I never bother writing reviews but after staying at Broadoaks last week I felt compelled to do so. Where do you start with such a wonderful place , this will have been our eighth or ninth visit and every single time the standard never drops from the stunning setting to the warm professional welcome and service from all the staff members it makes the start to your stay special and that is before you see the rooms or sample the food. Every time we have stayed we have had cream teas that are lovely and you can upgrade to afternoon tea but be warned it is fantastic and you may need to book a late slot for your evening meal. The standard of service and the quality of the food is stunning, everything on the menu is divine , the cheese board is my wife’s favourite and then breakfast the next morning is one of the tastiest I have ever had. The rooms that we have been lucky enough to stay in are all beautiful with loads of extra special little touches that make all the difference to your stay especially if like us you have a busy work schedule and can only grab the odd day here and there one night here feels like a really special treat. Then the bathrooms , we have stayed in numerous rooms , all beautiful but always try to get Pine if it is available , you will not see another bath like it , it is more like a swimming pool but oh so relaxing you will never want to get out. To summarise don’t think about booking this hotel just do it , you will not regret it , everything is perfect from the setting to the staff , the rooms and the amazing food . We can not wait to return as soon as possible next year for another fantastic stay. See you all soon and thank you. James and Amanda Keaveny

Where to start!!! It’s hard to put into words how amazing this place is but I will really try!!! Firstly the staff, from our first appointment with little Jo, we knew this has to be the place we got married. From the first meeting we felt so comfortable with her, she was sweet and friendly and very informative. Nothing was made to feel like an inconvenience when it came to questions we had. That held up through the 2 and a half years we worked with them. From our appointment calls to me just needing someone to rant to about things that stressed me out she was there and for that I am forever grateful, you ended up fast become a friend as well as our wedding coordinator. You are amazing little Jo!!! Between her and the wonderful Mel we always had someone willing to help us with what ever we needed!! Due to their attention to everything we had told them we had a wedding better than anything I could have dreamed off!!! The night time staff held up the amazing works too so a massive thank you to Dan, Ash and Jasmine you were all incredible!!we also can’t forgot the amazing chefs on that night, our wedding breakfast and the evening food was unbelievable, a massive thank you to Damien and Claude!! What you can do with food is just art!! The venue itself is like something from a fairytale!!! We fell in love the first time we saw it, we referred to it as a little hidden gem because none of our families had heard of it before but safe to say they all want to go back as soon as possible!! The couldn’t believe how amazing everything was from the rooms, to the stunning grounds to the little details all over. They finally understood why we choose to get married so far from home. It’s just magically it’s impossible not to fall in love with it!! So I know I said It was hard to put into words, well I clearly found them and couldn’t stop once I started!! There is just too much to love about this wonderful place and all the amazing people who work there!!! Thank you all so much

We had a beautiful overnight stay at Broadoaks as a treat to end our trip in the Lakes and made use of their midweek offer. Our room was upgraded, which was a lovely surprise, to the Ash room which had a spa bath and a huge bed with great views of the grounds and further to lake windermere. We had afternoon tea on arrival which was delicious and there was plenty of food for the both of us. Dinner and breakfast was great too but the afternoon tea was a highlight of all the meals. Have recommended this hotel to family and friends for a special occasion, it really is worth it. If you’re considering booking, do it!

We had our wedding here at Broadoaks, having use of the whole venue for two nights. We really couldn't have asked for a better venue. It was beautiful, private and truly special. The grounds made for wonderful photos, and the different areas of the main house were perfect for giving our guests places to socialise. We felt in such safe hands throughout the whole process, and our wedding co-ordinator Mel was able to help advise us and ensured that the day ran super smoothly. Our guests felt very much at home and were all astounded by the beautiful rooms and delicious food. There was a wonderful atmosphere and the staff were incredible. We hope to come back for special occasions for many years to come and remember what a wonderful experience you gave us.

We had a brilliant return visit for an overnight stay at Broadoaks Country House Hotel staying in the Pine room. This was our third visit but the first for almost 8 years, so we hoped it had still retained its Victorian charm and also the fantastic reputation it had for food, as is Michelin recommended. The good news was the food was still out of this world, each of the 4 course evening meal was superb and breakfast the next morning was also first class. The hotel is also a renowned wedding venue, where you can book out the whole hotel for a wedding and you could not wish for a better setting in the stunning grounds, which are only a mile away from Windermere. The hotel was still totally charming with original period furniture, oak panelling and original open fire places, just as we remembered it. We stopped in the Pine room, which was superb, the most comfortable bed we had ever slept in at any hotel and it had the most amazing sunken bathtub with whirlpool jets and TV inserted in the bathroom as well – prefect. The only negative we had was the cream tea on arrival, it was very well presented but the scones were hard and tasted very doughy, mine just crumbled when I tried to cut into them, a real disappointment – thankfully the rest of the food we had saved the day! If you want to see my full review of Broadoaks, the room, the bathroom, the gardens, the food and the staff, check it out on my YouTube channel: Alan METALMAN - Outdoors

This is a really pleasant little Country House Hotel. We had a package deal for dinner, bed and breakfast and were pleasantly surprised by the really lovely room. Dinner was excellent with attentive staff keen to help with dietary requirements. Would definitely recommend this hotel as the staff elevate the experience from good to excellent.

I feel a little disheartened writing this, as I feel like the Events Team played an integral role in our wedding journey, however, I was disappointed with certain aspects of our wedding. We booked a two day exclusivity package for midweek, which seemed really attractive to us as it was advertised as extremely affordable and in-line with our budget, but the costs quickly increased, including down to linen charges for additional guests that we were already paying for. Jo was always pleasant with us, and enthusiastic about our day, and for the day she was accompanied by the very down to Earth accommodating Mel who helped ease my anxieties. All decor boxes were labelled and ordered, and I additionally put them into sections the first afternoon upon arrival. However, I felt there was a little tension and Jo felt overwhelmed, to the point we felt like we were being irritating. Flowers that I wanted put out of the way and not used, were just left on the side and ended up being put in the display. They were super accommodating, however, printing off an additional photo for us, for the Memory Wall. We returned after the bridesmaid get together around 11pm so I could complete decorating the moon arch and found the decor had been moved into different places. My bridal party and myself, with the help of the amazing Stellan? proceeded to get everything in order and lay out the chairs for the ceremony with some examples of how I wanted it to look, as a guide so nothing was missed or mixed up. I was pleasantly surprised with the decor for the day, and it did look great. Sadly, my autumnal display was placed in the Orangery and not the doorway, and the Orangery bar was closed off at all times when I was under the impression it would be open for the evening; as a result, a large number of our guests spent the evening in the entrance bar and music room cutting the evening short. On the morning of the wedding, no one came to see me, at all. Until I was running behind schedule. I was asked to put a schedule together with having a larger bridal party and specifically said I didn’t want everyone in The Retreat at the same time, yet all bridal party and guests, were gathered in the living area, massively causing stress to the working artists and photography/videography team as they couldn’t move, my dress had to be moved into the smaller bedroom, and I took to the larger bedroom for bridal preparations due to high anxiety with the excessive number of people; no coordination was included during this time. The breakfast tray wasn’t collected and no one could sit due to this. I personally work in the wedding industry and have worked 100’s of weddings, to which a coordinator has always introduced themselves on the morning and dipped in and out throughout, so I felt let down and disregarded. The groom was asked to leave his room early so ceremony guests could be checked in, rather than their luggage being held somewhere until after the ceremony, or this change over being done by staff during the ceremony. It was unsettling and stressful for my groom and photography team. There was a mix up with rooms the night before too, due to a Room Allocation sheet mix up and changes not noted or queried when more than one was completed. My cousin ended up paying to stay somewhere else with no consideration given by the person on reception at the time. Photos were taken of the rooms upon arrival due to worry over the damage deposit and I’ve attached photos of what was found. However, I would like to say how amazing I personally found The Retreat and guests found the other rooms. My only advice would be to be mindful that the baths take a while to fill. Coordination throughout the day was scarce, with the room change over taking 2 hours instead of 1 hour; absolutely no one around to coordinate photo time and everyone being huddled in the entrance to avoid the rain when I unoriginally asked for everyone to be guided outside into the rain, with umbrellas for photos with a difference, however this wasn’t accommodated and we received one group photo on the staircase, again with no coordination. Food wise, we discussed back and forth regarding options, as the original decision to have the Classic Buffet seemed inappropriate after the menu for it was changed after Covid, and the menu did not seem enough for the price, nor would I, as the bride, have eaten any of it. It was suggested amendments be made and we were offered chipolata sausages. We were told we could have the same hot buffet option served for the Arrival Dinner, for the Wedding Breakfast too, as a substitute; later the budget planner increased as we were going to be charged for this. After my husband called up again, this cost was removed and for that we were grateful. My Mother-in-Law didn’t receive the Arrival Dinner she was supposed to get, to accommodate her dietary requirements, and no one received more than one glass of wine for the Wedding Breakfast; the children also waited so much longer for their food, creating a little chaos and boredom. Additionally, no drinks were served to the children yet they were paid for. The food was to an okay standard, not 5 Star, and I worry, not enough for the guests we were supposed to feed, as we ran out and some guests didn’t attend. The brownie, however, was delicious! Breakfast brought to The Retreat in the morning was dry and minimal, not enough for everyone. My makeup artist was also a guest the night before and received no breakfast, when it was documented that she was staying and would be in The Retreat. Evening food, was an extreme disappointment. We paid £800 to feed our guests, and received 4 pizzas that looked like they were frozen pizzas, with some undercooked fries that couldn’t have fed even 20 guests; we had over 60 guests. The food was placed on a table in the entrance way of the building, with the door wide open during a rain storm. There was no mention in the Master Plan of this being served in the entrance way instead of the restaurant. Nobody ate the food for obvious reasons that is was cold, hard and wet. So money was wasted here and paid for requirements not adhered to. Also, our cake maker specifically asked for the macarons from our wedding cake to be wrapped up for the groom to take home and we didn’t receive these. His gifted engraved glass from myself, was also collected from Riverhaven when he was asked to leave early, and we haven’t received that back. The entrance way seemed to be used for a lot of the wedding, including our Memory Wall, which was full of passed loved ones being placed there on the corner going round to the Music Room, and as a result, was knocked and damaged until I moved it myself into the function rooms where there was plenty of room. When I mentioned this, and that it was consistently being knocked by guests, I was told ‘how awful of them’, when it shouldn’t have been placed there, in a walkway, in the first place. Additionally, our cut up wedding cake was placed here for guests (not exactly something else that should be wasted lightly due to how much it cost) until I again, moved it. Lastly, our guest book was placed on the window ledge here too, right next to the cut up cake. It ended up covered in cake and children’s writing all over it, because they were the only ones that could see it was there. Ultimately, the use of the entrance for all of these things, really upset me, as it was managed with complete disregard. There was plenty of room in the function rooms. We were told the building would be lit up to our colours in the evening of our wedding and this didn’t happen. In line with health and safety, the steps leading up to The Reatreat, Boudoir and Redwood Suite, are extremely slippery, with no handrails for the latter two rooms. There is a dip/crevice to the path/roadway right outside of The Retreat and Mother of the Bride fell on the morning of the wedding with our daughter, resulting in a later trip to hospital. Thank you for recording this. Lastly, we feel there was just not enough staff on hand. The bar was left unattended frequently, with the bell (that is out there for a reason) being rung numerous times. Unfortunately, one of these times it was the groom who rang it and he was snapped at by a member of staff and told to stopped pressing it. Additionally, staff were overheard saying ‘I wish they’d stop ring that f@#king bell’. When I’m hindsight, it wouldn’t have to be if staff were present at all times, especially when health and safety precautions and insurance policies, should be adhered to at all times. Ultimately, we feel the entire day, although the best day of our lives, was badly coordinated, managed and lacked consideration. We feel, we were treated differently possibly to other guests, having read other reviews. The wedding certainly didn’t reflect an £11,000 midweek wedding, and nor were we treated with the respect expected to a bride and groom paying a considerable amount of money. I will thank Jo for our gifted drinks, and memorabilia upon departure, but just believe we certainly didn’t receive a Five Star service or wedding. Special shout out to the maintenance men in hand, as they brought humour and help, to what could have been a disaster after realising our moon arch had been damaged, and they saved the day. Another shoutout to Dan, who was brilliant in the evening and tried his hardest to be in many places at once. We will be following up this review with a formal email to the venue.

Broadoaks has a reputation for friendliness and a service that goes the extra mile. Our most accessible weddings are fixed-price, beautiful packages – and, of course, we do ‘bespoke’ weddings too. Because the elements of wedding packages, such as that described, are pre-agreed we can offer lower prices around set menus and services. We understand weddings can be stressful and we always do what we can to accommodate any changes within the package and push the event budget to the max to deliver perfection – or - absolutely no problem if the budget is there for additional requests (with sufficient notice). We take pride in making weddings perfect and have a body of great feedback from the couples it has been our great pleasure to host on their big day as demonstrated across other reviews. It was also very unfortunate that guests at the wedding party started fighting in the hotel towards the end of the evening, something we have never encountered before, with staff having to move in to break it up. We wish you every happiness in your new life together.

What else can I say other than THANK YOU Broadoaks for giving my husband and I the most magical wedding day! We knew of Broadoaks from their afternoon teas, as we always come to the Lake District and loved the beautiful house, the gorgeous grounds and picturesque valley it was situated in. We booked a meeting with the wedding team and were absolutely sold on the charm of the place. The rooms are individual and quirky but all have that comfy country vibe – and the bathrooms! Wow, we couldn’t wait for our family to stay in the hotel just to experience the huge jacuzzi baths! We booked our wedding for 22nd and 23rd of September, two days exclusive use, and were delighted when we learned that a rehearsal meal the night before was included for those staying. Throughout the whole planning process, Broadoaks’ team of wedding coordinators couldn’t have been more helpful. If we ever had a question they were just an email away, and very quick to reply. Even offering to have video calls to talk through any worries we may have had. There is a password protected ‘Weddings & Events Planning’ area on their website, which gives you all the relevant documents, room layouts, menu options, excel sheets and price breakdowns that you could possibly need which we found EXTREMELY helpful! As our day started coming together, the events planners became more and more involved to help us figure out the specifics and logistics, and by the end, I felt like we were in good hands! Special thanks to Jo, our wedding coordinator, Mel and Dan. They couldn’t have been more friendly and professional. The night before we all met together to go through the schedule, all our boxes of décor, special requests ect, and I was confident handing over the reins to a group of people so clearly passionate about what they do. Jo especially went out of her way to look after us, even staying well past her shift to watch our first dance! We felt like there was nothing this team couldn’t handle, and afterwards even found out that behind the scenes they was sorting out problems we didn’t even know existed at the time! Our wedding day itself was simply gorgeous. Everything came together like a dream, in no small part to Broadoaks team. I will say – if you’re not having live music, definitely have a practice with the sound system before the real thing, as we had a few technical difficulties! Also if the weather is good, expect wasps, but if you don’t like insects and wildlife then the Lake District isn’t for you haha! We had a full house with maximum day guests, but it never felt too crowded or like the staff were rushed off their feet. The food was great (thickest most tender beef I’ve ever had), the drinks were flowing, and everyone was complementing the gorgeous venue – there are no shortage of good backdrops for guests to take photos with too (the fountain and swing were a favourite)! We had many guests with dietary requirements, and all were catered for no problem; we even had one guest who wasn’t going to arrive until late into the wedding breakfast, and the kitchen team made sure his food would be fresh and warm for when he did make it. There was no request too big or small they couldn’t do for you. They even let us cut our wedding cake with a sword! All in all, we owe much of our happiness to Broadoaks. They played an instrumental role in fulfilling our dream wedding day! We simply can’t thank them enough for all their hard work; everyone from management, catering, housekeeping, events team and even the bloody gardener gives 110%. Thank you again, so so much, we can’t wait to come back and stay again for our first anniversary! Mr & Mrs Standish X
