Little mell is Cosy cottage set in a quiet location with great views and only short drive from Keswick and not too far from Ambleside via Glenridding, The troutbeck Inn next door to the cottage was a welcoming pub that was ideal after a long walk, serving hot food to eat in or take away . The cottage itself provided linen , towels and a full self catering kitchen in order for you to be able to cook a meal if you wished. The shower was fantastic! Very powerful. I would stay at this cottage again due to it’s location & that we could also take our dog with us . It was a comfortable stay , thank you.

We stayed in one of the cottages owned by Troutbeck Inn for 7 nights. It was a spacious open plan cottage for 2 people & pets were allowed. Linen & towels were provided & the kitchen had all the appliances you needed if you wanted to cook a meal. It was a clean & comfortable place to stay & the location was very good. The Troutbeck Inn provided hot food to eat in or takeaway & it was a welcome site after a long walk . The shower was fab ! Very powerful. Ate here with my partner on 16/10 and so glad we found this charming pub/restaurant. As well as the standard pub grub their menu includes some more gastro type choices. What we chose was tasty, fresh and home made. The room we ate in (there are two) was cosy with a log fire burning and the staff/owners were warm and welcoming and managed the covid safety measures well. Will definitely be back when next in the area.

There were a couple of positives about our one night stay at this inn, but unfortunately the negatives outweigh them. The staff were very friendly and enthusiastic and the location is perfect for touring the north Lakes. However our room was shabby, the bathroom inadequate - cloakroom size basin that we couldn't get the kettle under the tap, dim lighting, over basin light did not work, shower base grouting very black and overall not a nice room to be in. On choosing breakfast I was told that I could not have fruit instead of cereal, no fruit was available. Our evening meal was average, frozen vegetables and bought in puds, even more disappointing when I was told I couldn't have coffee as the machine was broken. Breakfast did not delight, brittle overcooked bacon and no alternative to cereal. Covid or no covid, this establishment falls way below the standard normally offered in the Lake District, we will not be returning.

Booked a single room for start of April on account of it being too cold to camp. It was freezing cold (ice, a few snow flurries etc on my way up and not warm any day I was there). It was warm inside.
The room was right over the porch on the "quiet" side, though with double glazing I didn't hear anything anyway. The room is big enough not to be falling over things all the time, but not quite large enough for a chair. Minor inconvenience, there's a cover and extra cushion thing that make the bed comfy to sit on. En-suite shower room was fine and the water heater in the shower heated up fast and had good temperature control. None of that holding your hand in the water and juggling with taps until the temperature is right.
The inn is still operating under some Covid mitigations, and doing it very well. No daily cleaning of room but a basket of refills is left outside the door to restock tea and coffee etc. Whoever did that noticed I like my tea with quite a lot of milk so I got extra milk without having to ask. Order breakfast the night before. All of it arrived well cooked and piping hot. I recommend the full English though the porridge was good too.
Family came over and we ate in the restaurant. Good quality food, well cooked. Best fish and chips I have had for ages and I was told that the steak pie was great as well.
Everywhere was spotless and everyone who worked there was open and friendly and helpful.
Will likely be back soon.

Rather bizarre experience tried to book a table
For Sunday lunch only to be told they didn’t know if they were opening as they were short of cleaners. Having had a couple of drinks we tried to order a final round only to be told the table was needed as it was booked. The sign on the table said it was booked in 45 minutes, but we were told to take the drinks outside, unsurprisingly we declined and cancelled the order. We all got the distinct impression that the staff didn’t really give a toss and were generally rude / dismissive to customers. Having now read the reviews on line this seems to be a common theme. I can’t comment on the food as we never ate there but as a customer you seem to be get the impression that you’re doing them a favour visiting. I won’t be going back.

Room Tip: Probably best to book but based on my experience and others might be best to look at other options.

We booked three nights here as a base for exploring the local area. This is an old traditional, village pub and has kept its character so do not expect state of the art rooms and decor. The staff are lovely. The place was clean and tidy and our room was functional; we did not intent spending too much time in it. Food was nice though you had to book early for a chance of a table for dinner (Lockdown days were in full swing) Even a table for an evening drink required a booking so you had to plan your day more than usual. There is parking on site and you are positioned close to Penrith and Keswick so there are other eating places on your doorstep within fifteen minutes drive either way. We would stay here again if we were in this area.

We had a really awful time. Last minute booking for one night stay. Didn't read any reviews! Hotel is in a good location and the room we booked at £130 good size and clean. The stay became a catalogue of misinformation and unhelpful (poor) customer service given with a smile that was strangely at odds with the actions and didn't seem genuine. Eventually enough was enough a final straw was reached and I raised a concern. We were then accused of being rude and reading 'the wrong' trip advisor reports whilst at dinner. (We hadn't actually been reading them but admittedly we had begun to discuss if we should have!) The lady who we understood was the owner said she wanted us to leave her home ( Frankly we would probably happily obliged but having had wine with our meal it really wasn't an option!) We retreated from the unpleasant restaurant atmosphere to our room and did then look at the reviews. The penny began to drop,
Our quite bizarre experience followed a theme, if its all going well its all fine and friendly, if you have any concerns ( different story) they don't seem able to address these in a professional manner. The response to our concern was the lady being very emotional and giving a completely inappropriate and quite aggressive response. Small independent hotels are usually very good with flexible and customer focussed service. In the case of this hotel it seems any negative feedback is taken personally. Responding to customer concerns is at the heart of good service. We paid to stay in a 'hotel' and had expectation of a reasonably professional level of service, we didn't book into the ladies home. We are like most people mindful of the particular circumstances that the hospitality sector has and continues to face including potential shortages; an occasional apology and a helpful approach normally gets everyone through. A little honesty with and respect for customers would go a long way at this hotel, it costs nothing and doesn't need to be in short supply . We would never return here and suggest that potential travellers read a selection of reviews before considering booking.

This was our first visit to Troutbeck Inn - staying at a nearby caravan site we decided to book here for Friday evening dinner. The menu was excellent and the staff were incredibly cheery and friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed the food. Main course vegetables were fresh and cooked just perfectly. Portions are very generous. A glass of Wainwright ale went very well with it. We enjoyed the experience so much we decided to go back for dinner again two nights later. We'll definitely be coming back!

My wife and I booked this place relatively late because of lockdowns and the Covid crisis. I am glad we found the Troutbeck Inn because it ticked most of the boxes for us. I should note, as have others, that Covid precautions are in place and that some customers, including paying guests may struggle to book a table for a meal or drinks. We were OK and found the owners and staff to be the perfect hosts. Breakfast was pre booked and a sheet of paper was supplied to guests in order that they state their preferred choices. This worked for us so quite happy with that. Evening meals were fine too, a pretty good menu with enough choices to keep most people happy. Our room (6) was big enough for our two nights stay, bed was comfy and bathroom looked as if it had been recently re-fitted. Only little gripe was that the tap hot water pressure was very low. No problems though with the power shower. The Inn is set back from the main A66 road and traffic noise was not an issue at all. The views around the Troutbeck Inn are astounding with Blencathra dominating in the distance. I would like to think that should we return to the lakes, then this accommodation would be foremost in our minds.

Dogs are allowed in one side of restaurant, the Bar.
Pretty sure they do have cider, but being a real ale aficionado, don't really register the cider.
I think so - the owner has a young dog that was certainly welcoming everyone in the bar (not sure abut restaurant).
