The staff at The Scotsmans Pack are an interesting bunch, ranging from the dour but efficient one, the inquisitive one who seemed to have at least half an eye peaking over the shoulder, to the lively one who couldn't be more helpful and informative, even if the information given wasn't always entirely accurate. I also encountered colourful guests, some not afraid to speak their mind to all who might listen and some not afraid to wander around shoeless. I think characters add character and in that respect the Scotsman seemed to provide some side entertainment.

I found the service overall to be good. The beer was excellent and the food very acceptable, the breakfast was comprehensive in that all tastes were catered for and the selection, when all items were available, went on forever. The bar itself is a comfortable place to relax.

The rooms were a slightly different story and I found the cleanliness a little lacking, particularly in the bathroom. A scrubbing brush and some bleach would remove at least some of the mould in the shower! However the room was tidy and served it's purpose.

Hathersage is in a wonderful location so The Scotsman does have a bit of a captive audience. It's reasonably priced and did the job for me. I would return . . . . . . . . even if it's just for the sideshow.

Visited after a long walk in the country with my mum and our two dogs. Such a warm, friendly welcome from our server Mark. Excellent, effective COVID safety measures and precautions in place. Food was really excellent. We were blown away that the team (which were seriously reduced in numbers) were able to maintain such quality in terms of the food and service. Mark appeared to be serving the entire pub on his own and was doing a remarkable job, so welcoming, efficient and professional. Attention to detail had been maintained; dog bowls full, dog treats filled up, tables cleared and cleaned quickly and attentive service for the duration of our visit... EXCELLENT!! Thank you to the SP team for a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.

On arrival, you enter a cosy country pub with someone welcoming you almost immediately. We were quickly checked in and given room 1, a room with a huge four post bed kitted out with glass bottled water, biscuits, lots of tea and coffee and even a bakewell pudding.
We had a wonderful meal on our first night in the pub. On the second day we found that on the little welcome flyer in the rooms, there are some vouchers for the pubs partner shops, cafes and pubs. We found the Robin Hood in Baslow and had a lovely meal there too.
Breakfast was also lovely with lots of choice, though they are- like everyone- being impacted by supply issues.

All in all a wonderful stay with lovely staff who do everything humanly possible to make it amazing, helped by a beautiful setting and lots of walks nearby.

Booked a table for two for evening meal at 7pm.Arrived 10 minutes early and were first seated at one table and then asked to move to another one.Only a very minor problem and we were in good location near to the bar and we were clearly visible to the two members of Staff working there.
Went to the Bar to order drinks and asked the Lady if we needed to order food at the bar and was advised that it was a table service and she would come over to us.
The Lady in question was obviously very busy and we appreciated that we had to be patient during this difficult period caused by the Pandemic.
Waited for nearly half an hour and then a large group of 9 people arrived and were seated at two tables just in front of us.
After a period of time,Lady went over to them and proceeded to take their drinks and food order.
At this point we had had enough of waiting and walked out.My friend, who was polite at all times, told the Lady that we had already been in the pub for over half an hour and we were not happy that she had taken orders for the party of 9 and completely ignored us.
To be fair, she did apologise but I felt she had no excuse as we were clearly visible to her throughout our stay and not tucked away somewhere in a quiet corner of the pub.
There was only one other person serving behind the bar and the Staff appeared to be under severe pressure with their workload.
The owners clearly need to look at their Staffing levels and to recruit sufficient numbers to ensure a much improved level of service.
So,over half an hour of waiting only to be completely ignored and I can’t help but wonder how long it would have taken for the food to be served up.
During our short stay in the area we had excellent service at many other Pubs but unfortunately our visit to this establishment was a great disappointment and we won’t be visiting again.
Fortunately, the takeaway Fish and Chip shop in the village was open and so we didn’t starve!

Firstly can I apologise and thank you for letting us know. I am truly sorry that you didn't receive the service that we strive for. This issue has been addressed with the staff and it isn't always easy to staff accordingly as it is very uncertain times. These comments have been taken on board and we hope that you will try us again in the near future.

A group of us go walking in, or around, the Peak District every Tuesday. We nearly always have lunch in a Cafe or Pub so after three years we have visited many such establishments and can spot good value for money and quality.

Visited this pub last Tuesday and found it to be a pleasant looking pub however the welcome was far from friendly and for the quality of food served, very expensive.
On a positive note, the beer was good quality and the food was piping hot....... but that was about it. Quality of the food was under whelming and way over priced.

Watch out because the soft drinks must be hugely expensive..... probably as much as a pint! Three pints of Jennings Cumberland, two pints of coke and a mediocre fish pie (£13) came to nearly £31.

Although the notices outside say that they welcome muddy boots, that wasn't really our experience. We removed our boots at the door but felt that walkers really aren't encouraged. In fact the lady who served us didn't really seem welcoming to anyone.....maybe she was having a bad day!

Still I guess that they they really don't care about how customers feel because the business mainly seems to rely on visitors to the Peak and that audience constantly changes.

Pub is definitely off our register!

Will visit the refurbished Little John at the other end of the town next time.

Firstly thank you for taking the time to leave your comments about your visit. I can only apologise for how you feel about the welcome that you revived and the quality of food that you had. I have taken note of all the notes that you have made and fed this through the team as this is not our normal standard of food or service. We do welcome all here at the Scotsmans Pack from, locals to walkers and families. I apologise again if you were not happy with our warm welcome and we do hope that we can welcome you again in the future.

I have always understood that this establishment had a very good reputation. We have attempted a visit several times over the past few years but the parking has always proven to be impossible and we have given up.However, my son booked a meal for his family, me and my husband for today, as a first post lock-down meal out together. The parking nearly scuppered us, once again, but at the 11th hour we managed to find two spaces a little way up the road. So we finally managed to make that visit. Sadly, the whole experience was well below the standard that we had expected. We were seated outside, under cover and the sun was shining in. It could have been very pleasant but the table that the six of us were seated at, was only big enough for four and the bench seat was the narrowest I have ever come across. The children kept slipping off and the adults were very uncomfortable. I ordered the loin of pork from the Sunday menu. Unfortunately, it was mostly fat (as was my son's portion). The vegetables were almost uniformly rock hard and inedible for me. The roast potatoes looked as if they had been heated up from a batch of only just cooked potatoes. The yorkshire pudding was fine! The staff were obviously very busy and it took us a while to catch someone's attention just to request some mustard and apple sauce. We were presented with these, although the apple sauce looked like an after thought. A few chunks of apple in a small pot. Hardly enough for two people. Just a little thing but it demonstrates a certain indifference and lack of care. The other meals were equally unexciting (beef, gammon). In summary, I can only say that it was like eating a very mediocre canteen meal. So for £17, I ate three potatoes, a yorkshire pudding, a couple of tiny mouthfulls of pork and a small piece of cauliflower. We were going to order dessert but we decided that if they were of the same quality as the main course, we would give it a miss. If I had been asked how the meal was, I would have mentioned our disappointment but no such question was forthcoming.......I couldn't be bothered to push the point. Needless to say, that was our first and last trip to this establishment.

My first trip to Hathersage and I was staying over night on a Saturday night on my own. After spending all day in the hills and getting pretty cold and wet, the welcome at The Scotsman's Pack was warm and friendly. As a woman on my own it can be daunting sometimes but the staff could not have been nicer. On my arrival they were just putting the most gorgeous looking chocolate cake out. I managed to resist as I was badly in need of a hot bath (and boy was it hot) but then when I found the Bakewell Pudding next to the kettle in my room, well, resistance was futile!

Breakfast was wonderful and to finish it all off I was sent away with a fantastic packed lunch: huge sandwiches on really tasty bread, a packet of crisps, a chocolate brownie and an apple.

Thank you to everyone. I would definitely recommend this great pub for a lovely stay.

Fantastic lunchtime meal and the service was brilliant. The pub is dog friendly but dogs are only allowed in the back room so booking ahead is advisable. We were made to feel very welcomed and between Ang and the chef they even accommodated our awkward dietary dessert requests.

Last year we went to the Scotsmanpack for dinner and then this year, for my partners birthday we stayed for 2 nights. Beautiful cosy rooms, delicious food, perfect location for walks and friendly, helpful staff.
The food was all homemade and locally sourced and it was great to find a yummy bakewell pudding in our room waiting for us on arrival.
Make sure you try their delicious desserts or cakes that are on the stand, as they are out of this world.
We will definitely be looking to stay again!

stayed 3 nights 8-10 april, was alone but had comfortable and well decorated single room, felt like home from home, safe and relaxed. Housekeeper Robert was very welcoming, made sure i had everything i needed. He was very approachable, i felt i could ask for anything i needed. as it happened it was all there. ensuite shower, toiletries and fluffy towels. perfect temperature in the room, comfy bed. i was above the bar and restaurant but couldnt hear noise.
i had breakfast at the pub which was lovely, Robert made me a good coffee and im a bit of a coffee snob so it made my day, and the menu changed while i was there so i had a good choice. table to myself, lots of room. nice clean dining area in pub.
safe car park right outside pub. great village with basic co-op. and lots of coffee shops, cafes and restaurants. lots of walks right from the pub.
i will be going again it was so nice.
