Had a brilliant 3 night stay in August with my wife and hyperactive Bearded Collie. This is a great location for exploring the lakes and even though just off the A66, noise was never an issue. The White Horse Pub is adjacent to Scales Farm and offers decent food for those who want to stay closer to home. We had the smallest room (room 2), however it was very comfortable and we had a good nights sleep throughout our stay. The breakfast options were very good and and set us up for long days on the mountains. Helen and Ivan were perfect hosts and a fountain of knowledge regarding local attractions and walking routes. Very highly recommend.

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights in room 2. Covid precautions were explained on arrival and sanitiser is provided on entering and at breakfast. We were greeted with tea and lemon drizzle cake which was delicious 😋 A lovely little touch.
Ivan and Helen are extremely friendly and very good on local knowledge which is great. They make you feel at home immediately.
Nothing is too much trouble-they even booked us a table at the White Horse pub.
The room was immaculate and very comfortable and the farm is well located for Keswick, Windermere, Ambleside etc,.
We will definitely stay there again and would recommend it to anyone- it is a little gem 💎

I stayed for three nights with Molly the Collie in Room 1. Cosy, comfortable and clean with no windows as such but two "Velux" type roof lights which gave adequate natural light and the one above the bed offers a view of the stars, clouds permitting. The breakfasts were spot on and visitors need to leave the dog in the room at breakfast. The hosts are very accommodating and their lounge, which can be used by guests, has a very collection of maps and guidebooks for Lakeland visitors. The pub next door also welcomes dogs. Intermittent wi-fi in Room 1, but I didn't take my short holiday to stare at a small screen, so no complaints there. Lots of hot water for bath/shower and a small fridge with fresh milk and drinks. Walks up Blencathra, Souther Fell etc. can start from their back field, I even found my way to Latrigg from there on a wet morning.

My partner booked this place so that we could hike up Blen Cathra, which is perfectly located in close proximity behind the farmhouse. We were greeted on arrival with a cuppa and lemon drizzle cake, and our room was cosy and very clean. It is a super dog friendly place and our pooch enjoyed exercising in an enclosed field behind the farmhouse. We were very impressed by how covid secure our stay felt, the room was fogged prior to us going in, the hosts wore masks and they made sure everything was sanitised properly. We would certainly go back.

We have just spent two perfect days here and in the care of great hosts. Our communication beforehand was seamless and were able to pre order pack lunches which saved us loads of time. Our room was excellent in every way, spotless, spacious, very well appointed and I understand it’s a family room and I certainly wouldn’t hesitate if I had children as it had bunk beds as well if required. The breakfast room was airy and fresh and the full English breakfast perfect fuel before a mountain day. This place was a great find for us for future visits as its also ideal for our elderly mums so we will be back. Thanks so much for a great time.

We returned to Scales Farm for three nights in August and had a wonderful stay. Our hosts, Helen and Ivan, we’re the perfect blend of friendly, helpful and attentive, and provided delicious breakfasts. Our room was spacious with large, comfortable beds, and lots of thoughtful touches like a fridge with fresh milk and bottled water. We also appreciated the large fluffy towels - a rarity in guesthouses and hotels alike. Both bedroom and bathroom were beautifully clean. The pub next door serves great food, and there are lots of walks in the stunning Lake District on the doorstep or just a short drive away. Scales is a real gem.

+1
Booking
I booked this B&B based on the reviews (particularly the reviewer who said that the guest book was full of people coming back for the 3rd and 4th time) so I thought this looks like the place to stay.
Car or train
I debated whether to drive but Ivan and Helen offered to pick me up and drop me off from Penrith station 15 minutes away so I caught the train from London Euston.
My room
Fresh milk for my tea with a kettle, coffee and tea and biscuits, hot hot shower, hairdryer, and comfy bed. I had a large roof window so I did indeed watch the stars as recommended by another reviewer.
Breakfast
I don’t usually eat breakfast but I did have vegetarian sausages with a fried egg and lashings of hot tea. There are bird feeders at the window so you can watch a collection of birds landing whilst you eat your very tasty breakfast.
Guest sitting room
There is a guest sitting room full of maps, beautiful walking books and photos and it would be fab for a walking group to sit in there after a hard day out on the hill and drink wine
Pub next door
There is a pub next door and that’s where I had dinner every night, sitting at their open coal fire drinking red wine
Blencathra
I’d come up to the Lake District solo specifically to go up Blencathra as I’ve wanted to walk up it for 10 years and the mountain is behind the B&B. Ivan kindly agreed to walk up with me on the ‘easy’ Scales route as I’d get lost otherwise (Ivan is a fast walker) and I was near to tears when I got to the top that I had finally got there and that someone had taken 3 hours out of their busy day to make this dream come true. It was brilliant sunshine and the views were spectacular. On the way down, we stopped in the village tea hall to have a cup of tea and hot mince pie with Helen joining us with the car as that shortened the walk back (yep thoughtfulness overdrive!)
Overall
The reviews you read below are spot on. I haven’t met such genuinely nice people as Ivan and Helen. I wished I was staying here for Xmas and NY. I can see why people come back every year. Thank you both for a wonderful weekend!

We were welcomed with a cuppa and homemade ginger cake (which was truly delicious) in the beautiful original part of the farm house by Helen. Breakfast was personalised to meet my vegetarian requirements and served by the very friendly Ivan. The room was super clean and had everything we needed and more....including a fridge! The location is great, being just outside of Keswick, and parking is plentiful. Now we've found this place we will definitely be back! Thank you for a lovely stay.

We stayed here in late August with our 11 year old son in the very spacious room 4 and can honestly say it felt like home from home. Ivan and Helen are the perfect hosts and went out of their way to accommodate our every need. Would love to return when the weather is less wet!
