An idyllic country inn perched on the fellside overlooking the Winster Valley. The pub offers a delicious menu served daily, a great range of cask and bottled beers, superb wine list all in the most beautiful setting. Roaring log fires, low beamed ceilings and quirky seating areas welcome you in the colder months. The large outdoor seated terrace enables you to soak up the amazing views whilst enjoying a relaxing drink, fab food, or both! If you can stick around, we have two lovely cottages and five double suites to base yourself whilst enjoying the delights of the inn and it's surrounding vistas. Dogs are welcome in the bar area, and we also have some dog friendly accommodation too.

We booked a return weekend break to see the autumn colours planning to walk in the area but the tail end of a hurricane thwarted our plans. It didn't spoil our time in this cosy pub with roaring fires, excellent beers and excellent food. The staff made us very welcome and accommodated our request to keep our table in the bar for drinks before and after food.
Breakfast menu provided the night before and served in the bar area where the fire was already blazing.
The room was cool, no central heating or bathroom towel rail on but it didn't bother us as we were either out and about or in the bar! I probably wouldn't have booked this room if the information had made clear it is a loft bedroom with the bathroom down moderately steep stairs so definitely not suitable for people who aren't very mobile and just an inconvenience for us. We stayed previously in the Strawberry Bank Suite and would choose that next time.
Throughly enjoyed our stay and feeling pleased we managed to fit it in before lockdown again.
View over Winster valley from the pub.

We stayed at The Masons Arms last weekend for three nights in Winster Cottage and we cannot stop telling people how perfect our stay was. The cottage was absolutely immaculate and had everything we could need and more. We ordered a breakfast box for my birthday morning which was so reasonably priced and made the day extra special, especially the little bottle of Prosecco! The views from the little patio outside were out of this world, especially on a sunny day. We will definitely be returning. The staff couldn’t do enough for us, we could even order our meals from the pub and have them delivered to the cottage. A stand out stay!

We were glad to be able to get away for a few days after a long lock down due to Covid-19.

We booked the largest accommodation - Winster Cottage - to allow our daugter to join us along with her dog.

Accommodation was fine for this number, but I'd not want more (and it advertises up to 6). Table in kitchen is for 4, as is seating in lounge ... so don't turn up with 6 adults.

They've had a refurb since last time we stayed, but not sure the ubiquitous black swan lamps will be to many people's taste. A triumph of design over common sense.

Lots of easy walking right from the door which is just what we needed after over a year away from the hills.

Menu in the pub may have been more limited than normal because of Covid. It's good pub food, but not anywhere close to the standards they used to have here.

Robinson's of Stockport are now the owners, so there are fewer local ale's available. They're obviously investing in the Mason's Arms, I just hope they don't get rid of what makes it the Mason's in the first place. Time will tell

Wilth beautiful views down the valley and an enticing terrace we had high hopes for the Masons Arms when we arrived on a lovely balmy evening in June.
Friendly, attentive staff made us feel welcome and the room was clean and comfortable.
Unfortunately the food was pretty awful. My burger was bland and dry and my chunky chips had been recooked so many times they were almost black and just tasted burnt. My wife’s confit of duck was also massively overcooked, over salty, hard and chewy. Breakfast, again served by friendly staff, had been cooked to beyond extinction. Rubbery scrambled egg and leathery bacon could have been so much better with a lighter touch.
One other thing. We were somewhat surprised in the morning by a window cleaner propping his ladder up against our window and chirpily going about his business oblivious to the fact that we were getting changed. Would it have been so hard to wait until we had checked out?

We absolutely loved our stay at the Masons Arms. The rooms are beautifully renovated with really comfy beds, individual details and lovely cosy seating areas to enjoy a cuppa. And great showers!
Breakfasts are fantastic, as is eating dinner in the pub. The food is here is really delicious and served with love and care. Which brings me to the people who work at the Masons Arms - every person was super friendly, helpful and happy. The service was always excellent, personable and friendly and really lifted our whole experience to being absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much, we really can’t wait to come back.

Well what can I say, this is a little gem of a place to visit in Cartmel. From the moment we arrived we felt at home, staff are amazingly accommodating and friendly, the rooms are gorgeous we were in a quirky room with a great view and a big comfy double bed on a mezzanine, fresh clean white bedding which smells so fresh and clean, absolutely amazing. The bathroom and shower is fabulous the water pressure was great.
We had a lovely meal here in front of the log fire, home made parsnip soup with a big cob of fresh bread followed by home made chunky steak pie with chips and mushy peas delicious
We had the best nights sleep the beds are so comfy 🥰
The snow came down heavy in the evening so we enjoyed a little get together in the snow with all the staff and other residents it was so much fun ❤️
The choice of drinks is vast and the menu is great.
It's dog friendly which is great . The views are fantastic whatever the weather. All in all its a cozy little pub with a great atmosphere and we will be back for sure.❤️

We had a fantastic evening meal here.
The whole set up, from the online booking process, to arriving and being shown to our table, was very well executed.
Although they are running a ‘limited’ menu, we were still spoilt for choice.
The selection was excellent and varied enough to appeal to most palates.
We went for the Halloumi fingers to start. They came with herby toasted bread and hummus. Very tasty indeed.
We then had the cod, pie of the day and the cheese and onion pie.
All were absolutely delicious. Just the right amount too.
Some of us! Managed a pudding (waffle with fruit and ice cream).
All in all a lovely meal.
Would certainly be worthy of any special-occasion meal out.
The price, particularly considering the quality of the food, was very good too.
Will most definitely return when we are next up over here.

We are a family of 4 touring the lakes and booked this as part of our route plan, I wish now we had spent our 4 days here As we all loved the place. The cottage we had was excellent, everything you needed, from a self catering point of view it was all there, the beds were so comfortable, the inside living areas were exceptional.. and then the view from the double doors that lead out to the outside sitting area was the biggest surprise .. wow.. We ate in the pub downstairs, it’s a typical Lake District pub, quaint, olde worlde and full of charisma, there is also an outdoor eating area to take in the views.. the dinner we had was excellent, cooked to perfection. We had breakfast in the morning in the bar, again like dinner it was cooked perfectly, set us up for the full day... this is a gem of a place, so quiet and tranquil yet only a 10 min drive to lake windmere .. we will certainly be back.. enjoy..

Overall, this was a great stay in a place that is trying hard to get it right. Food was very good, hot and plentiful, although the menu could have been larger. Beer was in good condition and we had no complaints with either the welcome or service. We stayed in Strawberry Bank suite and it was comfortable, although we suffered from being directly above the pub door, which banged loudly and the room was on the warm side, due to windows that didn't really open. The four poster bed was unnecessary in the size of room - in fact one of the uprights made it a bit of a squeeze to get past- others had obviously found the same due to the worn away paint that was obvious on it.
All in all, a really enjoyable stay and we would happily go back.

Even though we are locals if was our first visit in a long time so unsure what to expect.
We could not fault our visit we had a lovely table and the staff were very friendly and attentive. The portions are massive we shared the ribs to start then had burger each the food was very good.
Our dog comes everywhere with us and she was made to feel really welcome, would definitely return.

Breakfast was not included when we stayed. Breakfast is only served from 9.30am so a bit late if you want an early start We did have breakfast one morning and it was very nice and not an excessive price

Used to be great, is it new management
Answer from 186565David_W

Don't know if under new management. Certainly had work done during the last year. We found the food good a few weeks ago. The only down side is that it is very popular, and eating in the bar is not very civilised, as they pack in as many diners as possible. You need to be pretty gregarious to really enjoy it.
