A dream of a place to stay in a truly living village. You won't find warmer or more welcoming and thoughtful hosts anywhere. Outstanding and memorably lovely. We were very fortunate that our visit drew us very close to the village's heart. We came away very convinced that life

The Old Shoulder of Mutton is a fabulous place to stay! Steven and Julie are incredibly welcoming and could not have been more friendly or helpful during our stay. Their home is stunning - it is a beautiful property and every little thing has been thought of for their guests.

We are pleased to hear that your room was well appointed and you had everything you needed. It is also good to hear that you enjoyed your breakfast and received a warm welcome. We are however disappointed that you seem to have judged your stay on car parking. Whilst we respect your opinion, this is our first "Average" review after 7 years of 302 "Excellent" and just 3 "Very Good" reviews. The majority clearly consider us to be better than Average including the Michelin Guide. For the record we have two off road spaces and umpteen free and unrestricted on street spaces in the immediate vicinity. Winster is generally regarded as one of the prettiest villages in the Peak District with the highest concentration of Listed Buildings in the National Park. It has been here for many hundreds of years and certainly pre-dates the invention of the motor car. That's one of the things that makes these old villages so quaint. It's why people come here. It is something to be celebrated. As for crowded, there are only 600 residents in a village that used to house 1200 people in 1700. It is a small village with pathways and tracks between the houses linking the few roads. All the houses and cottages are different and all are named. West Bank is far from busy being an unclassified road in this tiny community. The Old Bowling Green (dating back to 1472) does only open for meals on four days of the week - thankfully throughout your stay. The Miners Standard (1653) is open all day every day and also provides excellent meals at lunch time and evening. Within 40 minutes walk there are a further 2 great pubs - we can lend you a torch if you don't like the dark.

Train is the answer. Heathrow to St Pancras, then to Derby and change for Matlock. 5 miles then to Winster by taxi or local bus 172. We have lovely walks from the door in the beautiful Peak District. Chatsworth House 9 miles, Haddon Hall 6 miles. Plenty nearby.
