Dear Wendi J, Thank you for your review of your time at Home Hotel recently, following on from your husbands review which he posted a few weeks previous, so I apologise if I repeat some information but I will try my best to address your review, although I'm not sure quite where to start... The cats, which you so begrudgingly took over the looking after once a previous guest left. As I mentioned in your husbands review, we try and keep the cats in a specific area of the hotel, namely the front and away from the rooms and public areas, once way we do this is to feed them a couple of times a week in the same area, which we tell guests about in conversation. Problems arise when guests then take it upon themselves to feed the cats near their rooms, but the real problems occur when guests start to feed the cats in their rooms and actively encourage them into their rooms, allowing them to sleep there, eat and even giving them medication from your own supply. Thankfully you were the last guests to use this room and we were able to break the cats of their expectations of food and shelter from your room, however, as we explained to you on several occasions, we provide care and treatments for the local cats, including having them neutered in an attempt to reduce the cat population in the area, all of which is by our own expense or with the help of specialist local charities. The lack of food this year is correct, we reduced our breakfast options and did not provide as many cooked meals or BBQs this year and that was a difficult decision we had to make due to staffing levels for the 2018 season, however, I am very excited about the new options we will be offering for the 2019 season, including the cooked breakfasts and food available until midnight. It is worth pointing out that we have never advertised as self-catering accommodation so you would not expect to find cooking facilities in the rooms. I must admit I wish you had spoken to us before trying to find the local tavernas and shops because if you were having to do a 'long walk to the local shops' and a 'hike' at meal times I suspect you were heading in completely the wrong direction. A short 3 minute stroll along a flat tarmac road and you would have arrived at the local beachfront road where you would have found a selection of tavernas and supermarkets, admittedly it can feel a little longer on the way back after a good meal and plenty of alcohol, both of which you were never shy of during your and your husbands stay with us, but it is by no means a hike or long walk. As I mentioned in your husbands review, we did indeed suffer a loss of lighting in the garden area leading to your rooms and it was unfortunate that it happened on one of the nights when you were both propping up the bar which may have been a factor in the incident, however, we did all we could to rectify the lighting situation as quickly as possible. I must point out at this point that, whilst help was offered to your husband by a member of our team, who is himself a trained and practised nurse, the tirade of verbal abuse that your husband hurled at my member of staff was quite unacceptable, and in the end your husband refused any help, a point he later signed to in the accident book, along with a statement that it was a minor stumble resulting in little more than a bruised ego. As for the other guest, I do wish (once again) that you had mentioned his behaviour to a member of the team. We take any kind of inappropriate behaviour towards our staff and guest extremely seriously and would have had no issue removing the guest from the hotel if you felt that their behaviour was so abhorrent. I must assume that, because you did not mention it to any of the team that your maturely aged husband was able to deal with the behaviour, and the situation, himself, especially as this is the first time I am hearing of it. Given your current roles and the fact that you are tied to the northern part of Scotland, I fail to understand what support you could provide to us during your 7 nights stay and following, however, we are always pleased to hear from people who have an understanding of the hospitality industry in a foreign country where they speak another language other than speaking loudly and gesturing to be understood. We wish you luck with your move of house and with your continued caring profession, it is a true calling what you now do. All the best, Ben

Dear sinclairbob1, Thank you for your candid review of your stay with us at Home Hotel recently, we are sorry it was not as enjoyable as you anticipated, but we d appreciate the acknowledgement for our effort in making you feel welcome and relaxed during your stay in Crete. You are correct that there were no cooked breakfasts or evening meals offered during your stay, we have been down several staff this year and are pleased to announce that we have a new, bigger, team in place for 2019 and have revamped all of our services, which will include cooked breakfasts, all-day snack menus and cooked options several nights through the week, although we have no issue with our guests spending their money in local tavernas, we feel that this supports local businesses and allows guests to see more of the island and culture than that of inside the hotel like so many all inclusive hotels. The rooms are being worked on this winter, for the new season, and we hope that guests see an improvement in them, although we are a little restricted by space and the age of the buildings we are slowly making improvements year on year and we always appreciate constructive criticism from guests as this helps us to plan ways of improving the Home experience. The fact your balcony did not get brushed was in a large part because you seem to have take it upon yourselves to use this as the local feeding point for the hotel cats, and by doing so attracting a greater number of stray cats. We try and discourage guests from feeding the cats in their rooms, or encouraging them to their rooms because, whilst you may think you are helping them, you are just creating an expectation in the cats that this room will be where they get fed all year, and this is not to every guests liking or desire. We told you that we feed the cats, in a specific place, but this did not seem to register or have any significance to you so now the cats must be broken of a habit they did not have, although this will be easier now we are coming into the winter period and the hotel will be closed. You are also correct that we suffered an outage of the garden lights during your stay and I am pleased to say that, after several visits by an electrician, this was resolved, but it is also something we are looking at replacing for next year to ensure greater illumination for guests at night. Of course your fall was not helped by the amount of alcohol you had consumed and the fact that you were heading up the wrong stairs to a different room, however, after your rather abusive tirade at our member of staff who was offering you assistance especially as he is a qualified and experienced nurse, you refused any help and seemed quite happy that there was no significant damage done to yourself, indeed this is what you agreed to and signed in the accident book. This said we did appreciate your apology for your language and behaviour once you calmed down again. We wish you all the best with your move to your new house. Ben

Hi arriving very late on Saturday, really looking forward to our stay does anyone have an idea of cost of taxi and how long it will take? Just want to be sure of the best way as its a late flight. Thank you
Hi there, There are 2 options for a late/early arrival: We can organise a taxi to meet you at the airport, we just need your arrive time and flight number, which you can e-mail to the hotel at our gmail address The taxi costs 40 EUR and you pay the driver direct. Or, some guests have used a hoppa transfer service, although I'm not too sure how this works. Ben (Home Hotel)

Hi there we are arriving on Sat night this week. I am just wondering what facilities there are in our room for tea coffee etc. I know we have a fridge but wasn't sure if there was a small kitchenette or not thanks looking forward to our holiday :) Heather x
HI there, The bedrooms are just Room only, not self catering, so there are no kitchenettes in the rooms, at the moment. Looking forward to welcoming you Home on Saturday. Ben

My wife and i are considering popping in here in September and were wondering if you offer the free Raki shot's at the bar that are so popular throughout Crete and how often they are offered. Yammas!!!
Dear traveller, Whilst we are not native Greek inhabitants, we have certainly adopted some of the local customs and Raki is at the top of that list! Raki is always available... Hic... as long as we have any left! Yammas...hic....
