Right in the centre of Cartmel Square, we think they’re a great place to spend a night or two while visiting us or many of the other great places right on our doorstep. L’Enclume (3*) and Rogan & Co are just seconds away, while Heft is a 5 minute drive away up in High Newton. Teeming with history and character, the village is home to a medieval priory, the racecourse and the timeless, famous Cartmel Village Shop Sticky Toffee Pudding. An excellent, hearty breakfast is included in partnership with Cartmel Square B&B located just 50 yards over the square. This includes tea, coffee, a full English and toast. So, be it for food and drink, the gorgeous countryside, or just for a relaxing break, come and stay with us here at The Royal Oak, confident that you’ll enjoy a warm welcome and a comfortable stay. Please note there are no TV's in the pub or rooms, to ensure a relaxing stay for all guests.

What a difference between visits!! When we last visited the Royal Oak in 2020 to say that we were disappointed would have been an understatement but on hearing that it had been taken over by a local brewery and being real ale fans , we decided to give it another chance. We were delighted by the friendly, professional welcome and the knowledge demonstrated of their product. The beer garden was a great place to linger over a drink or two.
I was kindly shown one of the newly refurbished bedrooms and was extremely impressed, the quality of the furnishings was far beyond that of another popular pub offering accommodation only a few yards away.I was amazed that it wasn’t busier.
On our second day we tried a meal which was good quality at a reasonable cost.
This new venture deserves to do well and I look forward to visiting again on my annual visits to Cartmel.

The Royal Oak is in an ideal location at the heart of beautiful Cartmel, we had a comfy and clean room (RHYD), however, bizarrely no TV.
Be aware, breakfast is served across the road at ‘Coffee and Stays’, and whilst it was very nice, if limited, the Royal Oak has a financial arrangement with this place that allows one cup of tea/coffee per person and one slice of toast, any more and you have to pay for it !. In all my years of travelling and staying in Hotels & B&B’s, I have never experienced this before, I feel this is totally unacceptable. Will not be returning to the Royal Oak, whilst this practice continues.

After a recommendation from a neighbouring business we booked in for supper at the Royal Oak. We weren’t disappointed. Our table was close to a cheering open fire and there were some specials on the board. Friendly atmosphere with well behaved dogs and I’m told great beer. The service was really quick and friendly and I loved my whitebait and pork chop - the apple butter was delicious and if all felt seasonal and such good value too. We are booked in again tomorrow and staff were so friendly and welcoming too. A great evening.

Ordered starter fish cakes and hand cut chips and veg soup with toast for lunch.
Fish cakes tasted more like potato croquettes with v little fish, possibly none at all. Chips were very much like frozen chips, not cooked through so hard and not fluffy inside. Soup delicious but a little small for £5.95. Butter served in single use plastic portion pots.
Mentioned all the above to the waiter who reported it to the chef. Chef sent an apology via the helpful waiter.
Even though chef apologised the bill remained the same...£16.40.

Stayed here for 2 nights after dropping in for lunch over the summer. The rooms are very well appointed with a super-comfortable bed and large shower area. Spotlessly clean. We ate here both nights also and cannot fault the food at all. The beer selection is from Fell Brewery who are the owners and certainly doesn't disappoint.

Basically, its a country pub with nice rooms, great food/drink and a log fire - What more do you need?

Fantastic Sunday lunch! Called in without booking and luckily a table was available. Friendly service and a good range of real ales from local brewery to choose from. We ordered the Sunday roast, great portion size, the cauliflower cheese was ordered as an extra but everything else was included, fab that extra gravy was provided. Beef was really tender, melt in the mouth. We were so full afterwards we didn’t get chance to try a pudding. Lovely atmosphere, nice relaxing pub, dog friendly.

We visited for Sunday lunch with visiting family. All the food we had was of the highest standard. The roast beef was cooked to perfection, the real ale was very enjoyable and the desserts were amazing. It is rare to have a meal for 8 that comes out at the same time and is of such high quality. If you are visiting the area, The Royal Oak is the place to visit.

Really friendly staff serve excellent local beers in a beautiful hidden beer garden by the river. Highly recommended for a thirst quench ( our dog enjoyed her dip in the river too ). Recently bought by local brewery Fell who now serve their great selection of traditional ales & cider

Really enjoyed our stay. The room was very comfortable and spacious and the staff were very helpful and friendly.
We had a great evening meal too. At a quiet time they understandably had a small menu but with the aim that everything was good. My fish and chips were excellent. The beers from Fell Brewery are also top notch and perfectly kept.
The only thing some people might miss is that there was no TV in our room. We were quite happy with this but if you can’t live without it, be aware.

Probably the worse hotel i have ever stayed in. I was there for 3 nights unfortunately. This hotel advertises as a B and B but does not serve breakfast making you go to a local cafe. Totally naff. Food at the cafe was very poor so i only ate there once. Plus they will not allow you to depart from your allocated time. I only ate once in the hotel and the food there was equally appalling.
The rooms have no TV's ( a first in my experience!!) and as a final insult on the last morning there was no hot water so had to have a cold shower. Avoid this place anything else would be better.
