Detailed Reviews
This is the second time we have stayed at Alston House. We stayed two nights over the weekend. It's a wonderful place with really friendly owners and staff. We stayed in room 3. It was a lovely big room with a huge bed. The bathroom was superb with a tub bath and a big separate shower. We were provided with toiletries and bath robes plus soft fluffy towels. The bed was super comfortable, when I go away I sometimes find it hard to sleep in a strange bed but I had two perfect nights sleep. The breakfast, which was included in the price was lovely. All freshly made and served to your table. The choice at breakfast was amazing. We are both nights in the restaurant, the food is first class, good choice, well cooked and served. We had two courses, a main and a dessert. The apple crumble and profiteroles were the best we have ever tasted. To say one of us had steak and the other had pork medallions the price at £72 including drinks was reasonable. Next time we are in Alston it will definitely be our first choice place.

What a refreshing stay. From booking to arrival greeting to, service every aspect was dealt with professionalism and care. Check in was efficient , hygiene standards excellent. Our welcome was warm and we were made to feel welcome from the start
Our room was perfect. Stunning bathroom with roll top bath was immaculate. Our bed was huge and very comfortable, with excellent quality bedding The fresh coffee and cafeteria was a lovely touch as was the bath soak provided alongside the usual shampoo etc. The heating was also excellent and we were able to adjust it to suit our needs with plenty of hot water.
We had beautiful views out over the fells
Downstairs was a lovely log fire and stunning Dining area, which was both modern and very cosy. Our food was excellent and extremely tasty. Good wine selection too. Every area was well presented.
The town is very pretty and surrounding fells and walks stunning.
The difference with this hotel was the extra mile every one of the staff as well as the owners went to to make us feel welcome. Little extras like the offer of fresh milk for our tea and coffee in the room or the offer of providing ice or glasses shows they understand what customers may want.
It is such a pleasure to visit a hotel where the heart hasn't been ripped from the building and where the owners are trying and succeeding to make your stay warm without being too formal or business led. Do not hesitate to book if you want a stay in a stunning location with excellent comfort and want to support a business who want to make your stay so enjoyable.
Would not hesitate to return

Stayed here for two nights 18th and 19th September 2024. Carole, and the staff are very friendly. Our room was very comfortable, with quality shower gel/shampoo/conditioner, which was a nice touch. Also in the room was a hair dryer. Lot's of tea bags, milk, coffee, selection of sweets, and even kitkats..... We stayed for dinner on both nights, and was not disappointed. The chef produced some tasty meals..... and not forgetting the breakfast which was well stocked, and the Cumbrian Cooked Breakfast is to die for! We were lucky enough to have hot weather (21 deg!!) and so were able to experience the garden, which is private, and a lovely spot to relax in. All-in-all this hotel was worth every penny..... we would definitely recommend it if you are looking to stay in Alston.

We arrived here a bit later than planned due to weather only to find they wouldn't give us dinner. They did provide some sandwiches which were very welcome. The room was large and quirky with a comfortable bed, cafetiere and coffee and a nice clean bathroom. The toilet had a macerator which was very noisy and meant using the toilet at night was difficult. The hall and stairs carpet needed a good clean but the rest of the interesting old building was well presented. Parking was opposite the hotel and a very well stocked Spar was located opposite. Breakfast was disappointing. There was limited fruit and one large open pot of flavoured yoghurt (no choice and no individual pots). Cooked breakfast was standard fayre - bacon, sausage, egg, tomato. There were no pastries and no continental option. A reasonable pub menu was available for dinner which was served in large portions but only until 8.30pm. In summary this is a lovely old building and the landlady was very pleasant (the landlord was uncommunicative). More fresh fruit options and continental breakfast would be welcome.

We stayed for 1 night as a stop over point on the way to Glasgow and had a lovely relaxing stay. We took our puppy along with us and were made to feel very welcome. The rooms were nice but a particular highlight was the nice bathroom and roll top bath.
We had our evening meal and breakfast here and I can honestly say it was one of the best burgers I’ve had. The produce was fresh and very tasty.
Would deffo stay here again! I would recommend booking direct though as it was cheaper than booking.com and breakfast was also included in the price when booking direct.
Thanks for a lovely stay!

We were doing the C2C cycle route (most of us novices). Arrived in semi darkness to the hotel and were immediately made welcome (despite being in an exhausted state). After a freshen up in the spacious and well decorated room (with ensuite) we had a lovely sunday roast with a quite a few local pale ales. Service was faultless. The hotel itself has been decorated with care and style - the historic building retains several original features including its wooden sash windows - hurrah. Hope to go back with family some time. Alston a fascinating small town in the centre of moors...

Booked for Sunday lunch asked if we could change the dauphinois potatoes for mash. Informed yes as we had expected. Mash came on a side dish as did cauliflower cheese and veg. Over all the meal was uninspiring declined any other additional courses.
The bill came and we were charged £3.50 each, in total for mash!!! We challenged this and was told that mash is a side order. I stated that I had requested the a change and was told it was okay. I was then offered £1 off the bill. It was only when I stated firmly that we were being billed £7 for mash potatoes were we finally given that cost off the bill. I was then informed that for next time it was a set meal. There will not be a next time.

Having not been out due to lockdown, I thought I'd finally treat myself to a treat whilst supporting one of my local businesses. The cleanliness and hygiene is incredibly high, as soon as you walk in there is hand sanitsor and track and trace forms with distinguishing clean and used pencils. The tables were well spread out and you never felt like people were too close for social distancing. Staff were incredibly courteous and friendly and made sure that any requests were met swiftly. The sunday lunch was perfect, good portion size for the price and presentation was good. Nice outdoors area as well and dog friendly which is a big bonus. Was a lovely evening out with good food, brilliant staff and a welcoming and safe environment!

Arrived here after a very long tiring day walking the Pennine Way with a group of four. I struck lucky and was given a large family room at the front of the house with a good sized bathroom and quality toiletries. We ate in the dining room that night which had a buzzing atmosphere, was extremely busy but we were still well looked after by the proprietor. The food was outstanding, particularly the butternut squash and coconut soup with large chunks of bread, to die for!

I have stayed in Alston House a few times now and every time it has been amazing! The rooms are gorgeous and impeccably clean. The room is fully kitted out for a relaxing stay, the bed is super comfortable and big with the softest sheets and pillows, a TV on the wall and even a cafetiere with lovely coffee which I appreciated. The en suite was very modern and luxurious.
The food here is so delicious (the best lasagne I have tasted), we made sure to make it down for breakfast every morning, and at dinner we enjoyed the large fire place and sometimes live folk music - always a great atmosphere with the tastiest food and drinks, Also throughout the seasons there is often fabulous decor for Christmas, Halloween etc which I look forward to every time.
Whilst staying at Alston House we have ventured out to the nearby bars and shops. We also enjoy scenic walks looking over the Moor and we were able to drive to different Lake District spots.
I would recommend staying here to everyone! Such a gem in the Lake District area and perfect for a restful or adventure filled stay. And big thanks to Mike, Carole, Simone and all the staff who make every stay so special.
