Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Warm welcome. Great atmosphere. Spotlessly clean, very friendly staff who show a genuine interest in their customers. Nothing is too much trouble. Stayed several times and will continue to do so. Breakfast is top class, beds very comfortable.

Booked in advance for a pub meal at what was described as a dog friendly establishment. No water offered, so already not that dog friendly. We were nicely greeted, our table wasn't ready, but we used a smaller one as our numbers had reduced. Table not clean, there was residue from previous diners strewn underneath also. Very cramped too; very close to the table behind us. They'd said they were short staffed, so no table service etc, but we let it go. That happens - we gave them the benefit for that Bar guy kindly guided me to a local ale when I ordered food .... All good. Food arrived with some delay over what expected, in total 45 mins wait just for burgers. One meal arrived and was wrong. It was then taken away and re-plated with less ingredients to make the smaller burger that was ordered. My daughter's Veggie Burger bun was like rock. ... not able to eat ... re-plated that too (I.e. put the same bitten burger onto a new bun) .. took too long though .. so ended up eating alone as we had already finished our own food. 3 bottles of empty Mayo provided before we corks serve some Final meal was a Fiery Jack burger- the least "Fiery" I'd ever tasted. Chips for all 3 meals were underdone, small portions and fairly tasteless. Ordered sausages for the 3 little dogs as a treat.... £6 for 3 sausages... burnt and greasy. One dog (wrongly, accepted) popped its paw on the table to have some sausage right at the end of the meal as a treat (been asleep to that point on the chair as floor too dirty to let lie there ... truly awful) One staff member (looked miserable all night - unlike the rest of the team) spotted this and took the opportunity to speak very loudly across the room at this situation - Not dealing with it quietly and professionally as it should have been. So, I did the same on payment to him: reflecting that HIS level of service was as disgusting as he'd eluded my dog to have been at the particular second he walked by. She'd not had a paw on the table at any other stage during the evening So. Not a dog friendly place Chaotic ordering and re-plating At best ... very average food Try other places... there are plenty.

We stayed one night after attending a concert in the Devils Arse cavern. Which was great I might add. Very tired looking room and entrance to it. The stair rail felt sticky leading to the rooms. Walking through the pub I didn't hold much hope out for the room. Although some furniture was antique in syle it just had a very dated grubby feel. The drapes looked dusty at the windows. The bed and pillows where uncomfortable. The settee was virtually on the floor. The bed linen was spotlessly white as where the towels. Nice touches of wine and water, tea and coffee. Complimentary toiletries. The bathroom was clean and large. The drain must have been blocked because the shower in the bath was taking an age to empty, as was the sink. The radiator in the bathroom wouldn't turn off and as a result had to sleep with all the windows open. Breakfast was accetable but very simple. The full english was sparse, but just ok. Again the tables felt sticky. The overhaul impression was one of needing a deep clean in the pub and restaurant. The lady in the breakfast room was friendly and lovely. The rest of the staff weren't attentive. When I handed the key back in there was no 'have you had a nice stay ?' etc. I told staff about the drains but got a feeling nothing would be done. All in all I thought for the price we payed (£110) for the night we would have expected better.

Very, very, very tired regarding decor above ground floor. Stair and landing carpets on first floor and above, were dirty. Our room had cobwebs in many areas, particularly around windows. Curtain tieback hooks pulled out of walls. Taps loose in bathroom. So, in summary, we were extremely disappointed with the accommodation. In agreement with many reviews, the dining room staff and food were excellent and should be commended.

Stayed in the Derwent room, nice size. Bed little to small for two adults. Bathroom was to warm, because to the radiator that wouldn’t go off. No safety box. Staff Linda at breakfast was amazing and give our stay that little extra! Pizzas was amazing and the beers tasted very good! If you like to here the church bells ranging all day you would love it!

Two couples booked into two rooms for a three night stay. The bar & restaurant staff were excellent along with the breakfast staff. Caroline in particular was very helpful. The food couldn’t be faulted, also. The issue we had was the bedroom, named Rivelin, and in particular it’s cleanliness. The bed wasn’t very comfortable &, as it was at the front of the building with a single glazed window, it started to get noisy as soon as it became light. Farmers tractors, motorcycles & dustbin wagons, to name a few, could be heard accelerating away from the sharp bend the hotel is situated on. I would suggest asking for a rear room. The room itself was very dated and, to be blunt, quite grubby. The cleaners obviously didn’t clean in the corners, in the open-fronted wardrobe, under the desk or around the bedside cupboards. We found items in several places which weren’t large but shouldn’t have been there. The vacuum cleaner left an area at the base of the skirting board which had thick dust, as did the rest of the bedroom. Lazy housekeeping. The bathroom was no better. Behind the toilet was dirty and the grouting very mouldy in places, with black patches around the shower area. The towels were big bath size and the courtesy tray was excellent, with a small bottle of wine, biscuits & the usual tea, coffee etc. It’s such a shame that the grubby room let the place down.

After walking at Mam Tor and I popped into the Nags Head for a meal and drinks with my partner. We both really enjoyed the experience, really appreciating the fish and chips and the beer and wine on offer. Great service from the staff and a nice atmosphere in the pub. Well worth a visit if you are passing through the area.

This place is amazing. A real gem. Matt and the team are so accommodating. Try the food from the specials board! We had rack of lamb. Best lamb I have ever eaten. Breakfasts are always value for money and served in the lovely restaurant. Great choice and super friendly staff. If you want a break in Peak. This is the place.

Having had a busy day we ended up here for dinner. The fire was roaring and the atmosphere was welcoming. All the staff were polite and friendly. Our food order arrived quickly and was amazing. Hot, tasty and plentiful. The beer was good too! Well worth a visit.

I have eaten here twice in the past month. On both occasions, the food was great and freshly cooked. The table service on both occasions was from Charlotte, and again excellent. My most recent visit however; was marred by some grumpy old blonde woman whom seems to be in a hurry to empty the Restaraunt. She firstly, attempted to clear our starters from the table whilst we were still eating them. Upon delivery of the main course, she began to noisily move furniture around while people were eating their meals. Finally, she went around the room with a plastic dustpan and brush, noisily sweeping the floor around patrons legs as they ate !! One of our party had not finished eating, and the old blonde woman stood scowling at her because she wanted us out of there. Clearly, this woman was wanting to prepare the room for Breakfast, and wanted rid of everyone so that she could do so, then get off home. I'm a local bloke. I would not recommend Ye Olde Nags Head just on the basis of this rude woman and her behaviour. There are plenty of other places to eat at within Castleton and the Hope Valley. Fire her, she is letting you all down.
