Uplands Inn offers stunning views of the Leven Estuary and Morecambe Bay due to being 1 mile (or a 15 minute walk downhill) from the village of Cartmel on the fell. Originally a large residential house, the Hotel benefits from two acres of peaceful gardens which are perfect for walking dogs, al fresco dining, summer sunbathing or just taking in the views. The hotel is in the ideal location for visiting South Lakeland and the stunning Cumbrian coast. It is also a top choice for those visiting local events such as the Cartmel Races, the Steam Gathering Festival and the many events held by Holker Hall to name but a few. Furthermore, as the Inn is only a short drive from the M6 Motorway guests travel comfortably from a range of locations between Scotland and London. For guests, there is a choice of 8 comfortable bedrooms, 5 of which benefit from the stunning countryside views.

The small hotel was easy to find and ideally situated just outside Cartmel. Plenty of parking and a large garden with outside tables to enjoy the scenery and have a drink of a meal in the evening.
We were welcome by friendly staff members and showed to our room. We were in the Derwent Suite and it was a nice sized room with a large bathroom. We stayed for two nights and I think the only thing that could have been improved was that the bathroom could have done with a fresh coat of paint and a good clean of the walls to remove cobwebs. On a plus point the breakfast were exceptional and although I don`t eat a cooked breakfast I at last have found a hotel who offers muesli. The toast was also first rate served by warm and very friendly staff.
We ate in the restaurant on the second evening and was not disappointed and could have coffee in a comfy seat away from dinner tables. We shall be back!!

We spent three wonderful nights at Uplands Inn and had a brilliant stay. The room was clean and tastefully decorated, the staff were professional and friendly and the food was amazing. Normally we would eat in different restaurants during our trips away but we ate in the in house restaurant on each of the three evenings as not doing so would have been a missed opportunity! Prices were reasonable for the quality of the food and there was a good choice of breakfast options each morning. The ambience in the restaurant/lounge area was cosy and the views out across the bay were stunning. Our stay coincided with changes to COVID-19 measures for the hospitality industry and these were adopted to the letter. Rooms were not serviced due to the pandemic but any items requiring replenishment or replacing were done on request. We felt safe and very well looked after, we would recommend staying and eating here without hesitation!

Our stay in this establishment was a huge disappointment. The marketing was excellent, the experience quite the opposite.
The “hotel” or “Inn” as it variously describes itself was booked for a two night stay for fifteen retired professional friends for a long awaited get together post lockdown.
Our first surprise was that, despite the “hotel” holding the payment card details for each of the eight families, we were required to pay for the full cost of our visit before we were admitted.
During the serving of our first evening meal, we were asked to order drinks for after the meal because the bar would be closed at 10.00pm. We were aware that this would be the case so although this was unusual it was not unexpected. However, what came next was a second complete surprise. It was announced that when the bar closed so did all the accommodation of the hotel except the bedrooms and we were not able to meet to enjoy our reunion. We were effectively “sent to bed” at that time.
This was not an hotel as we understood the concept of an hotel but rather a restaurant with a lounge which closed at 10.00pm and a separate accommodation block from which there was no access to the restaurant or lounge or anywhere else to meet together after 10.00pm.
We spoke with the young members of staff about a possible extension because of our situation and our expectation of the stay but it was obvious that they were working under strict instructions and would not be able to change the rules. We asked to speak to the manager, who duly appeared, told us that it was common practice in the area and that the dividing door would be locked at 10.30pm. There could be no discussion. The following evening, she angrily stated, it would be closed at 10.00pm.
We had booked meals for both nights at the “hotel”, but, having been spoken to in the way we had been, we decided that we would cancel the meal for the following evening and seek a booking elsewhere in the local village. In fact, one of the couples, hating the atmosphere within the establishment, decided to go home. Our long-awaited reunion, and incidentally their celebration of fifty years of marriage was completely ruined.
Choosing somewhere else to dine proved to be a very wise decision. The remaining thirteen of us enjoyed an excellent meal in a hotel in the nearby village which proved to be much better value than at Uplands. The hospitality and service there were excellent. At the end of our meal, the room in which we had dined was available until after the bar closed at 11.00pm and the staff assured us that we could stay for as long as was reasonably required and that, had we been residents, for as long as we wished. The atmosphere was lively and convivial, and the service was brilliant. A complete contrast to “Uplands”
Not one of the fifteen members of our group will ever darken the door of Uplands again. The quality was mediocre. The customer service was virtually non-existent, and the atmosphere was dire and oppressive and, some said, almost institutional.
My advice to any prospective visitors would be to look beyond the rhetoric of the marketing before booking in. (particularly if there are several of you and you are expecting to be able to sit, relax and enjoy each other’s company). Caveat emptor – particularly when you are paying before you receive.

This group were verbally abusive and were actually asked to leave the establishment, which they refused to do for being abusive to staff and the owner. Our opening and closing times are readily advertised and the lounge area is locked after hours for security and safety reasons. This group wanted to sit in the lounge until 1am. Our staff also have homes to go to. We expect each of the 8 rooms to leave a similar review. We are here to ensure our customers have a great time and not to be spoken to in the way this group of adults in their 70s and 80s spoke to us! Rest assured they are not welcome back! Steph, Owner

The perfect English country inn - hotel, the Uplands hotel is a super place to stay if you are looking for a family owned business that work so hard to deliver a great experience during your stay with them .There is a very laid back feel from the moment you arrive. Very pretty gardens with a stunning view to take in from the spacious terrace outside with more than enough seats to go around if you are blessed with the weather. If not, the bar area and restaurant are very comfortable both with picture windows looking out over the hills to the bay. The bar area is a great place to meet and chat with other guests. The wine list is very reasonably priced with good quality wines and they also know how to make some proper g n t’s if that’s your thing. We stayed on a Thursday and made the most of the weeklyThai menu served on this night. The pad Tai was super fresh and tasty and if you like your food slightly spiced they are more than happy to accommodate you. A sign of great quality food cooked fresh for you. Again we found all the food to be fantastic during the stay inc a very nice breakfast which, if you book direct with the hotel instead of using an online platform which only charge the hotels for this service so reducing their profits, they offer your breakfast inc in the price of the room so more than a fair deal in my book. One of the reasons we chose the uplands was they are a dog friendly place and again we never felt awkward about having our well behaved pooch with us at anytime as did other guests which always seems to be a great ice breaker. The room we had was spotless with a very comfy bed even down to a thoughtful touch for the furry member of our family. One last touch I really liked was just as we were about to finish are meal the owner came over to let us know he had just reserved a table for us in the bar area, such a nice touch and was much appreciated, were we met some lovely fellow guests as it seemed everyone who was staying at the uplands are. Thank you to James & Steph and the team for making a mini break so enjoyable and we will be back, ( If we can get in, ha ha )

We had a wonderful break at Uplands Hotel. The rooms were clean and a good size, the bathroom was huge, the breakfast and evening meals were exceptional. They had a very good process covering the Covid restrictions and we felt very sae and well looked after - we can thoroughly recommend Uplands Hotel as a great base to Explore the Lake District. The staff went over and above to look after their guests to the highest standard

We were booked in for 2 nights as a group of 15 friends who had not been together for almost 2 years. Rooms were quite nice, the bar staff were friendly and the food was well cooked and good. So far so good. However, at 9.25pm as we were all almost finishing our evening meals we were told it was last orders at the bar at 9.30. We would be allowed drinking up time of half an hour but would be unable to have use of the lounge area after 10pm as this was also where the unmanned bar was situated. We insisted on speaking to the manager who duly arrived several minutes later but was unshakable in the decision. When we asked what we were supposed to do for the rest of the evening we were told we would have to go to our rooms.
Its the first time since I was a small child that I have been told to go to bed at 10 o'clock and as the hotel is 2 miles from Cartmel it was not possible at that time of night to drive into the village. We promptly cancelled the following evening meal and went for a very nice meal at another hotel in Cartmel on the 2nd night. The rooms were not being serviced daily due to covid and I was glad I had taken a bar of soap as there was none supplied. None of us will be going back to this hotel. I believe it is up for sale and am not surprised.

Room and bathroom OK; shower fine. Good views from room. Breakfast good.

The hotel just needs a little TLC.

Main room door needs easing as didn't shut without a shove (breaking fire regs) and bathroom door didn't shut properly. Bottom of bathroom door looked grubby. Nowhere to hang towels in bathroom.

Main patio (for drinks and outdoor dining) needed weeding and some of the patio furniture is rusting. Outdoor area around hotel needed a bit of a tidy up.

There are a few laminated signs around the bara bar and in room which although may be needed can make a place feel downmarket and less welcoming.

Felt more like a motel than small hotel and not good value at £150 a night.

Best to book direct as breakfast is included; going indirect costs any extra £12.95 per person.

Booked a 2 night stay in the Uplands for my wife's birthday and chose a King Size bed room. We were delighted when we got to the room with the overall furnishings, the lay out and we had a great view over the Kent estuary. we slept with the curtains back on both nights and the night sky was a myriad of bright stars - fabulous!
We had intended to eat out at least one night but due to my tardiness couldn't get a table anywhere in Cartmel. But that was a blessing in the end as the food in the hotel was excellent, well prepared and presented, served in a way that didn't feel threatening and good value for money. The staff, including the owners, always had time to talk to you and really made you feel wlecome. Overall an excellent 2 days/nights.

When plans changed due to rail strikes we decided to drive to Wales from Glasgow and visit Cartmel on the way. Uplands Inn was a perfect peaceful stay yet close to the village. We booked quite late so our room, Westmorland, had only a double bed which was a bit tight for my tall husband but that was the size the room could accommodate and all good. The bathroom was very spacious and modern with a separate tub and shower. We loved that there were 2 hanging closets and plenty of hangers which is lacking in some hotels. The view was lovely across the field and we could glimpse the bay.

The bar and dining area are really lovely and we really loved the terrace. It was very spacious with lots of tables and some umbrellas. Cushions were available to pick up from the reception area. It was so beautiful we opted to eat dinner on the terrace. Drinks delicious and food very good. We opted to include breakfast with our room and it was generous, well prepared and served by Denise with a cheery personality. The evening staff was really wonderful as well, I just failed to get their names. Nothing was too much to ask of any of the staff. The owners are on site interacting with guests and we’re great to talk to over drinks. They are truly interested in any improvements or additions the guests would like. We highly recommend Uplands Inn and hope to return some day!
