Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I had low expectations for this place and was so much hoping that I would be pleasantly surprised but sadly even my low expectations were not adequately met. We know the place and have had the odd beer on coming down from the mountains over many decades but have never ventured further than the grass outside. Sadly the ambience in the bar is poor to non-existent and the "bar meals served daily" are, in fact, a choice between sandwiches and toasted sandwiches which are just sandwiches made with toast. Even the chips, which you would have thought were difficult to get wrong were poor. Friendly enough staff but this place could be so much better with a little investment and love. It is difficult to believe that, in a location like this, there is no call fro a friendly inviting bar with an open fire and good basic pub food. With the White Lion having shut its doors apparently permanently, there are very few options in Patterdale in November. We had a lunch to forget during a week when all other culinary offerings in Cumbria were exquisite. So sorry to say, but this could be so good but isn't.

We stayed at The Patterdale for a few days with family. It was the perfect place as a base to explore and spend time together. The views from the hotel are incredible. The staff couldn’t have been more polite and helpful. Evening menu was changed daily, the food was delicious. Probably the best cooked breakfast I have had. Our room was comfortable and warm, would say the bath/shower needed a bit of an update, but other than that, great weekend. Would definitely return.

I stayed here with two friends for a walking holiday. We arrived Sunday and stayed 5 nights. We had a family room room with half board. The hotel is a two star but the accomodation and service was excellent. The room was comfortable - there were two single beds and a small double. Bathroom was clean and functional. Restaurant was everything we needed - buffet breakfast with freshly prepared food. Dinner was three course and varied each evening. Bar area was popular in the evenings and very reasonably priced. The difference maker in hotels is often the staff and the Patterdale team are excellent. Room service, waiting staff and bar staff were all friendly and very helpful.

Not stayed here since the pandemic and I was quite disappointed to see it’s lost it’s charm. No tea and coffee now after dinner unless you pay for it, no scrambled egg or fried bread at breakfast, rooms in desperate need of refurbishment and no fillet steak option as an extra on the menu. Our room had mouldy silicon around the windows & torn wallpaper. This is despite paying the highest price we’ve ever paid to stay there. The only saving grace was the restaurant supervisor he was superb and had attention to detail. He has been there many years and always makes you feel welcome. Some of the other staff would do well to take his lead. Talking of staffing, they have cut the maid service to request only. Certainly when we stayed it did not appear to be full and the TV and lounge room was empty most evenings which was a shame as it used to be a hive of activity. Been staying here for over 10 years. Sadly we will not be returning. Paid close to £1000 for 4 nights for two rooms.

Most reviews of this hotel highlight the wonderful location and views, helpful staff or comfortable rooms, but having just enjoyed a 5 day break, the one big plus was the standard of food in the restaurant. My wife and I enquired whether the hotel would be able to meet her dietary requirements as she is onion and gluten intolerant. We ask this question of most hotels we stay at, and receive assurances only to find a different story when we arrive. I am pleased to say that the Patterdale Hotel completely bucks the trend of other hotels. The restaurant’s waiters are fully understating and couldn’t be more helpful. The chef has to be complimented on the superb quality of the meals from a varied choice menu. If you have an food allergy, you are given a copy of that days menu with every item marked up indicating whether each individual ingredient is gluten-free or has onion as part of its ingredient. The chef also marks up the dessert menu in the same way. During our 5 day stay my wife was able to enjoy choices of quality meals, she has never experienced in a long while. The chef who I believe, the hotel’s literature names as Ken McDonald, and his entire team, including the receptionists who couldn’t be more helpful in explaining the procedure to guests with dietary requirements, are all part of an efficient and professional team, and deserve every accolade bestowed upon them.

Called in for lunch on a sunny day, so we sat outside, the barman was very friendly and chatty, we had sandwiches and a drink, the food was excellent and prices fair. Inside the bar area was clean, the choice of menu was also good and prices good for the area. The carpark for the hotel is over the main road.

Only stopped for lunch on the way past, but surly staff, burnt food. Generally very poor. Such a great location but staff not remotely interested in helping or being welcoming. What a shame. I cannot recommend.

Made many friends over the years with both staff and visitors, but sadly it’s slipping rapidly down, only one or two good staff members left and what can only be described as ghost management and maintenance, very poor- see photos and decide for yourself.
