Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were extremely privileged to be the first guests renting a cottage after major works meant the cottages were closed. As four women ‘of a certain age’, comfort is very important to us and staying in the Wansfell Suite, with 4 bedrooms (each with its own bathroom which is most unusual in cottage hire or Airbnb) and very comfortable, 5 star hotel quality beds. Along with the usual towels, lovely bathrobes were provided which we were very pleased with! The communal kitchen and sitting room downstairs, with direct access to the gardens, provided us with plenty of room and comfortable chairs and sofas on which to lounge & natter while enjoying a morning coffee or evening glass of wine. We loved being able to enjoy the beautiful gardens and the meadow which when we were there were at peak purple crocus bloom. The facilities were spotless and we appreciated the small touches such as the ample washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, tea bags, jams and honey. It was wonderful to wake up to bird song and the babbling brook. As we didn’t have a car, we appreciated that the Hall is only a 12 minute walk via the path through the fields. We found the local taxis very easy to use at nighttime when we needed a lift back from dinner or the pub. We would highly recommend these beautiful and well looked after cottages for everyone wanting a base from which to explore Ulverston.

I’d recommend Swarthmoor Hall cottages as a comfortable base for exploring Ulverston and the surrounding area. I was there with a group of friends and we each had a comfortable bedroom with our own bathrooms. The communal kitchen and lounge were well-equipped and fine for a group of 4/5 people. Beds were comfortable ( two double/2 single) and the whole house was clean and warm with some breakfast items left for our arrival. It’s a very peaceful place and has a large garden area with space to park. As we didn’t have a car we walked to and from town during the day and booked cabs for our evening trips to local eateries. An interesting location with lots of local history

We had a wonderful time staying in the Old Hall. The accommodation nicely blends some of the beautiful features of the old building with modern touches and facilities. All the rooms are a good size and it is so peaceful. The gardens and surrounds are lovely, and it is really well positioned. Ulverston is a very pleasant market town (and the start of the Cumbria Way), and you are close to the coast and lakes. The staff were very helpful and kind. We would certainly recommend without hesitation.

This is is a real find.So much better than staying in hotels.Photos are totally accurate but you need to stay to experience the setting, the buildings and the peace. It will be even better in the Spring. Our room had a stunning view, was warm and cosy and was tastefully decorated.I wanted to go home and recreate it in my own house!

I really enjoyed my stay at Swarthmoor hall.
I thought the rooms had been recently renovated to a very high standard and were spotlessly clean with quality furnishings. Personally, I thought they were good value for money. (although no shower gel or shampoo which I would have expected)
Due to the nature of the place it did have a very quiet ambience, so would suit people looking for a quieter place to stay.
I am not so sure about the breakfast concept. We were there with two older teenagers, and for £7 each I think I could have bought food that was more interesting and delicious than what was provided. The help yourself style breakfast was eaten and cooked in a lovely, simple and classic style kitchen with a lounge next door. (We were there for two nights and did not see anyone else in the kitchen.) Perhaps others would consider using the new wonderful cafe, now on site, for breakfast instead.

Swarthmoor Hall, an Elizabethan manor house, is iconic as the former home of Margaret Fell and of Judge Thomas Fell, who protected the early generation of Quakers in the 17th century from the worst of persecution, and, after his death, as the operational headquarters of the fledgling Religious Society of Friends.

In addition to participating in workshops and courses there, it is possible to stay - either in the hall, or in nearby newer buildings - on a self-catering or bed and breakfast basis. Our group opted for self-catering. We had individual en-suite bedrooms and access to a large well-equipped kitchen and a multi-purpose meeting room in which we could eat. While the Hall, on the Furness peninsula, is a bit of a distance away from the heart of the Lake District, its facilities - the buildings, the garden and the intangible sense of history, make it well worth the travel. It is a couple of miles from a Booth's grocery store, and there are several pubs and restaurants nearby.

I strongly recommend it and hope to stay there again.

We loved the tranquility, but we also had great facilities in our suite. The accommodation and welcome were excellent, warm and informative. The Hall and gardens were lovely, and the housekeeping and breakfast were first class. Couldn't recommend it too highly.

Stayed here on business for 2 nights. It was peaceful and clean. My room had an iron which was useful. Love the lounge and kitchen. I had the breakfast basket which was great. I am staying again. My only criticisms are as follows: TV signal in lounge - awful. Room did not have a view - only of rubbish bins! Breakfast basket a little overpriced for what it was. You can hear guests come and go due to squeaky outside door. I stayed at £50 a night for a single room and would not pay more than that although I have seen higher charges. All in all I would still stay again if I got the right price though as I need to stay in the area on business and there are much, much worse places.

I stayed at Swarthmoor Hall with a group of friends who were all participating in a cycling event which started from Swarthmoor and I can honestly say it couldn't have been better. Staff were very helpful when we booked and with providing information before our stay and very welcoming on arrival. Some of us stayed in a separate, self -contained, semi detached house while others stayed in rooms in the main house. All the rooms were lovely and all the public areas beautifully presented. The accommodation was also extremely reasonably priced. We split the bill evenly and paid £33.50 each which we all thought was an absolute bargain)
It is important to realise though that Swarthmoor isn't a hotel so it isn't staffed the way a hotel would be. It is essentially a retreat centre that accepts other guests and the ambience is peaceful reflecting that. There is wifi but bedrooms aren't fitted with TVs although there are TVs in the sitting room. It does have a café open through the day but no restaurant, bar or room service and it is a short walk from the town centre.
We had a great stay at Swarthmoor. I hope to stay again some time and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone visiting the area..

I have no idea who the owners are aiming this service at. Cheap at under £40.00 but no Television in the room and a "long story" about Wifi (there isn't any) and a do-it-yourself breakfast (at £7.50 per head you would expect a lot more than a bread roll and boil it yourself egs) and no-one on site after 5.00pm and miles from anywhere it is not appealing to the business traveller, or anyone else for that matter. The whole "hotel" thing looks like a not very well thought through add-on to the main business
