Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We didn’t stay here overnight, but were staying locally and called in for some food (around 5.45pm). We purchased drinks and found a free table (some had reserved but as many didn’t). When asked if we wanted anything else we said we would want food shortly only to be told, sorry no food we are fully booked, always book a night ahead. We are staying in the area and I would imagine a lot of passing trade is the same. Pre booking on a Tuesday shouldn’t be necessary. I am certain at our available table we could have been allowed there to stay and eat. We drank our drinks and left , for, as it turns out, a more accommodating pub just up the the road. Real shame as the pub was pleasantly decorated with a nice atmosphere and my husband said the shipyard ale was good.

Went here for evening dinner after walking up helvellyn with my son & wasn’t disappointed. The dining room was very cosy & we sat on a large farmhouse style wooden table. The owners were very welcoming & friendly & served a superb steak pie that was quality slow cooked meat in very good pastry. Would recommend this pub & will be back the next time I’m around that part of the Lake District.

My wife and I stayed here for one night. We checked in at 9pm as we were visiting family in the local area. Earlier in the day my wife check our booking and saw that check out time is 9:30am! This is not something we had noticed when booking and were disappointed as we would have liked to have a short lie in. This is the earliest check out time either of us have ever known! My wife messaged the hotel and asked what time breakfast is, hoping that we could eat after check out at 9:30. We were informed by message that breakfast is served 8-8:45am! Again, we were disappointed as we would not be able to relax in the morning before our long drive home. I had planned on our arrival to ask about this and see if there was any chance of a later breakfast. I was surprised and disappointed by the member of staff who clearly couldn’t be bothered with my questioning and dismissively told me to read the information in the room and also told me that they were short staffed! Our room was small and very dated. Certainly not quite what we expected. On a positive the room was clean which to me takes president over the decor. The breakfast, although a bit too early for us, was very nice and we had no complaints on that front. As we left the hotel, we walked past a couple of members of staff with our bags. We both found it really strange that nobody said goodbye or acknowledged that we were leaving. It was just a very strange experience. Overall we have to say we were disappointed. When we stay in a hotel we expect to get value for money, we didn’t feel we got this due to feeling rushed in the morning and not fully rested. We will not be retuning!

What a shame, a promising beautiful pub haphazardly run. Owner seemed disinterested with being there, limited menu, accommodation was lacking. Toilet seat did not fit, empty shower gel bottle, minimal t-bags and sugars. Breakfast is only open for 1 hour, food stops at 8pm at night, and you need to check your bill as other drinks are put on your tab, that we never had. The owner rectified this, but no apology or interest at all. Unfortunately we would never return.

A great little find for a short break in the Lake District. Having never been to Troutbeck, we were unsure but found the location to be excellent. The accommodation was clean and comfortable and evening meals tasty. The price was reasonable, no complaints at all.

Stopped for Sunday Lunch - possibly the unfriendliest and most unwelcoming greeting I’ve ever experienced. We arrived around 12 noon and asked a staff member if lunch was being served She was non-committal despite a sign on the door saying ‘lunch served from 12 noon’. We waited outside the door with our dogs while she said she would check if it was possible to eat outside. She didn’t return, so my partner went inside to find out what was happening, and was invited by the manager to ‘go away’. Very strange behaviour from a pub.

Great base for Keswick area of The Lakes. Hotel was spotless, food was fantastic and reasonably priced. Couldn't really fault much at all. Parking on site, dog friendly and nice selection of drink. Great selection fir Breakfast which fills you for the day. Well definitely be back.

Cosy pub in a lovely location with excellent food and choice of drinks, Only downside is that the owner didn't seem to have much social skills and if anything didn't seem like he wanted to be there... Everything seemed like to much hard work for him. Not good when you are running a business.

Stayed here with family and our dog and absolutely loved it. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, really not sure where some other reviews are coming from regarding feeling unwelcome and that staff were rude, I just can’t see it. Everyone was absolutely lovely and nothing was a bother. Lovely little outside beer garden area so is perfect for a drink in the sun, rooms were a little small but overall great and very clean. Only issue I had was the beds were a little hard and slightly uncomfortable to sleep on but other than that the room was lovely. We had breakfast here twice which was great and came out very quickly. Also came for food both evenings we were there and the food is absolutely fantastic, tried a few dishes between us on both occasions and all was great but the highlight was the steak and ale pie, honestly one of the best meals I’ve ever had. My only issue and the reason I’ve given 4 stars and not 5 was due to atmosphere in the bar area at breakfast and evening, there is no music or if there is it’s extremely low and basically can’t hear it. This makes the atmosphere very awkward and eerie, making us feel like we had to whisper and overall just uncomfortable. A large group behind us one night commented on this as well saying it felt very eerie and dead. Definitely think some background music would up the vibe and take this place to the next level. Overall had a lovely stay, very dog friendly and welcoming, and the food is absolutely excellent.
