Travellers' Choice
Nestled at the foot of Shepherd's Crag in the beautiful valley of Borrowdale, this 4-star hotel has a totally unique atmosphere enveloping the visitors from the moment they arrive. Built in 1866, the Borrowdale Hotel has an interesting history with the original 41 room bells, which, although no longer working, are still proudly displayed outside the reception area. The AA Rosette restaurant is very elegant and comfortable, which also boasts a superb walk-in wine cellar stocked with some very interesting bottles. During the day the lounge bar and conservatory are open for light lunches and afternoon teas and in the evening a splendid 5 course silver service dinner can be enjoyed in the AA Rosette restaurant with coffee and mints served in the lounges. The 40 cosy bedrooms come equipped with TV, telephone and hospitality tray. For those looking for dog friendly hotels, all of our bedrooms are dog friendly and are available for well-behaved dogs.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

As always a wonderful 4 nights at the Borrowdale Hotel. We chose DBB rate. The food is great and the service is so friendly. Rita and Ryan in the bar and restaurant were absolute stars throughout - thank you . The rooms are comfortable and serviced everyday. Once we arrived and parked up we either walked from the hotel or used the bus routes to and from walks. In summary, we will definitely be back and thanks for the wonderful stay and hospitality.

What’s Happened? 🤔1 st Night at Dinner .Bread was hard and not warm , My Cod main course was very poor it left such a bad aftertaste , my friends Fillet steak small and tough. We didn’t complain as we didn’t want to cause a fuss . 2 nd night My wagyu burger rock hard , rock hard Bun shocking which I sent back , my friends flat iron steak was Rock hard , he sent it back . Very Dissatisfied with this. Trip . £600 in total for 2 of us . Sorry Borrowdale we will never come back . Paul Roberts .

Just returned home after 2 nights here. Stay was pleasant enough but when we went to reception this morning at 09.10 to pay our bill we were confronted with a young member of staff who was clearly stressed. She said it was “bad timing” as she was supposed to be helping with breakfast service! Excuse us but it’s not our fault the hotel had insufficient staff on duty!!!!! She didn’t even ask if we’d had a nice stay. Somebody clearly needs to attend a guest interaction course. Not a nice end to what was otherwise a pleasant stay.

We had a lovely relaxing 4 nights at the Borrowdale hotel. This was our third stay here. Our room was comfortable with a bath and overhead shower. This is an old building and the only negative is there are 2 floors of rooms but no lift. We had a dinner, bed and breakfast deal with £40pppn allowance for dinner. Our breakfast's and Dinner's were delicious. We also had lunch here on 2 days. Nora the head waiter was lovely, friendly and gave us excellent service. Rita one of the waitresses was lovely too. The lounges and bar were relaxing.

Beautiful building and surroundings but sadly disappointing food. The Mother’s Day menu greatly lacked imagination for vegetarian customers. The ‘lentil nut roast’ on offer was actually mushroom risotto molded into a dome shape with seeds sprinkled on. The Melon boats ordered consisted of no melon at all and were actually grapefruit, apple and raspberries. We asked the waiting staff if we could have some melon and after checking with the kitchen staff, they apologised stating they didn’t actually have any melon available. We think it would have been better to inform us if certain items on the menu were no longer available before serving something completely different and hoping we wouldn’t notice. The food was delicious although portions small and overpriced. We were over charged for 3 cups of tea which had to be taken off the bill. The staff were very pleasant, polite and attentive. The conservatory in which we were seated was lovely, dog friendly and not too busy, with plenty of empty tables. Unfortunately I would not go back. The Lakes has so many wonderful places to eat and The Barrowdale Hotel is sadly not up to the standards you’d expect.

We popped in for a bar meal although the small number of cars outside wasn’t a good sign. We were directed to the bar which had 4 couples at tables drinking but not eating. No sign of any staff or any menus. We waited and waited but no one came. After 5min nobody had appeared. We were told that the barman/waiter was in the kitchen. No bell or means of looking at a menu. We waited more time and then decided to go somewhere where we would get some proper service

On first impression this hotel is lovely. A nice warm welcome at reception, gorgeous/modern downstairs, fire burning, super clean... we were impressed on arrival! Our room was up 2 flights of stairs, and after the first flight, the modern decor very quickly changed. You can see that downstairs has been refubished but upstairs very outdated. The carpet is very old fashioned and floral, dated furniture in the hallways. We stayed in a twin room, which again, was dated. Bathroom suite looked like it had been there for years. When we entered our room we were a little disappointed considering we had paid over £180 for one night. But we accepted it and enjoyed our evening anyway. When we got into bed, we both commented on how hard the mattresses were. From that point, it was possibly the most uncomfortable nights sleep I've ever had. We tossed and turned most of the night and both woke in the morning with terrible back ache and had very little sleep. On a positive, the breakfast was lovely, great quality and efficient staff too. Although there were positives, unfortunately for the price, we wouldn't return, nor would we recommend it to others.

Another amazing stay at The Borrowdale. The hotel really is looking lovely following the refurbishment. Dinner in the restaurant was delicious, looked after by lovely Cath who always welcomes us with a smile, followed by drinks by the fireside..perfect..and the sun shone in February 😊

We have celebrated New Year at this hotel on several occasions now. We have returned because the hotel is well located for plenty of walks and Keswick, which is walkable or a short bus ride from the bus stop opposite the hotel. The hotel has also had that family feel and that nothing is too much trouble. The hotel lounges and restaurant were refurbished early last year, the lounges look very cosy and inviting, however, the dining, although improved and updated, lacks atmosphere and looks almost corporate, it’s lost its individuality. Our package as a whole was ok, but felt that standards were not as good as previous years. On New Years Eve, the restaurant lacked the buzz of previous New Years and we felt rather rushed. I chose the duck as a main course and having seen it served on other tables, I was looking forward to it, however, when mine arrived, it was almost raw. I couldn’t eat it, my partner kindly swapped his pork, which was very nice, for my duck, but he didn’t enjoy it. The piper made a fleeting visit through the dining room, maybe he was running late on his hotel visits before midnight. The evening disco was not good. He seemed to choose music that he liked, rather than read his audience to keep people on the dance floor. At brunch on New Years Day, we ordered toast and cooked breakfast. The toast arrived promptly, but I noticed other people receiving their cooked breakfasts before us. After 40 minutes, we asked about it, they said it was just coming. After waiting 50 minutes and eaten our 2nd round of toast we gave up and left as our order had clearly been forgotten. On a positive, both the wine and gin tasting were excellent. Finally, not sure if this is a Cumbrian thing, but there is nothing worse than cold crumpets straight out of the packets. They would be much nicer toasted and kept warm. I know this has been posted on previous reviews. It was nice to see so many members of staff that have been here for many years and they made us feel very welcome as returning guests, however, for us, I think we will try somewhere else next year.
