Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Lin & Graham made our stay relaxed and enjoyable. The views from the accommodation are truly beautiful , with challenging climbs to stunning viewpoints nearby. We walked the 10 minutes to Ullswater daily, where there were sports facilities and cafe stops. True to say that if the weather is fine, you won’t be inside for long. The accommodation is comfortable and interesting, with skilfully carved furniture a feature.
A delicious breakfast started our day, and pretty much kept me going until tea time.

I stayed one night at the School House B&B. The hosts tended to my every need. They recommended an excellent restaurant for my evening meal. My breakfast started with delicious, fresh fruit with Greek yogurt. Then, I had a tasty omelette with mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, and cheese. I had my own pot of French pressed coffee as well. We met as strangers but left as friends.

Now you don't often find a tropical-looking hideaway in amidst the wind-swept peaks and occasional summery days in the Ullswater Valley. But it's all right here, hiding in plain sight in the middle of Patterdale - and it's all yours if you get in quick. Run by Lancashire and Cumbrian couple Graham and Lin this has to be the neatest and cosiest hideaway this side of Ubud in Bali.

The Cumbria stone, roadside cottage - once a schoolhouse - belies the warm and Balinese themed interior (the owners of the establishment spent 25 years in Bali and brought many of the furnishings back with them - including a whole garden house). Featuring a double luxury suite, a double and a single room, the live-in B&B caters for hikers, lover of nature and just plain lovers.

Devotees of comfort and utterly stunning mountain views will bag the Bali suite - a large living room clad in stone and wood with a gorgeous view out over the garden and up to the mountains opposite. You will sleep on a carved wooden four-poster bed imported from Bali. Decadent! The other double and single upstairs rooms are not shy either and as a package, this place could happily support a group of travellers while sharing the aforementioned Bali suite lounge.

Catering currently to mostly cross-country treckers early bookers could snare themselves a pretty piece of paradise in Patterdale that would make for an ideal long-weekend getaway. Chef and man about the house Graham cooks a killer breakfast with all the works, while stylish hostess Lin will make you feel that the Old School is your home for a while.

This place is a hidden treasure but get in quick because those in the know have heard about it too. I will certainly be back and not just for one night.

Warm welcome from attentive and accomodating hosts. Excellent room on ground floor with interesting Indonesian furniture. Very well appointed, comfortable and clean with fine views out back. Excellent breakfast and fine packed lunch prepared for us. Nothing too much trouble and highly recommend, would stay here again for sure.

Lin and Graham were amazing hosts. They made us feel so welcome. Patterdale is a gem of a location. The views were fantastic. Everything was top class. We stayed for three nights and wish it could have been longer. Breakfasts were delicious. Could have not asked to meet
more friendly, engaging and hospitable couple.

This is a charming stone house built in the 1850s fitted with dark teak furniture from Micronesia. Lin and Graham were very accommodating, making sure I was comfortable and contented. Graham cooked delicious porridge made from Scottish oats based on his grandfather’s recipe. His fried eggs came from local chickens and were far better than the scrambled eggs I’d eaten at previous B&Bs. I slept in a large bed beneath a soft comforter, and woke refreshed and ready to hit the trail.

Had a lovely stay at the School House. We had a large room with ensuite and complete dining and sitting room for our own use as no-one else happened to be there. Lyn and Graham were extremely friendly and accommodating. They even supplied us with a plug-in fireplace heater to take the edge off the chilly evening air.

We stayed for two nights at this delightful B and B. The decor in our bedroom and attached living room was "Balinese quirky" and exceedingly comfortable. The bathroom was small for a big bloke like me, but any inconvenience was more than made up by the wonderful hospitality of Lin and Graham. We felt quite at home with two delightful people. We shall return!
