Me and husband stayed here over the weekend to celebrate his birthday. The minute we walked through the door we felt so welcomed by the staff, we arrived quite early so our room wasn't ready but we had a nice drink in the cosy bar area while we waited.

Once we were able to check in we felt blown away by how nice the room was for a budget room (number 25) we think it had been newly renovated as it was very modern and stylish, I particularly liked the shower as it was very relaxing.

Later that night we had a meal at the hotel and I couldn't fault it at all, the staff couldn't do more for us, they even made a special birthday cocktail for my husband when I told them it was his birthday.

Breakfast the next morning was great, I've noticed a few other reviews of people saying that the service was slow but for us it was very quick.

A final point I would like to add is the hotel does have a private car park, I felt very safe leaving my car there over night as it has a barrier so that was a huge bonus.

Stayed for two nights over a hot, sunny bank holiday weekend just as lockdown restrictions were easing so the hotel and area were very busy. First the good points - plenty of car parking spaces. The hotel are managing Covid 19 difficulties well by providing hand sanitiser at the entrance, and other key points, physical distancing, sanitised keys etc. Bar, lounge etc beautifully decorated. I had a single room which was clean and had nearly everything I needed. Wifi was a bit iffy in my room, but this is an old stone building in the Peak District. On check in, I asked what time food was served until and I was informed last orders was at 8.30 pm. I was not advised of the need to book or that it was only restaurant (fine dining) in the evening. Outside, the hotel offers bar lounge food, grazing snacks etc. When I went down at around 7.00pm, I was told that I could not eat as the restaurant was fully booked and that was the only food on offer. The bar was table service only, (another C19 measure) and I was quickly offered a drink. I asked to sit outside in the courtyard as it was such a lovely evening. The friendly waitress showed me outside and brought my drink. It seems the table service did not extend to the courtyard after that as no staff came to see if I wanted a refill. This didn't bother me too much. I returned to the bar lounge and took a seat but waited half an hour before I got served again and then only when I asked a waitress who was clearing a nearby table. To be fair, the restaurant was really busy and I think it was just part of the transition between being closed for so long to getting up to full speed. On the second evening, I again took my drink outside but on this evening, a really lovely waitress called Katie/Katy did come to see if I required a second drink. There was no hairdryer in my room. I left a note for housekeeping asking for one and then mentioned it to the receptionist on my way out. When I returned later in the day, housekeeping had not been to my room, (I'm guessing another C19 measure which I didn't mind), but still no hairdryer. When I went back to reception, one was provided very quickly. Breakfast was good with friendly staff serving both days. Some fresh fruit would have been nice but otherwise good. Overall, this was a good hotel and I enjoyed staying there. Very well situated and the car park is very much a positive. As I pointed out, this was a very busy weekend and the hotel and all its service providers are transitioning back into full operation. I would stay there again.

Stayed here on a Groupon deal on a bed breakfast and 3 course evening meal deal and wow what good value. The hotel is lovely ,the staff go out of there way to make sure you want for nothing. The room was spacious with a big comfy bed ,and large bath, the 3 course meal was excellent ,homemade carrot ,parsnip and red onion soup with warm cobs for starters, fish chips and mushy peas for main( you had 3 different options) and cheese cake and ice cream for dessert all beautiful! Went up to the Scotsman pack at night as they had a quiz and bingo on.,Next morning the breakfast was plentiful ,assortments of cereals and fruits and juices followed by full English ,think we put a few pounds on whilst there!!! If you want a lovely comfortable hotel with lovely friendly attentive staff, excellent food ,this is the place you won't be disappointed

Not a slick service overall, lovely building and lovely village.
Everything seems a little too much effort for the staff and no real or intended customer focus from our experience, for example, Booked dinner prior to arrival as part of package but when we arrived they didn’t have our booking or make any apology for it not being in their diary.
Prices are great for a 1 night break with dinner, although 1 night is prob all you will want
WiFi is non existent in the hotel and no service at all on the ground floor.
The Room we were in was on the ground floor / underground and clearly smelt of damp. The Room was very big but basic and needs work e.g Window sill bowed and rotting underneath, ill fitting carpets, Bathroom needs tidying although shower is most powerful I’ve ever experienced.....it’s the attention to detail that’s required in the room though.
When we arrived it was very hot but our Fan was broken, but reception did put a replacement in the room whilst we were out, again attention to detail. I asked for a Iron and only a iron provided, normally a ironing board is helpful too.
Food is basic which they have tried to pimp up but it wasn’t good at all. Service appalling at dinner, lots of forgetting and lots of chasing needed. However it was excellent service and food at breakfast, very inconsistent. Someone in the restaurant at dinner said the chef was a genius. Certainly is, only person I know that can cook all flavour out of a duck leg whilst keeping it moist. Pickled pineapple is interesting with the Gammon, pickled with sambuca is what it tasted like
Lots of staff seem to be wandering around aimlessly
Drinks are good and lots of choice
Covid set up very mixed. Hand gels around which is pretty standard but mix of staff wearing or not wearing PPE.
I would say the big things this hotel can improve on are food quality and service. However, breakfast was excellent and some really nice choices with good service so perhaps it’s a staff thing at night ?
No electric plugs by bed, many hotels seem to have this set up and need to think about the room configurations
Bed was interesting. Angled downward. So either had to sleep with several pillows to ensure your head wasn’t below any other body part or have all your blood run to your head and maybe die and not wake up in the morning. Bed was very poor to be honest and not comfortable, seemed to be broken and mattress sagging in the middle
And of course being on the ground floor you have the joy of hearing the march of the elephants every 5 seconds.... not sure anyone needs to move around as much as the people staying above us, maybe they were looking for the duck flavour.

We enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea for 3 adults & 2 toddlers.

We were accommodated the same day of booking which was a huge bonus given that most places request 24 hours notice.

Brilliant service from the front of house team who really did accommodate the 2 toddlers that were with us, including bringing them fresh fruit upon arrival.

The afternoon tea was very nice and it was apparent that high quality ingredients had been used, the perfect size portions and very good value. 3 different sandwich selections, mini scones & cream and 3 different cakes & treats.

I would 100% recommend the George Hotel for an enjoyable afternoon tea treat, we will be back! Such a treat & lovely surroundings too.

I’m a bit torn about this review, as the staff and hotel was overall lovely. The staff did seem a bit on edge and some of them seem very young and inexperienced. Masks were worn and all correctly. Hand sanitiser was provided on entering.

The room was good, although some mould in the bathroom which indicates not being cleaned properly after each guest. Bleach will get rid of mould if cleaning is to a high standard. We had a big gap at the bottom of our door, which shined constant light through so had to put towels down to cover this.

Evening meal and breakfast was lovely, the food quality is very good and any issues got changed, no problem.

As I say, staff seemed on edge and I think it was due to bad reviews concerning covid. Staff need to relax as they’re doing a great job to ensure guests are happy and comfortable.

My husband and I visited The George Hotel after its refurbishment and I can honestly say we were blown away by not only the breathtaking environment but the service and food was fantastic.
When we first walked in I was taken back by how warm and friendly it was. The staff greeted us and nothing was too much trouble.
When we went through to the bar area it felt like a home from home. Nothing was too much for the staff they worked tirelessly to make sure we had everything we need. There was a wide range of drinks available that we could choose from so there was something for everyone.
We were then taken to our table in a light but warming room where you could tell everything had been picked out with care.
The starters were dough balls and scotch eggs (runny in the middle) they were full of flavour and not too heavy that we couldn’t enjoy our mains!
The mains we had were the beef shin, fish and chips. (It is very rare my husband cannot finish a meal but the portions sizes were generous and tasted amazing! He didn’t want to leave any but he couldn’t finish his meal) The beef was soft and had a lot of flavour! The pizza’s, although we didn’t try them looked incredible…I know what I will be having next time!
For desert we had stick toffee pudding and sorbet - I like deserts so this was a real test of their skill! All I can say is WOW they were amazing! I could have eaten it again and again! Definitely recommend saving room for deserts!
Throughout our meal we had a lovely waitress I believe her name was Amy and she was polite and attentive. She made us feel very welcome and she was never too far away when we needed her.
I loved our experience here and will definitely be visiting again.

We’ve just returned from a lovely couple of nights at the George. It had such a nice vibe about it and the staff were all on the ball, professional and friendly. Great music play list meant that there wasn’t that awkward deathly silence in the restaurant where everyone is too afraid to chat! Food was great, room was spotless…only thing we did ask was if there were any other pillows…we found the memory foam a bit hard. We were in room Patrick at the front of the hotel, road noise really wasn’t a problem and I even had the window open all night…and far enough from the bar to hear nothing from there. Great find…

This was a return visit (had fond memories from several years ago) to celebrate our anniversary. Our room was spacious and comfortable. Only negative was the noisy floorboards from room above. We were on a deal which included a tour of the David Mellor museum. We requested our tickets to be told that the tours are currently not running due to COVID. This was understandable but a nice gesture would have been to offer us a drink or something in its place. We also did not realise what else was included (ie I ordered a glass of wine which was in the offer but my husband’s beer was not.) It would have been nice to have been reminded.
Our afternoon tea and evening meal were v good but breakfast was disappointing. Some things we ordered did not appear and we had to repeat requests a number of times.
We were unable to connect to the WiFi at any time.

We stayed here for two nights at fairly short notice as another hotel in the Peak District cancelled our booking.

We booked on the basis of the hotel website and trip advisor reviews and were shocked to find out shortly after we arrived that the hotel only has a 3 star food hygiene rating - not what we were expecting from a “luxury” hotel and “award winning”restaurant. The food hygiene rating is not displayed anywhere that we could see.

After a frosty reception because we arrived 5 minutes before check in time, we were told that it was “company policy” to pre authorise our card with an extra £50 per night for “extras”. I refused and it was begrudgingly reduced to £25 per night. I pointed out we had booked a dinner, bed and breakfast rate and the receptionist told me the extra pre authorisation was in case we wanted drinks. Nothing about this was mentioned on my booking confirmation.

We booked a “superior” room, but there was nothing special about it, it hadn’t been cleaned properly (the carpet and ledge under the window were dirty) and the shower screen seals were dirty and damaged.

The food was absolutely awful and the menu was very limited. The food all seemed reheated rather than freshly cooked. One of my starters was cold on the middle and the gammon was so salty it was almost inedible. My husband ordered soup, but was told they had “runout of a lot of things actually” when he asked for a bread roll to go with it. He then had Ragu which was basically bolognese padded out with vegetables. Breakfast was awful too - it’s not often I’ve had eggs that bad and the bacon was so dry like it was like it had been kept warm for ages. I could produce much better food myself at home and I didn’t finish any of my meals.

However the restaurant staff were friendly and tried hard to be helpful.

We ordered a bottle of champagne for our room on arrival, but it was not provided. However, we were still charged for it at the end of our stay, although it was removed from our bill when challenged. We were also charged for “service” on top of the Dinner, Bed and Breakfast rate, which was again removed when challenged. I was told this was mentioned on my booking confirmation, but I have double checked and it wasn’t.

The George is mentioned on several hotel booking websites as “the restaurant has won an two AA rosette award”, however no mention of this is made on the AA website. Their own website mentions “fine dining”, however, gammon and chips is not fine dining!

All in all we feel that the George has misrepresented itself and it felt like the hotel was cutting corners whilst simultaneously trying to take money for “extras” at every opportunity which did not sit well with us. At just short of £400 for two nights DBB, this is not a cheap hotel.
