We stayed here in August 2023 because we got a good price deal on a suite for a special occasion but found it wanting in many ways….even though a good location. Well, call us silly, but on visiting Felixstow again we decided to give it another try due to good location and the fact that it is recently under new management. O.M.G….should not have bothered! Cheap but definitely not cheerful! Booked a superior room (thought that would be good) for £73 Inc breakfast. Got a grotty tired old room, small soft double bed, cold room, very basic and nothing like online photos. Nice bathroom and everywhere very clean though. Stayed in room 203. Could not understand what the receptionist was saying so just nodded, filled out form and took key card. Waited ages for someone to check us in for breakfast but food was OK. Will not be back…..gave it a second chance and it failed. Be warned!!! Oh, and there is a trip hazard as you enter the bathroom..a small step…just a lump of wood really…very dodgy if going into/leaving bathroom in my opinion!

In the past both my partner and I lived worked and went to school in Felixstowe ... Our entire family has stayed and eaten in the Orwell Hotel on many occasions... enjoying the good services this lovely old hotel had to offer ... We looked forward very much to returning to this hotel but were very Disappointed .. the bath surround had black mould all along the bottom edge and was falling apart. Having paid £21.00 for two breakfasts we were extremely disappointed as it lacked any effort hardly any choice.. a couple of dried up fried eggs no other choice of eggs mushrooms very unappealing the beans looked they had been dropped from a great height into the dish which was dirty all down the sides... I left the bacon as it was so dry... and the choice of the two pastries were the cheapest you could buy my partner did even bother to touch the breakfast apart from some toast .. When we complained we were told we could have a piece of cake .. which we declined! BE AWARE THE BREAKFAST IS AWFULL. Our local friends have told us that since the take over it has all rapidly declined .. Its such a shame

What a beautiful charming hotel. Full of character and amazing value. The Orwell Hotel is full of little surprises, and the decor is beautiful throughout. If your looking for a comfortable stay and surrounded by attentive staff who aim to please this is for you. Special thanks to Marianna and her team for making me feel at home. Loved this hotel and can't wait to return.

Very disappointed myself and a colleague had rooms booked for the week both costing the same. His room was very large with a modern decor, mine was much smaller and very old and tired in comparison. (Asbestos floor tiles in the bathroom and bright blue tiles should not be a standout feature!). I also had non working main light switch I'm my room and a switch that turns lights on behind the pillows on the bed ??? (which I happened to find one night at 2am) upstairs had a general musty smell and there was cobwebs visible in the corridors, whilst it was still close to halloween these were indeed the real deal. The only saving grace was the food was fairly decent and the bar staff seemed very pleasant. Oh and don't park under the trees in the car park unless you want condor sized bird waste covering nearly every inch of your vehicle!. Overall, your better off at a premier Inn.

Very dissapointed with our stay. Check in was 2pm and we arrived at 4pm and the room was extremely cold, my husband rang reception to be told the heating doesn't come on until 5pm. We went out for the evening and arrived back at 10.30pm and the room was still really cold. They brought a heater to the room and it didn't help so they had to bring another heater. It warmed up by 1am in the morning but still wasnt great throughout the night. It wasn't the cleanest either with toothpaste stains still around the sink on arrival, marked towel rails, and dirty toilet brush. We did tell them on check out but there was no offer of compensation. Wouldnt stay again in we visited Felixstowe.

Paid for this hotel via booking.com, arrived and they said "oh no, you need to pay again, booking.com haven't sent us the money. No payment now, no room" and as a young(ish) female alone at 10pm in the evening, I paid again. They said that booking.com would refund me within 12 days - fast forward 11 months since the booking.com payment and 4 months since the hotel reception payment and I am still completely out of pocket. Booking.com have received all my paper evidence (bank statements etc) and confirmed that after speaking with the hotel they will refund me directly. Since then however I have spent 4 - 6 weeks calling the hotel (don't call after 4pm they have a night crew on who say they cannot help you. Also definitely don't believe them when they tell you they'll call you back, make sure you have minutes because those calls only go one way) trying to obtain my refund. They are now saying they cannot see my booking.com reservation so aren't sure what they can do. So if you love calling hotels (they answer on about the 5th attempt, keep trying) and battling for your own money back for a honestly run down and slightly sad hotel room which you've paid for multiple times then I'd say go for it!! The breakfast was good, but definitely worth the expense or anguish. Good luck!

This is a grand old building sitting right at the entrance to Felixstowe town. The public rooms, the library, the lounges are beautiful with some incredible architectural details. The staff are very friendly and efficient too. However, the rooms are extremely dated. We paid extra for a “luxury double” and I struggle to see where the luxury was. I can’t remember last time I saw an actual double bed in a hotel room. There were tea and coffee making facilities, a decent shower, hairdryer etc. everything you’d expect and would still get in a standard double. But luxury? Absolutely not. I think this is a lovely hotel for afternoon tea and a bit of faded grandeur but I wouldn’t stay here again .

Having grown up in Felixstowe I was always aware of the Orwell as an iconic building in the town and having stayed here a couple of times and having rooms that were dated but passable, this stay rankled. We booked a luxury double and that description is so far from the truth it’s ridiculous. There are scuffs all over the paintwork, the shower head is full of limescale and the shower hose is black with mould. There were a group of people out on the 2nd floor landing for well over 2 hours just standing which felt oddly threatening. The breakfast was almost a disaster as when we arrived (well before 9am) it looked like they had closed until some fresh bread was brought, by which time we had made out meagre selection already. The room was the biggest disappointment however as it’s simply not “luxury” in the slightest. We will definitely stay at the Fludyers next time as they do actual luxury rooms.

So disappointed at the decline in personal service. Orwell had been our local for years. We’ve made friends with previous staff. Had some amazing memories made here. Always told others what a great hidden gem the hotel is. Went in today for a drink. No Sauvignon Blanc, so asked for Picpoul instead - it’s a good alternative. Despite the fridge being FULL of Picpoul was advised that it’s only available by the bottle. So the option was Pinot blush or nothing - anyone that enjoys wine knows this is not an alternative. Huge credit to the barman who was embarrassed by the policy, even went to ask his supervisor if he could sell me a glass of Picpoul. Came back so embarrassed that the answer was no. We left without buying our drinks and went somewhere else, with a very heavy heart. I don’t think we’ll be back. The previous staff would never have let this happen. A sad day.

Stayed here for one night in a luxury double room. Check in went smoothly and the receptionist was very polite. She asked us what time we would like breakfast and if we were dining there that night. We opted to dine out at Cafe Benecotto (which was a 5 minute walk away and was absolutely fabulous.) Our room was very comfortable and had recently been renovated. Walk in shower, lovely bed and ample room. However, you needed to be very strong to flush the toilet. Overall, we had a good nights sleep. Breakfast was disappointing. It was a buffet and everything was available but it just didn’t seem to have much love put in it. Coffee was help yourself flask dispenser - therefore coffee was pretty bland. The decor and furniture in the room is uninviting and again a bit of love put in the room could make it fabulous. The staff were all very friendly and polite. I have to say the hotel is fairly good value, nice room but I come away thinking it could do a little better.
