Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Such great value for money. A huge camping field with plenty of space. Great self-catering facilities, which made the trip affordable and fun. Brilliant all you can eat breakfast, and other food options looked good too. Excellent location, great walks and the village has some nice shops and cafes.

Thank you for reviewing the hostel. We're very pleased you enjoyed your camping trip to us. The camping is pretty affordably priced; it is helpful to have access to all the shared facilities, self catering kitchen / option to buy meals and drinks at the hostel as well. We are well located for access to pubs, cafes and restaurants in the local area, along with sightseeing and other attractions. Overall, the flexibility for camping guests is decent, and we're happy to see it's proving popular this year! We hope to welcome you back for some more adventures in the future.

Beautiful setting. Friendly and helpful staff. Clean room with en-suite. Generous portions for breakfasts and the evening meals were wholesome with a good variety of choices full of flavour. We visited Peveril Castle and Blue John Caves during our stay.

Stayed in the mews. Great location, a beautiful building and great kitchen facilities but the bedroom I stayed in wasn't clean and rough around the edges. It's also a room adapted for people with disabilities and had a large 'safety'light which glowed green all night and was positioned right above my top bunk which was not conducive to a good night's sleep. It wouldn't take much to improve it.

Great campsite. Lovely hot showers and the washing up facilities were good. Immaculately clean. Thanks for the lovely brass band entertainment. Ideally located under Lose Hill. Will definitely be back to explore more of the area.

Thank you for giving us a review. We're very pleased to hear that you had a lovely time camping with us over the weekend! The toilets, showers and washing up area for our camping guests are relatively new; we're happy that you liked the cleanliness and the location as well. There's a lot of lovely walking, running and cycling possible in the local area (we have a variety of recommended routes for guests to enjoy, that start and end at the hostel). We look forward to welcoming you back for another stay with us in the future.

We stayed there for 1 night with the tent. The place for camping is basically a massive sheep toilet. I believe it wouldn't be hard to create a fenced area solely for campers without the sheep poo everywhere. We did forgot our tea at home and asked the gentleman at the reception if they could spare us a bag of tea but they said they cant give us just like that but we can buy a tea for a lovely price of 2.50£. So much for service and helpfulness of the staff. I guess the whole organization would get bankrupt over a bag of tea. On top of that we got 2 parking charges (60£) for parking in the car park. Nice. Not recommending

Thank you for leaving us a review. We're sorry that you didn't have a great experience when you stayed with us recently. The hostel has an agreement with local farmers, where their sheep can roam and graze anywhere on our fields. We're sorry to hear that there was a lot of sheep poo in the field whilst you were camping. The car parking is administered by a separate company from the YHA, but our staff can ensure that the parking charges are dropped for you. Parking is free for our guests; our apologies that fines have been issued for your vehicle(s). If you have not yet paid the fines, please get in touch with the hostel as soon as you are able (email: castleton@yha.org.uk) - let us know the vehicle registration plate, and we will make sure that the fines are cancelled. We hope that you would consider staying with us, or at another YHA property, in the future.

We camp on the field which was absolutely covered in sheep crap, and I mean covered, we did manage to find some grass, after a bit of a flick with a stick. This needs to be highlighted on the website. It was very disappointing, but apart from that otherwise ok.

Thank you for leaving us a review. The field where our camping guests can set up their tents is one where sheep roam freely. The hostel has an arrangement with local farmers where their sheep can roam around freely and graze on our lawns. We're sorry to hear that there were a lot of sheep droppings at the point when you were camping with us. We're happy to hear you enjoyed the rest of your stay, and we hope to welcome you back at some point in the future.

We had a lovely stay in one of the three Landpods. We weren’t entirely sure what to expect but found the pod very comfortable and practical - solar lighting and phone charging (via a USB port) was very convenient. We wondered why we were provided with chess pieces but no board until we discovered the hidden table! Plenty of storage space. Loved that wood for the fire pit was included. Beds were very comfortable with thick duvets provided. The landpods were situated a couple of minutes walk from the hostel in a beautiful peaceful meadow (though the surrounding long grass was a bit challenging for us hayfever sufferers!). I’m not sure if the facilities have changed recently (based on previous reviews which mention separate showers for each pod - maybe a covid measure?) . We had access to 1x toilet and 1x shower shared with the 3 pods (these were kept clean and shower was hot). We also had access to a small but very serviceable kitchen in the stone barn on same field a few metres from the landpods - including crockery, oven, microwave, kettle etc. This building is set up for use as a camping barn so I don’t know if it is always available to Landpod guests, however it was very convenient and saved us a trip to the main building to use the (large) kitchen there. Because we were pretty self-sufficient using the facilities in the camping barn we didn’t make much use of the main hostel building but it was good to know it was there had we wanted more indoor space.

Thank you for taking the time to review our hostel. We're pleased to hear that you had a great time in the landpod recently! The pods have recently ish been extended, to provide more space and improved facilities within them. At the moment, the camping barn (in the same field as the pods) provides the shower, toilet and kitchen / lounge area for the pods; we do not have the pods and the barn on sale at the same time. Guests can use the facilities in the ground floor of the main building whilst camping or using the pods, although this does represent quite a long walk from the pod field! Previously, when the pods were in use a couple of years ago, we had separate portable shower facilities, and some portable toilets, for the pod users (this was a Covid measure). In the future, we intend to convert the barn completely into toilets and showers for the pod field, as well as add some bell tents to the field. This is likely to not happen before 2024, however. We hope to welcome you back for another stay at the hostel (in a pod, or camping, or inside accommodation!) at some point in the future.

Came here for a 4 days before Christmas for hiking caving and general mischief in the area because the shortest days of the year are definitely the best for those long outdoor daytime experiences followed by general owl watching in the long nights that follow... For the price paid (£28 per night for double ensuite) cannot complain. Being frank the normal price is a bit of a rip and not sure who the target audience is meant to be as there are many more favourable self contained options in the area for a similar price, but I guess you don't get to say you stayed in a yha, which I suppose is important to some, *cough* people.. Hostel was fine, facilities and staff great no issues, they even took our morrisons delivery in. Yay to supporting the local economy (don't worry I bought some eggs for £1.20 from the farm down the road) Not sure who the demographic of a yha is meant to be but during our 4 days the other guests consisted of some mainly hippy hooray rahs and general weirdos and some religious type trying to convert my partner in the kitchen while cooking dinner - wtf. It is stately enough inside with heating on full blast in the communal areas even when empty, does this promote the environmental angle the hostel is presumably trying to align to, no idea. It has apparently been recently refurbished, unfortunately this was lost one me as I had no idea what parts have been refurbished and what parts were as they were, perhaps they could a provide a leaflet about that. In short it was a nice budget break for the price paid especially in an expensive area of the peaks but the experience makes me remember why I stay in self contained accom, or even better get the trangia and tent out in a moor about 5000 miles from anyone else and not have to listen to some kids parping on the trombone for half the night "because we are expressing our inner self"

Thank you for leaving us a review. We are pleased that you had a good time when you stayed with us (and that the accommodation was good value for money). Our staff do as much as possible to ensure everyone has a good time when they stay with us. All guests are welcome to stay at the YHA (regardless of background); the organisation is apolitical and areligious, so I am unsure about what happened in the self catering kitchen. Our apologies if you received an unusual experience from some of our other guests during your usage of shared facilities. We hope to welcome you back for another stay in the future.
