We grabbed ourselves a bargain from Travelzoo and enjoyed two nights at this hotel which is set in the most beautiful location, nestled into the valley and just two minutes walk from Ullswater Lake. And, it was a bargain indeed! Nowhere else in this prime location can you get what we did for the amount we paid. Our room was very clean and warm and though some might say the accommodation is dated, we found it to be perfectly adequate as a place to wash and sleep. The beds were comfortable and you couldn’t hear a thing during the night, it was so very peaceful. Each room has the usual kettle, tea, coffee, milk, TV, hairdryer etc. We had a view over the front looking out onto the surrounding hills and it was absolutely lovely to sit there by the window. The food is very very good indeed. Breakfast is buffet style comprising all the cereals, breads, yoghurt and fruit options alongside the hot offerings of eggs, bacon, sausages, beans, hash browns, tomatoes etc. Evening meal consists of three courses, with 4 options per course. Everything was served promptly – no waiting around, no fuss. The food was piping hot and is what I’d call good wholesome food. Never have I eaten a lamb casserole containing so little fat! Very tasty and if I’m honest, too much food. The staff in the restaurant are on the ball too – no dirty plates left lying around, everything served with a smile from every member of staff. A special mention to Hazel – boy does she know how to make a guest feel welcome! So friendly and helpful – she is made for the hospitality sector. Everyone was friendly – guests included and at breakfast one morning, a guest dropped a plate and it smashed. Then came a cheer and a round of applause from around 40 people having breakfast. It’s just a really nice atmosphere in this hotel. The bar is well stocked and is far cheaper than any of the local pubs – so even if you’re just looking for somewhere to have a drink in the evening, this is a cheaper option. Plenty of seating areas for groups as well as singles/couples and their far lounge offers an open fire surrounded by big, comfy settees which was just divine during our November stay. We had a cream tea offering as part of our deal and chef had just made the scones – so they were served warm with jam, butter and a dish of cream. Scrummy-dee-lish! Once again, a really welcome treat after a day out walking in the crisp winter weather. We’ll be back here again – it’s a no-brainer for what they charge. Some reviews are not so kind – and I’d say this ……. If you want a five star experience, go somewhere else AND PAY FIVE STAR PRICES! Some people will never be satisfied but for us – we feel that we got far more than we paid for in this prime lake district location.

This was our first trip to the Patterdale Hotel but it won’t be our last, and we have been to many Choice Hotels and like their “well organised” approach.
I really cannot understand any of the criticism you will see on here, the Patterdale does what it says on the tin!
This is a very good quality midrange hotel which does not claim to be a 5 Star, and it offers great deals. We stayed on a 4-night midweek Dinner Bed and Breakfast deal which was excellent value for money. Worth paying the supplement for a view room, which are clean and comfortable, just short of a mini-fridge.
The food was excellent, buffet breakfast but also some excellent breakfast menu choices including Kippers. The 3 course evening meal menus offered a varied classic range of foods, hearty and well prepared and delivered with the military precision we expect from Choice Hotels.
I perhaps wouldn’t recommend a visit to my vegan step-daughter or anyone with weird dietary requirements, but us “typical’s” should love it. The hotel is especially well placed for walkers and therefore specifically caters for them (this is a no dogs allowed hotel).
The views, location and weather were wonderful, and we will visit again as it is an great step-off point for touring the Lake District.

The room was on the small side, but the view was splendid. It was clean, the bed comfortable, hot water plentiful, towels fluffy and noiseless at night. Breakfast had plenty of choice for us - self service ,with plenty of staff on hand giving prompt attention. The evening meal was toothsome. It is not gourmet dining. The staff were attentive and helpful. The manager was on hand at meals but we heard no complaints when we were in the restaurant.

We have just spent a 3 night weekend break at the Patterdale Hotel. We found the Hotel was just as described on the website. Yes, the room we had was a bit cramped but it was clean. The room wasn't serviced for our stay but we were told that on our arrival and we were only to ask if we needed anything. We don't expect anything else for a 2 or 3 night stay we can manage to make the bed and keep the bathroom clean ourselves. The restaurant staff were brilliant. Meals were excellent. The veg were cooked just right not a soggy mess. I had lamb one evening and it just fell off the shank it was so tender. Bottle of House wine priced reasonably for a restaurant. Entertainment on Saturday evening was a singer and he wasn't bad but there are a couple of other seated rooms if you prefer to give the entertainment a miss. Main plus for me-No dogs. I like dogs but don't want to share my holiday accommodation with them. Yes you can have more select hotels but The Patterdale suited us. Everything is reflected in the price. We would certainly visit again.

Another good break for us at the patterdale, we always stay here in winter the hotel rooms and public areas are always warm and clean. The staff are very good and we have noticed most of them are long term. Very good choice of meals for dinner and a good buffet breakfast, you can walk into the hills from the hotel door, value for money without a doubt

Me and my wife have stayed here many times over the years but not since Jonathan left as manager and we have had our son.
The staff are as friendly and welcoming as ever and the food was the usual good standard with huge portions. Children's meal was huge too and our 3 year old has never eaten so much. Beds had been updated since our last stay and looked fresh and nice with a comfortable bed and temperature was perfect .
Our son along with another guests son loved the games cupboard in the lounge. We will be returning later in the year and knowing how accomodating they are with children we will be staying longer.

Stopped by for a bite to eat and a drink after a walk to Patterdale. Sat out front in the gorgeous sunshine. Very friendly barman. This place could make an absolute killing if it just made a few improvements such as outside table service and updating its menu. It seems a missed opportunity and am sure the Hotel Inspector would have a field day if she were to visit and offer some good advice. Not knocking the place at all. They serve a good pint of local ale which is great, but the place could be so much much more.

Don’t overlook this hotel when looking for somewhere to stay in Patterdale. Yes the clientele is of an older generation over 60, but then my husband is 60 and I am 58. But it does mean that there are no slamming doors or screaming children at night. The people who stay are walkers, and people who love the area. The hotel is basic no fancy bottles of shampoo or bottles of water or biscuits and it could do with a bit of an update but saying all of that the rooms are clean and there is tea and coffee making facilities and soap/shower gel on the side in dispensers. They have a bar and lovely lounge area to sit. The staff are extremely helpful and nothing is too much trouble. The customer service is extremely good. Now the evening meals well, I have stayed in some 5 star hotels and not had the variety every night as you do here. Each night the 3 course meals and the choice was fantastic. The value for money too, you didn’t feel you were being ripped off. The drinks were good value too. Yes it was a bit rushed but if you wanted a bit more of a break in between courses then I am sure they would be more than happy to oblige. There was a good buzz about the place and everyone there seem to be having a good time. The breakfast was also good each morning. We stayed in a room at the front of the hotel so we had a lovely view. We would definitely stay here again when we were going walking in the Lakes. Definitely fantastic value.

We had a great stay. Due to the exceptionally reasonable price we were not expecting plush accommodation, the room was basic but clean and the shower had excellent pressure. A 3 course meal and breakfast was included in our booking. Food was good.
The highlight of our stay was the staff who went above and beyond. While checking in we had the kind offer of taking our bags up to our room. A table was reserved in the restaurant for us and our 3 month old baby on the second day, without asking because the staff had noticed it was handy for us to use as space for the car seat.
All together great value for money and a good base for exploring.

Most reviews of this hotel highlight the wonderful location and views, helpful staff or comfortable rooms, but having just enjoyed a 5 day break, the one big plus was the standard of food in the restaurant. My wife and I enquired whether the hotel would be able to meet her dietary requirements as she is onion and gluten intolerant. We ask this question of most hotels we stay at, and receive assurances only to find a different story when we arrive. I am pleased to say that the Patterdale Hotel completely bucks the trend of other hotels. The restaurant’s waiters are fully understating and couldn’t be more helpful. The chef has to be complimented on the superb quality of the meals from a varied choice menu. If you have an food allergy, you are given a copy of that days menu with every item marked up indicating whether each individual ingredient is gluten-free or has onion as part of its ingredient. The chef also marks up the dessert menu in the same way. During our 5 day stay my wife was able to enjoy choices of quality meals, she has never experienced in a long while. The chef who I believe, the hotel’s literature names as Ken McDonald, and his entire team, including the receptionists who couldn’t be more helpful in explaining the procedure to guests with dietary requirements, are all part of an efficient and professional team, and deserve every accolade bestowed upon them.
