We have recently renovated our 1860's former Coach House and 2 dog friendly self catering barns which are romantic for 2 and can sleep up to 4. We very much appreciate that we have been awarded 2 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Awards for 2018 and 2019, 3 TripAdvisor Travellers Choice Award for 2020, 2021 and 2022 and a 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 Good Hotel Award. We have also been awarded the Rural Accommodation of the Year 2020/21 and 2021/22. Our self catering barns have received great reviews over the years and many guests enjoy our large, dog friendly field with views of Peveril Castle, Mam Tor, Back Tor and Lose Hill where you can relax and unwind. We are set in an acre of gardens and meadows in the heart of Castleton with private parking directly opposite the barns.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had a brilliant stay at the Stable. It was big enough for 2 adults, 1 8yo and a large dog. It had everything we needed for our short stay, including car parking. Our hosts had excellent suggestions for local attractions and places to eat/shop. We would recommend this place for anyone looking for a base to hike or explore the area.

Speedwell House is an ideal location in castleton. It is clean and tidy , and very quiet. The gardens and outside seating areas are well kept and ideal if the weather is fine. It's only a couple of minutes from the centre and within easy reach of the caverns.

We had a great weekend staying at Speedwell Stable. It's obvious that a lot of thought and attention has been put into making the stable the perfect place to stay. It was really well equipped, comfortable and super clean. The cake was a lovely surprise! There's a huge, enclosed garden which was great for our dog to run around in. It's only a couple of minutes walk to the centre of Castleton where there's a good range of pubs, shops and cafés and there are walks right on the doorstep too. Mark, Hilary and Dexter couldn't have made us feel more welcome and it's easy to see why people choose to return. We definitely will be!

The barn is really well laid out with a toilet on both floors. All the facilities you could need including a breakfast bar which we used every day. Very cosy but cool when we stayed on a hot weekend. Excellent location set in the owners grounds.

What a wonderful gem of a place to stay. Absolutely fantastic hosts who really have created a very safe, dog friendly haven. The barn has access to a fabulous outdoor area with stunning views. We had a very relaxing week full of great walks in a beautiful part of the Peaks. Castleton has a lot to offer with many places to eat and drink. Speedwell Barns is a special place to stay and we will be recommending to all our friends, especially those with dogs.

This was the second time we have stayed at Speedwell Barn, one of the two converted to the rear of the main house. The location is absolutely perfect, right on the edge of Castleton village which has plentiful pubs, cafes and small shops, all within a short walk. It is a perfect base for walking with Mam Tor and the Great Ridge nearby and visible from the extensive garden. On both occasions we have parked our car on arrival and not returned to it until departure time! The off road parking also being a bonus. The caves are all within walking distance and we took in a concert at the Peak Cavern aka ‘Devils Arse’, the main reason for our second visit. Mark and Hilary are great hosts, happy to chat or just leave you to your own devices. The accommodation has all that you would need for a short break. Comfortable and spotlessly clean and very difficult to find any fault. It is hard to know where to stop with all the plus points! Another great short break, thankfully help by the weather - would definitely book again and again.
