After some very nice hiking in the surrounding area working up a healthy appetite, we came upon The Ship. It was a marvelous choice for a good noon meal. Between us, there was a very fine carrot and coriander soup, a grilled houllami cheese & wild rocket and other good stuff salad, and fish and chips. All good! The only...

Just back from our 6th stay at the Ship - with our two (bad) Manchester Terriers. Everyone there is super welcoming. The rooms are comfortable and clean. The food is always good and this time there were a few different things on the menu - we tried as many as possible- again just right. We really do feel the Ship...

Didn't stay here, but had a Friday evening meal with a fairly large group of fellow walkers. Generally a high standard but one or two dishes a bit ordinary. The home made Scotch eggs are excellent, less so the fish curry. The Ox cheeks were outstanding. Back again on Saturday afternoon to eat in the pub area, which is great,...

We walked from the sister inn in Westleton (8.5 miles all around) and had really good fish and chips. Nice setting. Great service. Dog welcome. Very popular, you need to book. Dunwich beach just down the road and worth a look.

We had lunch here after walking from its sister pub in Westleton, about 5 miles away. We were advised to book ahead as it was pretty much full. Turned out to be deservedly popular. Very friendly and attentive staff, nicely varied menu. We had lunch in the conservatory in the back, which was very pleasant. Fish and Chips were beautifully...

we had a lovely break at this chariming olde world inn on the suffolk coast and would recomend it highly in terms of the venue, the quality of the room, the superb food and the friendliness of the staff. As its on the suffolk heritage coast it was heavily populated by walkers and dog owners so its not ideal if you want...

This was our first visit and we were not disappointed. The pub had a great atmosphere and friendly staff. There was lots of choice on the menu as well as daily specials. We opted for the pork rillettes and homemade soup which was leek & potato, the starters were amazing and we couldn't wait for our main courses. I opted...

We had a one-night stay, but really wish it could have been longer. We arrived on a Friday evening and were greeted by friendly staff, one of whom showed us to our room (Maison Dieu) and made sure we were happy with the room. We then went to the bar for an evening meal. The wood burner was lit which...

We booked in for an overnight stay and evening meal in the bar. We had the All Saints room whist our friends were next door in Guildhall. The room, whilst a little creaky which was expected as this is an old inn, was very comfortable with crisp linen and a metal framed bed. The bathroom was superb with plenty of...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Once a haunt of smugglers, The Ship Inn isn't just a great place to eat, drink, relax and get away from it all – we like to think it's also part of a great story. Now a quiet, idyllic village surrounded by nature reserves, heathland and beach, only the romantic ruins of Dunwich monastery remain to hint at the fate of this once thriving medieval port claimed by the waves during a terrible storm. It's said you can still hear the peal of the church bells beneath the waves. While we can't guarantee that, there are certain, more earthly things we're always happy to provide… real ales, real food and a real fire. You will find: a great pub, home-cooked food in our restaurant, a cosy hotel with comfortable, traditionally furnished bedrooms, some with views across the sea or marshes. There is also an enormous garden dotted with fruit trees (including our 300 year old fig tree) and a beach that really is just a couple of minutes walk away. Whether you want to use it as a base to explore this wild and wonderful coastline, enjoy some of the best fish and chips on the Suffolk coast or simply indulge in a pint or two of Adnams, The Ship Inn at Dunwich extends the warmest of welcomes. ... more   less
