Stayed at Scales Farm over the May bank holiday weekend in the family room 4. Excellent spacious room which is very clean. There is a small fridge which is really useful and a great bunk bed space which my daughter loves. This was the second time we have stayed and will return again Helen and Ivan are such accommodating hosts very friendly and nothing is a bother just made the stay even more enjoyable.
We booked a last minute one night stay over the Easter weekend. The owners were very accommodating as usually there is a minimum 2 night stay but as we had other family staying longer they made an exception which we were grateful for. The guest house is just outside Keswick. It’s well equipped and nicely furnished. We were very well looked after and there was a good choice of breakfasts. Can’t fault our stay.
A delightful B&B in beautiful setting with extremely helpful host. Everything was well appointed with many lovely touches and lots of information provided. Superb breakfast, freshly cooked and all local ingredients with a splendid view of the garden and its birdlife.
Booking I booked this B&B based on the reviews (particularly the reviewer who said that the guest book was full of people coming back for the 3rd and 4th time) so I thought this looks like the place to stay. Car or train I debated whether to drive but Ivan and Helen offered to pick me up and drop me off from Penrith station 15 minutes away so I caught the train from London Euston. My room Fresh milk for my tea with a kettle, coffee and tea and biscuits, hot hot shower, hairdryer, and comfy bed. I had a large roof window so I did indeed watch the stars as recommended by another reviewer. Breakfast I don’t usually eat breakfast but I did have vegetarian sausages with a fried egg and lashings of hot tea. There are bird feeders at the window so you can watch a collection of birds landing whilst you eat your very tasty breakfast. Guest sitting room There is a guest sitting room full of maps, beautiful walking books and photos and it would be fab for a walking group to sit in there after a hard day out on the hill and drink wine Pub next door There is a pub next door and that’s where I had dinner every night, sitting at their open coal fire drinking red wine Blencathra I’d come up to the Lake District solo specifically to go up Blencathra as I’ve wanted to walk up it for 10 years and the mountain is behind the B&B. Ivan kindly agreed to walk up with me on the ‘easy’ Scales route as I’d get lost otherwise (Ivan is a fast walker) and I was near to tears when I got to the top that I had finally got there and that someone had taken 3 hours out of their busy day to make this dream come true. It was brilliant sunshine and the views were spectacular. On the way down, we stopped in the village tea hall to have a cup of tea and hot mince pie with Helen joining us with the car as that shortened the walk back (yep thoughtfulness overdrive!) Overall The reviews you read below are spot on. I haven’t met such genuinely nice people as Ivan and Helen. I wished I was staying here for Xmas and NY. I can see why people come back every year. Thank you both for a wonderful weekend! …
This is our 3rd visit to this dog friendly Oasis in the Hills You are assured of a warm and friendly welcome from Helen and Ivan who go more than the extra yard to be accommodating of special needs The place doesn’t do evening meals but there is an excellent pub next door The breakfasts though are something else with literally anything you want It won’t be our last visit as we have still not got up the Dodds!
