Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Not a bad place to stay but could use a bit of a spruce-up. Ensuite smelled of drainage, outside balcony and walkways a bit grubby and needed painting. King bed was actually two singles pushed together, with a ridge in between. Staff friendly. Well-stocked minibar. The good thing is the Sovereign provides a free transfer bus to and from the airstrip.

We stayed at this resort hotel as part of a touring group and were more than pleasantly surprised by the quality of the accommodation, the meals and the professionalism of all staff we interacted with. Our suite was large, bright and airy with everything one would expect in a top class hotel. A great bar area and restaurant made for a wonderful place to relax at the end of the day. If ever we return to Cooktown, we would not consider staying anywhere else. Top marks to management.

I really enjoyed staying here. The beds were so comfy, pillows were perfect and the shower was amazing! I was very happy with the restaurant. The food was delicious and the service was extremely fast. Exactly what I am looking for when I book a hotel. I couldn’t fault the place!

This is a very nice hotel and base to check out the highlights of Cooktown, modern and clean with an attractive frontage. It offers large rooms and good bathrooms. The onsite dining area was likewise very good. It was quiet and the bed very comfortable giving a good sleep. The WiFi worked well. There’s are nice views over the town and Endeavour River from the upstairs balcony. It is a few minutes-walk to the waterfront, statues, and museum.

Spacious rooms with air conditioning (needed!). Pool was amazing and a lovely respite from the heat. We ate dinner and breakfast at the hotel restaurant - top notch! Special mention to the attention when we "complained" that the WIFI did not work. Apparently, it has recently been damaged in a bad storm. The router was replaced and the WIFI worked - thank you.

We came here as it looked nice from outside and busy so thought it must be good. We waited a while to be served at the bar. We ordered calamari to share (entree) chicken schnitzel veg and mash and steak chips and salad. It all came out together which was a bit disappointing as we ended up with a lot of food all at once. Calamari was delicious and lots of it. They got chips salad/ mixed up with veg and mash (wrong plates ) which we swapped ourselves easily. Table was dirty when we arrived , had to ask for it to be cleaned. Mains were good portions, veg and mash delicious and great selection of vegetables, I could have just eaten them. Schnitzel was a bit dry. My husbands steak a bit chewy.

Driving into Cooktown is a bit like taking a step back in time - which is part of the place's charm. While the Sovereign Hotel shares some of the laidback ambience of the town, it also succeeds as a first-rate tropical resort hotel, starting with the lagoon-like pool and the beautiful, well-maintained gardens. We had no complaints about our room - spacious, clean and airy with a usable balcony overlooking the pool and garden. Bathroom also a good size. Wifi signal was good. We were also happy with our meal at the restaurant - barramundi and local king prawns.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Sovereign Resort. First there was the food - mouthwatering local prawns and fish and a great array of other dishes which we enjoyed sitting on a balcony watching an amazingly beautiful sunset and enjoying excellent service. The room was spacious with interesting and attractive aboriginal artworks on the wall all the amenities we could want. The balcony looks over the pool which winds its way between the blocks of rooms. All the staff were friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble to ensure our enjoyment. The location is near the centre of Cooktown which means it is a short walk to most attractions. We could not have asked for anything more. The hotel has a guest laundry which is reasonably priced.

One night stop over as part of a travel group and enjoyed all aspects of accommodation and dining. Room layout was functional and shower water pressure OK. Dined there for both breakfast (buffet style) and dinner with set menu of 3 choices. Food was good but servings were smaller than expected for dinner. Great location and staff all friendly and helpful. Sleep comfort also good and our room had a balcony overlooking swimming pool.
