Alston Youth Hostel is situated on the edge of Alston town high up in the North Pennines (The Roof of England!) In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The Pennine Way, Pennine Journey, Isaac's Tea Trail and South Tyne Trail runs right by the side of the hostel and is the first accommodation you reach in Alston after the long walk from Dufton over Cross Fell (the highest point of The Pennine Way). Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A lovely welcome, and I must mention the great drying room which was so useful after a very wet day cycling the C2C from Sunderland. Our second visit to this great youth hostel and certainly won’t be our last.

I visited this youth hostel with a group of friends keen to explore the local area. We could not have been made more welcome. The hostel is very well equipped and in excellent condition. The breakfast was first rate, and Linda is a great source of knowledge on the local area. Highly recommended whether you are cycling, walking or just exploring the northern Pennines by motor vehicle.

Thank you so much Geof for your very kind review of our hostel! It was great to meet you all and we are thrilled that you all enjoyed your stay with us! I do love to be able to advise on what to see and where to visit in this lesser known part of Cumbria! Just a shame the weather wasn't great! We hope you'll have another reunion here again in the future!

Thank you for your kind review of our hostel and we're happy to know that you enjoyed breakfast! The hostel is closed between 10am and usually 4:30pm. There are just 2 of us and we have to clean and get the hostel ready for the next guests, then have a few hours off ourselves or may have to go out shopping. Unfortunately we are unable to leave it open, as some hostel may do in more remote locations, as the reception isn't manned all the time. However, if we are at home and it's raining and guests arrive a bit early we do let them in!

My wife and four year old son had a wonderful two day stay at the hostel. We enjoyed a spacious private room, which we found to be extremely clean and comfortable on arrival. The lounge was clean and tidy with loads of great walks and information about local amenities (and a toy box perfect for toddlers to explore). Kitchen was well equipped and we recommend the full breakfast which was superb with cereal to start, toast and a full English. We’ve stayed in lots of YHAs over the years and this hostel is up there with the best. Would definitely recommend.

I stayed at Alston for a night on the way back from Scotland. Situated perfectly for the Pennine way. Run in an environmentally conscious way by helpful hosts. Car parking on site and cycle sheds. Nice, peaceful stay

My kids have loved their visits to the youth hostel with cubs. They've always had a great time. Facilities are ideal & cater for everything. Great location close to town, and plenty of walks as well has the railway station & disused railway line.

Another great visit even though it was relatively quiet. Probably the cleanest YHA we visit in the way it is cared for. Sadly no more red squirrels outside at brekky as the greys have moved in. Room was fine and heating perfectly adequate. A great location - we were well looked after..

Clean, warm and bright, important in Autumn. The warden was friendly and helpful. The clothes washing and drying facilities were greatly appreciated. The location near the town and small supermarket as well as the Pennine Way makes this an ideal stop over.

Stayed here after day 1 of the C2C, really good accommodation, spotlessly clean, massive kitchen and lounge area, great shower, good bike storage. Didn't have breakfast so can't commnent on that but overall it was excellent and ideal for cycling the C2C.

Just had a terrific weekend of cycling with great accommodation at the hostel. Clean & tidy rooms, great showers, clean loos, excellent lounge area and quality piping hot breakfast. Very safe bike storage, great drying room and hosts who could not have been more helpful & friendly. Recommended by a friend who said this was her favourite YH, mine too now! Loved it.
