There is no denying that the building and grounds of this hotel are beautiful and it is certainly an escape from everyday life.

My luxury room was spacious, clean and tastefully decorated, with a gorgeous marble bathroom and all of the amenities you could ever want.

The staff are by far what made my visit to Alexander House. I was warmly greeted by every staff member I came across and made to feel welcome and valued. Their small touches and proactive, discreet service went a long way in helping me relax and indulge.

I chose this hotel mainly due to the spa, which unfortunately was rather underwhelming. Firstly the charge just to access the wet facilities seems rather greedy considering the cost of the room for the night. There was no fresh fruit or snacks offered which I find is normally standard in 5* spas. I appreciated having separate steam/sauna in the changing rooms however these were incredibly small and didn’t feature any smell infusions or niche features. It was just like the locker room at my gym at home. I also wasn’t comfortable with the female attendants continually walking around the male changing area. I’m sure a male employee wouldn’t be allowed to walk around the female section. The pool/jacuzzi area was pretty but lacked any sort of ambiance and it wasn’t a particularly relaxing atmosphere. I had planned to spend the evening in the spa but left after an hour or so.

My other disappointment came at breakfast time. The selection was rather limited, especially the hot options. Like everywhere else in the hotel the service was brilliant but my food was a tad bland and uninspiring. I had breakfast included in my rate but had I paid the £22 charge listed on the menu I wouldn’t have felt I had gotten value for money.

Overall this is a beautiful building with wonderfully attentive staff, but take that away and it is just like any other upmarket chain hotel, albeit double the price.

I was pleased to read that you were satisfied with the high standard of service provided by the staff throughout your stay and enjoyed the comfort and cleanliness of your beautiful luxury room. This is the ninth time we have stayed at the hotel and we still love it. Our room was a Cedar Lodge Suite with a balcony and this was wonderful to make use of the fine weather. Breakfast alfresco was great!

Our massive bed meant we had a great sleep and social distancing was managed perfectly. You can book a table for breakfast if you wish to dine in the restaurant, and I strongly advise pre-booking dinner.

You do need to pre-book spa times if you don't have a treatment scheduled. However you can do this on the day and I liked this idea as in pre-Covid times the spa gets very busy,. With a maximum of I think ten or fifteen in there maximum is adds to the relaxing feel of the hotel.

There's an app you can use to order from the bar and a button marked "call waiter" if you need something off the menu or just help. The restaurant gives you an option of using the QR code for ordering or you can use the menu.

We left after two days feeling thoroughly spoiled, every happy and already planning a repeat visit...

This is our 4/5th stay at Alexander House! The hotel maintained high Covid standards throughout our 2 night stay and staff went out of their way to make it a pleasurable experience. Had lovely lunch in Champagne Bar and checked into our room at 3pm. We stayed in "Magnolia" a luxury super king room, situated on the 2nd floor with wonderful views overlooking the spa. The grounds are amazing and you can literally walk for miles. Our evening meal was delicious and the breakfast was top notch ... cannot understand any bad feedback ... we had choice of fruit juice, followed by cereal/fresh fruit, basket of pastries/toast and choice of full English and usual other options - absolutely faultless. Gym was well equipped and also made good use of the tennis court. We cannot wait to return!

Just come back from an overnight stay with my Husband for our Anniversary using a gift voucher.
I was really excited to visit Alexander House and the spa as it's been on my wish list for ages. I was looking forward to good things but was sadly very underwhelmed.
We stayed in the Acer spa suite which was amazing. The huge shower was also a steam room.
Only issue with the room was that where the carpet ends and tiled floor starts there are exposed carpet gripper rods which are very sharp under a bare foot.
The spa is alot smaller than I thought. Very overcrowded. We couldn't get a chair or a lounger until a member of staff removed some towels. We then acquired 2 chairs but was soon met with a grumpy man who returned to find his reserved chairs were taken. There is only 1 small jacuzzi outsider unless you pay £30 for 30 mins in a private one.
There is no private cubicles in the ladies changing room. If you want to change privately you have to use a toilet!
We booked a table in Reflections restaurant for 9pm. We ordered at 9. 10pm last orders taken at 9.30pm. We didn't receive our starters for 45 mins. A member of staff noticed our long wait and said it would be 4 minutes more but this was more like 15 mins.
We both ordered a fillet steak. They mixed up the sauces so consequently both our steaks were not cooked as requested. The steaks were not tender. I was chewing mine for ages. The chips were supposed to be triple cooked but most were hard.
As a good will gesture the cost of the bread, water, dessert and service charge was removed.
Breakfast was a similar story. Took 40 mins to arrive. Beans were watery and tasteless.
We spoke to Guest Manager who was very apologetic and has offered us a discount next time and a complimentary room upgrade but to be honest I definitely won't be returning.
I can't fault the staff or the hospitality but the food and spa was a real disappointment for what is supposed to be a 5 star hotel which is very expensive.

Dear samjoe79, Thank you for taking the time to write a review on TripAdvisor following your recent stay at Alexander House Hotel and Utopia Spa. I was pleased to read that you liked our Spa Suite but sorry that other aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations. Here at Alexander House, we strive to provide our guests with a superior quality of service and I am sorry to hear that we did not meet your expectations on this occasion. I am sorry you did not enjoy your time at our multiple times awarded Utopia Spa and found it too small to your liking. Our spa facilities includes an indoor swimming, indoor hot tub, Hydrotherapy pool, indoor sauna, indoor steams, an outdoor hot tub, outdoor sauna and 4 private hot tubs.We do also offer 25 treatment rooms, a relaxation lounge, gymnasium, studio, and a hair and beauty saloon. Please accept our sincere apology for the difficulties you experienced at dinner. Our Restaurant Manager did offer for the steaks to be replaced which you declined at the time. I am sorry you were disappointed with your breakfast experience. We did not experience any delays at breakfast, in fact your order was placed at 9.31 am and the bill was closed to your room at 9.54 am after your breakfast had been delivered and a check completed at your table. I hope that you will give us the opportunity to welcoming you back and change your opinion of the hotel. Kind Regards, Sindarmy Vingadassalom Guest Services Manager

A friend and I had our summer holiday cancelled due to COVID so we decided to take a one night spa stay in the UK instead. Heard great things about AH and so we were really excited.

Arrival: Arrived and couldn’t check in until 3pm - not a massive issue but given check out is 11am this does seem rather late!

Service: Due to the current pandemic the hotel staff are all in visors but strangely they do not enforce mask wearing amongst guests in public areas, despite a few signs sporadically dotted around. Ordering a drink in the bar or food in the restaurant is all done via an App but beware you will still be charged 12.5% service for the privilege! The App also feels a bit restrictive as there is no option to request “extras” or tailor your meal in any way. Similarly despite the weather being warm but cloudy, there was no option to eat outside. A shame when the landscape and gardens are so lovely.

Spa: I opted for a massage and went for the kundalini back massage. Quite pricey but I wanted a real treat. Sadly I was a bit disappointed as this was a very “light touch“ and slightly alternative treatment and some of the massage time was also focused on the legs which was not mentioned when booking. Probably not the best option for anyone looking for a more traditional back massage to get the knots out! We tried to order champagne by the pool via the App but waited 45 mins and nothing arrived.

Room: The room was on the second floor and was a good size with a fantastic bathroom. Sadly the room was excessively hot as there is no air conditioning on the second floor and so we had to sleep with windows and curtains open so the air could flow around the room. Not ideal, as it made the room very light and noisy too and certainly not conducive to a good sleep.

Despite it being a “nice stay” I don’t think this hotel matches up to its 5 star status. They definitely need to invest in air conditioning!

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to post a review on Tripadvisor following you recent stay at Alexander House Hotel and Utopia Spa. I was pleased to read that you had an enjoyable stay but disappointed to read that some aspects of your stay did not meet your expectations. Here at Alexander House, we strive to provide our guests with a superior quality of service, and I am sorry to hear that you left us with a diverse opinion of the hotel on this occasion. Our arrival and departure time are stated on our website as well as on our guests booking confirmation. We do however offer an early check in option from 12pm or late check out option until 2pm for guests who would like to stay longer,at a supplement charge of £50. As you mentioned in your review, we do have many signs around the hotel encouraging guests to wear face masks in the public area. This information is also available on our hotel website. However, we cannot force every guests to use face masks, as I am sure you will appreciate that some customers cannot wear them for medical reasons. Our guests and staff safety are our number one priority. We have put in place many measures to be COVID secure and this include the use of a new application, so our guests can order food and drinks safely and in order to reduce the number of interactions with staff. We do however still offer a waiting service and apply a discretionary service charge as mentioned on our menus, which can be removed at our guests discretion. We have many dining outside space for guests to use, such as our Afternoon Tea Terrace, Champagne Bar Terrace or our Reflections Restaurant Courtyard which has been opened all summer. We have recently had rainy days when we had to close some of this areas for the day but they have been opened on any other days. I am sorry the Kundalini back massage that you had chosen did not correspond to what you were looking for. Our Kundalini massage is a very light pressure treatment which focuses on energy and balance. We do offer a variety of treatments responding to different needs. From your comments, I believe that our Prana Vitaly treatment, which is more of an invigorating massage might have been more suitable to your needs. If visiting us again, please feel free to contact us for advise. I am sorry to hear that you had to wait a long time for your champagne. Please allow me to extend my sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused. I am pleased you liked your room and its bathroom. I am sorry that due to the exceptional hot weather we had , you did not have a comfortable sleep. Due to the unique and traditional character of the hotel, air conditioning are not available in all our hotel rooms. Rooms with air conditioning facilities are advertised on our hotel website. A fan is provided in each bedrooms and portable air conditioning units are available on request. I hope that despite your experience, you will give us the opportunity to welcoming you back again and change your opinion of the hotel. Kind Regards, Sindarmy Vingadassalom Guest Services Manager

First time visiting Alexander House for our Staff Christmas Dinner and overnight stay. Have heard great thinks from friends about the hotel so was looking forward to our stay. Check in was fast and simple, we were given the 'Sycamore Room' (All the rooms are named after trees which is a nice touch). Feature of the room was the massive bathroom which is larger than the living area itself. Unfortunately the bed was borderline unbearable with a solid strut running down the center leaving me with backache the next morning. I mentioned this to the check out team who mentioned they have had this complaint in this room before but not much seems to have been done nevertheless.

The meal itself was OK. A very unusual menu, I was unable to see a starter I liked so instead just had the Turkey Christmas Main Course which was a bit of a sad state of affairs. Tiny portion compared to others at the table and dry roast potatoes and the bare minimum amount of Gravy. The enjoyment of the meal was salvaged by a delightful Dessert.

We didn't stay long enough to try out the Spa however I hear this is a wonderful experience but can't comment sadly but overall an average stay. May try again later in the year hoping this was a one off.

I visited Alexander House solo for a much needed break. I travelled from Nottingham (a 3 hour drive) and booked to stay in March. I had to rearrange because of the recent lockdown. Rearranging was effortless and smooth. Before I checked in I was sent an email to bid on an upgrade, which I did, and it was successful, which meant I got a lovely room for a fraction of the usual fee.

On my booking I paid for full use of the spa facilities. Understandably, the spa was not fully open during my stay but I was not informed of this until I emailed the hotel to ask. I was advised on the email that I would have an hours ‘residential use’ of the spa each day during my two night stay- I was not told that there would be a £20 charge per day for this. I didn’t use the spa because of the super warm weather and the charge was removed.

Upon arrival and check in at the hotel I was given no information about anything (breakfast times and where it would be served, how to order food on the app system that is in place following recent events) and thought it would all be provided in my room, this wasn’t the case. This is definitely a minimum part of the service I would expect when spending so much money and have received better service when spending much less.

When I checked out I had items added to my bill that weren’t mine, these were removed but I’m glad I checked it.

The vegan breakfast was exceptional, as was the service at breakfast. The vegan selection on the dinner menu was good but I’m glad I had a discount on my food bill as part of the ‘eat out to help out scheme’. The food seems really overpriced for the quality.

My room was lovely although extremely warm in the hot weather- I read online that the hotel has air con but that wasn’t true of the room I stayed in. There was an air cooling fan in the room, although a £10 charge for a bucket of ice seems a little excessive especially when it’s so warm.

One thing that I was very impressed with is the gym. Probably one of the best hotel gyms I have ever used, extensive equipment that is very clean and a lovely, airy studio space too.

Overall, I was a little underwhelmed with AH but I would stay again with an improvement in service and food quality.

I got taken here as a birthday treat. The hotel itself is a lovely building, and I really liked the open fires. We had a spa suite which was a great room, so spacious, decorated nicely, had everything you need. Bed was comfy, loads of sockets. The bathroom was fantastic, large bath and a steam room shower.
We had afternoon tea which was really nice, good food, warm scones! The staff really struggle with their English, which is a little hard work to communicate.
After our afternoon tea we went to the spa, which for me was included as I had a spa treatment booked but for my partner it was an extra £20, which Personally I think is terrible if you have booked a stay in the hotel. The steam/sauna are in the relevant changing rooms so you can’t go in with your partner! Outdoor jacuzzi and sauna are really nice. The pool area was very busy, I’d say too many people were booked in for spa days! Also someone moved our towels off our bed when we were in the pool!
I had a massage which was Very expensive! £120! Now I love a spa and treatments and am lucky enough to have been to a few, however I have never paid this price for a massage, and I can honestly say it was very average! I definitely did not feel like it was worth that! I have paid half that price and got a much better massage! Lack of technique. So overall not impressed with the spa! I would of liked to mark separately to the hotel! As the hotel would get higher!
Breakfast in the morning was lovely 😊 lots of choice.

We had booked for a surprise birthday and seeing as its a spa hotel we wanted to make use of the Spa.
The reservations team had messed the bookings (total of 4 rooms)
1. Incorrect email address and never thought to contact the lead member of the group via telephone to request email address.
2. The spa appointments booked were cancelled without knowledge of lead booker.
3. The spa treatments booked for a guest and as a birthday gift were suggested for an upgrade to the client without knowledge to the payer. this is very cheeky of the spa to suggest one treatment when another had been paid for.
4. As a spa hotel they had suggested that guests pay £25 per hour to use the spa but were unable to provide slots for the group, and then suggsted on day of checkout that we could only use the spa between 7am and 8am. None of which was shared at check in.
5. The was orginally booked for 7.30pm however on several times on calling the hotel they confirmed the booking was for 8.30pm and on check in they had put 6.30pm. This was very confusing. The hotel management offered a private dining room as a guesture of goodwill. This was very kind of them.
6. The afternoon tea was good however we did have to leave one room to find the waitress to bring out the afternoon tea and to top up the tea. They offered no water and also bought out the childrens afternoon tea AFTER the adults and again we had to request additional plates and cups.
7. The dinner was fantastic and the service was great. however when it came to review the bill the waiter only asked for a room to assign it to. they did not offer for a bill to be checked by the group. i found this a little strange but the bill was 100% accurate. The service was high however the food and service was great.
8. The breakfast in the morning was below average. No one had explained that we had to order via the app and that we could order whatever we liked. we had to repeat orders for tea/coffee etc. The app also works better on iphone than other phone.
9. The management team were very understanding however the marketing team and the senior team needs to revist thier marketing strategies and not make offers on their website which they cannot keep to.

Considering the reviews of the spa i would like to visit again to USE the spa and have a treatment,

Booked with my wife to celebrate our anniversary and have a break after lockdown, this place was a huge disappointment.

We have stayed in various hotels of differing stars globally and I will say this hotel is classed completely wrong.

We booked a Junior Suite, it wasn't a Junior Suite I feel the hotel has pushed their rooms up a level to charge more for them. The bathroom was a massive letdown, every junior suite i have stayed in has a shower bigger then the bath in Goodwood.
We were not the only people complaining about the rooms, we heard 3 other instances of people saying they didn't think the rooms were at the level of being charged.

The Spa was fine if a little tired, the treatments we had were both good if a little expensive.

Food we had both dinner and breakfast. Dinner was below average, this restaurant should not display AA rosette as the food was less than chain restaurant standard.
Breakfast was terrible, juice was cheap concentrate, coffee watery and the cooked breakfast the worst I have had in years, the last Premier Inn breakfast I had was 20x better. My wife had fruit salad straight out of a can which was tastless.
Again we were not the only people complaining about the standard of the food, when you pay this much you expect the highest quality and it wasn't.

The hotel itself is a nice venue and all of the staff in the Spa, hotel and restaurant were its saving grace othwise this would have been a complete disaster of a stay.

We feel pretty ripped off to be honest, when I mentioned all the above all I was offered was to remove the service charge for dinner which I didn't take as the restaurant servinf staff had done a good job.

I recommend you spend you money elsewhere.

Dear GRB30001, Thank you for taking the time to write a review on Tripadvisor following your recent stay at Alexande House Hotel and Utopia Spa. I was sorry to hear that your recent experience with us did not meet your expectations. Our Goodwood Suite is one of our guests'favourite suite in the hotel and I am sorry to hear that you left us with a diverse opinion of the hotel. I believe your comments not to be a true reflections of the quality of service we endeavour to provide to our guests. We have been accredited AA rosettes for many consecutive years and even received a breakfast award from the AA. Kind Regards, Sindarmy Vingadassalom Guest Services Manager
