright, important in Autumn. The warden was friendly and helpful.
The clothes washing and drying facilities were greatly appreciated.
The location near the town and small supermarket as well as the Pennine Way makes this an ideal stop over.

Stayed here, with friends, for two nights (Friday and Saturday) on the second weekend of March. We used the hostel as a base for walking. There is a garage and shop just a minutes walk away, and some nice pubs within easy walking distance.
The new owners had only been there for a week, but they were very welcoming, friendly and helpful.
The hostel was spotlessly clean, warm and had all the facilities we needed. The toilets and showers were also spotless and plenty of hot water in the showers.
Great breakfast and comfortable beds too. Would gladly stay there again.

We put a lot of importance in the cleanliness and warmth of the hostel to make you feel as “at home” as possible, so great that you felt that. I visited this youth hostel with a group of friends keen to explore the local area. We could not have been made more welcome. The hostel is very well equipped and in excellent condition. The breakfast was first rate, and Linda is a great source of knowledge on the local area. Highly recommended whether you are cycling, walking or just exploring the northern Pennines by motor vehicle.

Thank you so much Geof for your very kind review of our hostel! It was great to meet you all and we are thrilled that you all enjoyed your stay with us! I do love to be able to advise on what to see and where to visit in this lesser known part of Cumbria! Just a shame the weather wasn't great! We hope you'll have another reunion here again in the future!

A superb setting on the edge of the Pennine Way. Comfortable bedrooms and a large welcoming communal area. Neil and Linda are discretely welcoming hosts, never too intrusive. They keep the hostel in excellent constantly renewing/redcorating for a rewarding visit. I look forward to returning next year. Thank you for a great stay, Debi

A great hostel in a great location! Ideal for exploring the waterfalls of Teesdale around High Force and Summerhill Force (about 20–30 minutes drive) and the hills around Alston, as well as being a handy stop on the Pennine Way 🚶 and C2C 🚴. We had the hostel on exclusive hire, with a group of 20 people, and the new owner Mat and his family looked after us very well. The beds were some of the most comfortable I've found in a hostel and the showers were better than most. We had plenty of space, although I can imagine it might feel a little bit busy if all 30 beds were in use. Can also recommend the nearby Alston House for evening meals if you don't fancy cooking, they were happy to cater for a large group.

Very satisfied with our stay. Friendly staff and facilities generally as expected. In a handy location with the attractive town just a walk away. Didn't give a top rating as no reading lights which YHA info suggests private rooms usually have and only found one light switch away by room door. The breakfast was served too early for comfort, the last time being two hours before last checkout time or else we would have eaten there. Still recommend it and the sociable hostelling experience.
