Redworth Hall Hotel captivates guests with its historical allure, nestled in a prime location that garners praise for its scenic beauty and tranquil gardens. However, visitors have mixed opinions regarding the hotel's offerings; while some commend the spa and spacious rooms, others recount areas needing refurbishment and criticize maintenance issues.
Service experiences vary, with commendations for friendly staff tempered by accounts of lackluster restaurant service. Though meals are deemed overpriced, the overall cleanliness receives positive remarks, despite noise complaints from ongoing maintenance and other disturbances.

Detailed Reviews
So we booked a deal through MyHotelBreak as it was a very good price, terms and conditions were that we would be upgraded to a deluxe room as long as there was one available, we checked into our room to find a standard room so I went down to reception to ask about the Deluxe room to be told there wasn’t any available, I looked on my phone as though I was making a new booking which was letting me book a Deluxe room so I told this to the receptionist who replied that they were full, makes me think this is false advertisement! Our room was fine apart from it was definitely not cleaned up to a good standard, given what’s going on I expected it to be spotless but no, I found a cotton bud under the table, makeup stains on 2 of the towels, around the bath there was hairs and lots of dust. I am really disgusted that the room wasn’t cleaned properly and the hotel management really need to be checking the rooms before guests arrive. The lady who brought us our drinks/room service and breakfast was very polite and helpful, only one housekeeping staff said good morning to us. I have stayed at this hotel before and was a total different experience but this time I am very disappointed and not sure if I would return.

Dear Id199120, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. I am sorry that on this occasion their were no upgrades available, we do try and upgrade where possible so that our guests have an enhanced stay however if others book a deluxe then they get these first. I will pass your comments to the housekeeping department. As part of our opening procedures all the housekeeping team did receive additional training on touch points so I am sorry that this was the case. I am pleased that the team were friendly and thank you for coming and staying with us. Kind Regards, Lee Kirtland Operations Manager

Booked the Redworth Hall 2 night winter break which included a 3 course dinner, and breakfast as well as use of the spa.
On arrival we were amazed to find our room was more of a suite with a double room with TV and adjoining spacious second bedroom with two single beds a another to which could be used as a living room. The whole thing including the bathroom was clean, modern and tasteful. It felt very luxurious!
The service and food in the restaurant was very good and the breakfast amazing. The pool was warm and kept clean with salt rather than chlorine which was so much more pleasant. The steam room , sauna and jacuzzi were also great.
Overall I don't know how they do it for the money! Great value!
I can't recommend it highly enough, this was our second trip and we will certainly be back.

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveller reviews.
We have had 5 weekends away since lockdown was eased and this was the worst one so far. The hall looks very impressive from outside but it is a little tired inside. The car park would benefit from the dead leaves being cleared and the two old discarded lounge chairs being cleared away. Our room (610 ) was dark and very 'brown' with low lighting and very little light from the window, quite depressing really.
The one bright spot was the shower which was impressive but the magnifying mirror over the wash basin needed adjusting to stay in position and needed a good clean on the back. TV worked as did the air conditioning but it would have been nice to have a fridge in the room.
Food was only just adequate, the evening meal felt as if it had been pre -prepared, frozen and microwaved to suit. My fish had lost its firmness and texture and much of its taste, but the big problem was breakfast. To order breakfast we had to fill out a form, the format of the form was confusing and had not been thought through. I suspect that a family of three or four would not be able to get any sort of variation on the 'full English'.
We had two nights stay and had our first evening meal in the more formal restaurant area but were relegated to the 'bistro' style section for our second evening.
On the whole we felt the hotel was rather regimented and impersonal and not good value for money compared to our other weekends away this year

We decided to visit as a family for a post Xmas get together. Prior to arriving I rang to check what time we could start using the facilities and was informed 12pm but when arriving we were informed it was 1pm. We had booked the stay, dine and spa package. We decided to have a drink before using the spa and even though the lady behind the bar was good the service was extremely slow due to not having the right drinks behind the bar and having to run around to be able to complete the order. We then went to get our gowns for starting to use the pool etc and was dealt with by an extremely rude lady who informed us we would have to pay £7.50 each for the gowns but on the package it says you are given them. Whilst trying to explain this she decided to answer the phone mid conversation without excusing herself. Luckily another member of staff approached and sorted it for us but there wasn’t enough gowns and was left waiting quite a while for another 3. The facilities were absolutely packed and totally unable to swim or enjoy the pool.
We then ordered 2 seperate afternoon teas and when it was brought out it was on one stand and we weren’t informed. Unfortunately the sandwiches were extremely stale.
We then got checked in the room was a deluxe one. I went to use the spa bath but when I put the spa on the amount of bits of black floating around was vile.
The evening meal was average but the young lad who served us sorry I forgot his name was excellent after my husbands meal was brought out and an absolute joke of a meal quickly replaced it.
We then went to the bar and the lad was asked to change a couple of drinks because they were completely flat served in dirty glasses he stood and argued that there was nothing wrong with them. Luckily his colleague witnessed it and corrected it straight away.
After boasting to the family about Redworth after our last visit I’ve come away really disappointed and really reluctant to visit again.

Hotel was beautiful, fantastic location and stunning grounds, now I realise Covid is on, but the food offerings in the restaurant were poor, for example starter and meal is £25, if you want a steak that is an additional £9, very expensive for a mediocre steak, i have had much better steaks for a lot less. I was not keen on the veg, it certainly didn't seem to be fresh, the brocoli that was served was way overcooked, and tasteless. The room I had was dreary, the windows didn't open very far so avoid booking a standard room if you don't like it too hot. The SPA rooms have AC. At breakfast my Flora spread did not taste right and it was 7 months out of date as were all the other spreads on the plate. The gym was good and I certainly felt safe in the current conditions. I did not try the pool. I had a second week booked here which I cancelled and spent the following week in a Jurys inn as I could not face another week of the same menu with its overpriced school dinners. There was no maid service so you have to request fresh towels, teabags, soap etc. I probably wont stay here again.

I would never have booked this tired scruffy hotel if I had known you have to clean your own room. We paid £170 for two nights and in a hotel you expect the staff to clean your room. We stayed at Bowburn Hall 3 weeks ago no problem room cleaned each morning and communal areas spotless . The dinning room we had a meal in was scruffy, more like a storage room with 6 scruffy tables no table cloths only the food was worth a tick everything else disappointing. I would never recommend this hotel to anyone and certainly won’t be coming back. Spoke to manager who was absolutely no help just waffled on about staff safety they won’t need staff because they won’t get customers. Totally ruined my weekend

Dear marissa0303, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. I am sorry to see that you have left this review after threatening me with it yesterday after I was trying to help you. After speaking with your husband, he was telling me of the great time that you have had with us however the only issue would be is that we did not make your bed when staying for 2 nights. Coronavirus has swept the world and we are interested in keeping our team and our guests as safe as possible during their visit. With this in mind, we will not automatically send the team into a bedroom which has been occupied by a guest for obvious reasons. As stated yesterday when I was with you, this could have been resolved if you had just spoken with us. I'm pleased that the rest of your stay was wonderful and hopefully your decision will change in the future. Kind Regards, Lee Kirtland Operations Manager

Booked a room for 1 night on the Dine and Stay deal. Having visited many times before, i am afraid this will be our last visit. On arrival I would have expected a warm welcome from the front reception desk but maybe I was expecting too much.
The room was quite small but adequate for our 1 night stay and at least it was clean.
The hotel was very busy but I was astonished with the number of people that were moving around the hotel without a face mask and not been challenged by the staff. Tables in the bar were slow to be cleared but we still had to ask for the table top to be cleaned with spray before we could sit down. I',m sorry but in these times, this should have been done as a matter of course
We had booked our meal earlier in the week for 8:15pm but when we turned up, we were turned away from the restaurant as there were no tables ready. We waited another 40 minutes before being seated even though we had booked !.
The food was the saving grace of the stay and the reason the hotel got a 2 rating and not a 1 rating. The food was wonderful and we ordered extras from the menu totalling £9 which we asked to added to the room
However when we had finished and started to leave, a waitress shouted at us across the restaurant that we hadn't paid and chased us to the exit !!! I asked why the waitress hadn't added these to our room bill which would be standard practice but she demanded payment there and then. My wife was so embarrassed, she left the restaurant and went to the room whilst I paid the £9 bill. I would expect this kind of treatment from a Faulty Towers sketch but not from this level of hotel.
So am I sorry but this Hotel will not be getting my custom ever again. Disgraceful

Responded 15 Sept 2020
Dear J9801IBandrews, Thank you for your review and my sincere apologies for any upset that we may have caused you. We've corresponded privately and hopefully reached a resolution. Your feedback does raise a few points which i think it would be helpful to acknowledge. On the subject of face masks, we challenge every guest when they arrive if they haven't got on a face mask, reminding them of the requirement to wear one and providing one if needed at no charge. At this stage anyone who states that they are subject to an exclusion from wearing a mask we have to accept at face value (no pun intended) After that we have prominent signage throughout the building and we also issue a guest Covid guidelines sheet to every arrival which again reiterates the requirement. As i hope you'll appreciate, there is only so much we can do to achieve adherence and we have to be fair to our front of house staff who it wouldn't be fair to make the police people of this. I walk around the hotel and over 90% of the people i pass are wearing masks and whilst frustrating it is a minority. Equally on a busy night we don;t always have a staff member who just happens to be standing in the area where a table is vacated and then immediately taken by others. Its not unreasonable to expect the next guests to ask for the table to be wiped after they have earmarked it as I believe was the case. We do our utmost of have more staff than previously for this reason but there is a limit. It does mention in the guidance and also referenced on check in that we are not opening accounts for guests. This is because the practice of doing this takes more time causing more queues in reception and involves handling the PDQ machine. We have PDQs is every single outlet and we ask guests to pay as they use the service hence pay in the bar doe drinks and in the restaurant for extras and drinks so it shouldn't have been a surprise and I'm sorry for any embarrassment caused which is never our intention. By paying as you go it means also that when it's time to leave you do not need to check out at reception thereby alleviating another queues and further contact points. I'm very sorry your table wasn't free on time and that you had to go for a drink and it took a little longer than hoped. We're working extra hard trying to carry on with business in the new guise and with 30% less tables in the restaurant so it does have some knock on challenges which usually we overcome better. My apologies again that our efforts didn't work for you on this occasion and hopefully in the future you will try us again when arrangements are returned to normal. Kind regards, Vince

We were looking forward to spend some time at this hotel and were hugely disappointed.
Overall the building is tired and needs some serious maintenance done.
The evening meal was pretty bad, i had to send the starter back as the salmon was frozen and grey, the second starter was even worse. The main course was impossible to stomach. The wine was good!
If you are using the SPA, bring your own bathrobe or be prepared to paid £7,5 to hire one.
The pool was dirty.
I would not recommend this place to anyone

Dear EDR20, I'm sorry you were disappointed. Its clear from the many other reviews that our restaurant is well regarded and I am sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your meals. Our Deluxe Rooms include robes though those opting for the best value rates they are not included but can be hired. We show this information on our website so I'm sorry you'd not realised. We believe in giving customers the best value deals and then they can decide which room type they want. Kind regards, Vince

I booked this stay for my Mams Christmas present and if anything I felt almost embarrassed by the whole night, first appearance of the hotel was nice as the building itself is beautiful! Katie on reception was lovely greeting us as well as apologising the next morning on behalf of the hotel but I felt expressing my concerns should not be made to her as she done her jobs worth and doesn’t deserve to be put in the same category as the other issues in the hotel.
We just had a basic twin room room booked which lived up to its basic title, not quite as beautiful as the rest of the building.
We visited the Spa and the man gave us the heads up that it was busy and he was right you couldn’t swing a cat in there. Was more a hazard than anything else, with towels left lying around and water covering the poolside. So we made a sharp exit to go back to the room to get sorted for dinner.
I can’t express how much dinner was an absolute disgrace. We waited 45 minutes for our drinks to turn up and that was only because we asked where they were when one of the waiters came to inform us that my Mams starter was suddenly not available after those 45 minutes. Shortly after a very bland salmon with warm salad and a bowl of watery soup appeared. We had ordered the sirloin steak which we were willing to pay the supplement for however it can only be described as chewing a rubber boot. Finally the pudding arrived and that was a not so nice dry sticky toffee pudding... not sure where the sticky or the toffee part was. After chasing one of many waiters to explain my concerns they used the excuse that it is very busy but, us as guests can’t be blamed for how the hotel and restaurant is managed. General staff in the restaurant were of no help and there was a lot of agitated customers in the hotels restaurant that evening. We were pleased for the meal to be over after nearly taking 2 hours to complete, after vacating the restaurant still feeling very hungry we left to call it a night feeling very deflated and I felt like it was no Christmas treat for my Mam to spoil her for a night away which she deserved.
During the night the rooms were very noisy! Myself got woke up several times by neighbouring parties shouting throughout and the beds are very uncomfortable and hard to sleep on, the room was also too warm where at one point we opened the windows to let some air in which made no difference.
So after a restless night we decided to give breakfast a go. Going off dinner the previous evening we weren’t expecting much and much isn’t what we got. It seemed everything in those metal trays came accompanied with a coating of fat.
We were happy to leave by then and scrapped the idea of going back into the spa as originally planned and happily handed over the room key to go home and rest.

Dear Adammcq183, Thank you for your review and whilst pleased that Katie dealt with you very well, I'm sorry that you had such a poor restaurant experience. It is true that we were serving over 200 meals so it was very busy and unfortunately an issue occurred which dramatically affected the kitchen leading to extremely long delays. We dealt with those customers affected proving free drinks or removing supplements as reasonable response to the events that unfolded. It is a very rare day that such an issue occurs and we tried to find the best solution at the time. I'm sorry that it affected your meal and if you haven't been offered something at the time then do get in touch with me. vince.johnson@redworthhalldurham.co.uk We have every many positive reviews of our food and service and I'd be keen to change your present view given the chance. My apologies, Vince

We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights from Friday to Monday over the bank holiday weekend with our 2 teenagers. This hotel is far from luxury which it claims to be on their website, it bears no resemblance to the photos posted on the website. Very dated decor with chips everywhere on doors and skirting boards.
We stayed in a family room which had a good layout however there were stains on the carpet, a light was broken, loose drawer handles and a shower which was very disappointing as it had very little power to the water flow. There were marks on the tiles in the bathroom which could easily have been wiped off by a competent housekeeper but we decided to leave these during the duration of the stay to see if they would be removed but they were still there 3 days later.
There were some very noisy guests at the hotel including one late afternoon constant drunken shouting and chanting, felt more like an 18-30s holiday than a family mini break in a so called luxury hotel.
We managed to get into the pool for one booked session. The pool area was good and we enjoyed our time in there, shame we couldn’t get booked in again for times convenient to us but was understandable due to Covid-19 and the pool being very popular. My husband used the gym which he said was acceptable.
Breakfast at the hotel was average but again not luxury. A very limited choice of breakfast items, no fresh fruit! A sheet had to be filled in at the table for your choice of breakfast. Every time we started eating our cereal our hot choice would be brought out and served, it would have been nice to at least have the time to eat our cereal first.
The breakfast staff were friendly and polite but the reception staff were miserable and unhelpful. I had to call reception as despite it being late in the afternoon our room had not been made up, the response I received to we have been out for the day and our room has not been made up was met with “it will” with no apology, a very rude and abrupt response. We had to leave the room as we didn’t want to be in there when housekeeping came, when we returned we had not been left enough towels, at this point I was beyond asking again.
We will not be returning to this hotel.

Our room didn't have a minibar don't know about the photos
i think it was £14.95, its a nice breakfast and fills you for the day. If you eat in the hotel a bar meal would be a better option than the restaurant. Meals are a la carte in restaurant and portions are small. Enjoy all the facilities its a great place
Our family room on the top floor was ok but lacked any proper air conditioning (other than opening the windows)- fine when we stayed in June but not probably during winter months. Also lacked fresh milk and no mini fridge.
At nearly £1000 for 4 nights for 3 adults full board a little on the expensive side, though on the plus side I must say the breakfasts were superb (self service) and the evening meals were tasty.
Headlam hall. Its a bit more expensive but its amazing. Another that i think its better is Slaley hall. That's if you're looking for spa hotels.
