Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Food has deteriorated since change of ownership. Tried different offerings on 3 separate occasions hoping they were just having an off day, but our experiences would suggest otherwise. Won’t be giving it a 4th try. The pub itself is lovely and the staff and landlady are lovely, but eating out is something of a luxury in these times so I expect the food to be good.

An appalling place to stay. It is unbelievable that such a shoddy, grubby and pokey room is offered without shame. We stayed in the room for 10 minutes and went home. Self- proclaimed claims of recent refurbishment are clearly misleading. I have stayed in a lot of of hotels/pubs and this is without doubt the worst by a country mile.

We stayed at the George and Dragon between Christmas and New Year 2023. Two couples in two double rooms. I would first of all like to comment on the pub downstairs. We could not fault it (maybe the early closing time in the evening). The staff were very friendly and the pub had a welcoming feeling. There were lots of beers, wines and spirits to choose from. On our first nights stay we ate in the pub and the food was fabulous - fresh, hot and tasty. Between us we chose the fish and chips, curry and the chilli and I have got to say there were no complaints. Complements to the Chef! The accommodation however was a different story. We booked through Booking.com with payment on arrival. I paid our £150 by card for our room and my sister was charged only £130 (for the double room next to ours). When I asked why theirs was cheaper I was told that £130 was the cash price. Had I have know this I would obviously had paid cash. The rooms were quite small and cramped, none of the furniture matched and the carpet and walls were to say the least, grubby with damp marks on the wallpaper. There was a mirror on the wall but it was behind the TV. The bathroom, although you could tell had been cleaned, was very old and dated with a dirty looking lino and black mould marks in the shower cubicle. Another couple of things about the room were the lack of a hairdryer, although on the website it says each room has a hairdryer I had to go (with wet hair) looking for someone to ask. The cleaner did find one for me for which I was grateful. Also the signal on the TV was a problem and we were unable to watch it without it breaking up/buffering. In my sisters room the headboard fell off as she got into bed and she slipped on the toilet seat as it was loose. I suppose it depends on your standards but we will not be returning, the whole accommodation side needs a complete refurbishment to bring it up to spec. It was such a shame that we found all these issues as the George and Dragon is a great place to explore Ashbourne and the surrounding areas.

Had a lunchtime meal at this friendly pub. The food was excellent and really good value for money. Large portions, certainly didn't need the chips, although they were excellent. I would have no hesitation staying there if staying in Ashbourne.

We stayed for the night with our dog and were made really welcome, and the room was very comfortable. On the back of that visit, and as we only live 20mins away, we keep coming back for their food and drink. The food is great, and the Sunday roast we had the other week was insane! Loads of lovely food. We’ve also been really impressed by the staff, who have proved themselves to be a lovely bunch, extremely polite and attentive. See you again soon!

Nice quiet room. Very friendly staff. Ideal base for exploring Ashbourne. We ate in the hotel on the first night and had a nice enjoyable meal (Calazone was superb) There was a good range of well kept real Ales, I conducted a comprehensive survey of them! 24h Council parking within a couple of minutes walk.

Was recommended GnD by someone from Ashbourne. The atmosphere was , in fairness, very nice and clearly a local crowd and the service was very good. Maybe we should have stuck to a few drinks, however decided to have dinner. Antipasto starter was boring and sincerely out of a packet whilst the spare ribs were like Jerky and covered with a tasteless runny sauce. They were terrible. Due to the great service and atmosphere I have to give them the benefit of doubt that it was a one off bad meal.

Nice little base for Ashbourne and Staff/Derbys southern Peak District, it is good value for money and had a great nights sleep (Room 2 nice mattress). Practical not luxurious , no breakfast available and shower warm not hot. Pub downstairs ok and serves decent meals.
