The Orwell Hotel boasts a prime location that guests appreciate, yet some travelers find the charm wanes when it comes to the rooms, described as outdated with issues like peeling wallpaper and worn furnishings. While the hotel offers satisfactory amenities and a comfortable stay for some, opinions on value are mixed—reasonable prices are overshadowed by experiences of poor service and lackluster meals.
Though the hotel features modern common areas, the guest rooms and varying levels of cleanliness indicate a need for refurbishment and more consistent upkeep.

Detailed Reviews
We visited this hotel for 3 nights in June having requested a King size bed. When we arrived we had been given a room on the second floor, at the end of the corridor. As we moved up and through the hotel, the decoration deteriorated and on arrival we found a large clean room with two single mattresses held together with the sheet. The view from the hotel was depressing as it was over the rear and looking onto the rubbish bins. The hotel was full on the first evening, but I would have thought that staying 3 nights, we would have been given a room more accessible and not with a view of the rubbish bins and the associated noises.
We chose to have breakfast in the hotel the first morning which when it arrived was well presented and good. However, it was expensive for what we received and having a milk allergy, I cannot eat cereals or yoghurt. I asked if there was any fruit but was informed there was none on the menu.
In the evening we returned and had a drink in the bar. While the Covid measures were excellent, the bar and lounge was depressingly bland. All the ceiling lights were on making the area look uninviting.
The rest of our stay we ate out. The following morning we had breakfast at a small cafe in the town and it was excellent and much cheaper.
We were suprised that even though we were staying 3 nights, we were told that we could not have any housekeeping visits except for replenishment items. I left towels and rubbish outside the door and asked for new towels etc. at reception.
The cleaning was up to standard on arrival and any request was promptly serviced.

My mum and I recently stayed at the Orwell Hotel, it was an early Birthday treat for my mum.
We found the room was neat and clean , ample for our needs
On booking in the receptionist was very nice , I booked for breakfast the following morning but decided against booking for the second morning, as neither of us are big morning eaters, and found the £9.95 each a little to much for what we actually had, the waitress seemed cold and unfriendly, pretty much left us alone after she had served my scrambled eggs and toast, I tried a few times to catch her attention as I would of like butter with my toast, perhaps even some jam !!
In other words we went out the following day , ordered breakfast more then we’d had the day before at the Orwell price and only paid £10 for the two of us .
Over all the room was good , but would not be having breakfast there again when I re book later in the year .

Stayed here over the bank holiday weekend. Perhaps due to everyone having staycations it cost more than usual, but we thought at almost £80 (without breakfast) it was seriously overpriced.
Small dark room, grimy bathroom, everything was shabby and tired. The walls had stains on them. The walls were paper thin and we could hear everything our neighbours were saying and doing!
I have to say that the beds were comfortable though and our room (closely overlooking another annexe of the hotel) was free of street noise.
The staff were helpful, especially the young waitress in the dining room.
We liked Felixstowe and the surrounding area.
However I wouldn’t return to this hotel and I couldn’t recommend it. Sorry.

Really disappointed in this hotel. I specifically booked the superior room as I wanted to make sure that we got a good night's sleep after what we knew was going to be a hectic day.
The room had a big radiator in it which was boxed-in with no thermostat, and it just blasted heat all night. It was so hot that we ended-up just laying on top of the bed rather than in it, and it was still so hot that we couldn't sleep.
You couldn't have the window open either because there was a main road outside which made it far too noisy.
I complained about this on check-out and the lady at the desk took my details and said that she would get the management to contact me. Guess what?.....not a dickybird from them.
If I'd booked a cheap room, I would have been less frustrated, but the fact that I deliberately paid extra to get an upgraded room to guarantee a good kip, really grates, and the fact that they couldn't be bothered to call me up to apologise just shows you that they simply don't care.

Called in here for cake on a Saturday afternoon with my partner and we were surprised to find out that they had gluten free scones. ( both cheese and fruit ) which was good for my partner. we decided to have a cream tea, and had two scones with jam and cream and plenty of tea and coffee, all for only £6 each which we think was excellent value and the service was also very good. Before leaving we decided to look around and noticed how dated the decor is. I bet this hotel was beautiful when it opened. The corridors are worn and very tired and I guess the rooms would be in the same state. One of the rooms we walked past smelled of cannabis, and we have since found out that homeless people are housed here. Not really the kind of place I want to stay, but cannot fault the food and service.

This was our first visit to Felixstowe and the warm hospitality of this hotel (conveniently situated opposite the train station) which my partner and I stayed at made us feel very welcome. Throughout our stay the staff proved to be helpful, attentive and professional, although our room was slightly outdated and ‘creepy’ looking, it was clean and comfortable. The breakfast tables were professionally organised in line with the Covid procedures and the full English breakfast served was excellent in terms of quality and quantity. I would particularly commend the friendly, professional (possibly Irish?) waiter who served us who had excellent customer service skills and provided an outstanding breakfast service! In conclusion, our visit here gave us a very good impression of Felixstowe and we wouldn’t hesitate in returning back here in the near future.

We live very close to The Orwell and are perpetually perplexed at why they are not making the most of location and demographic. We turned up for drinks in the garden and were thoroughly looked after by an affable and attentive member of staff-Chris. I wish The Orwell would do cocktails or tapas or something relevant that people like us would support. Staff today were top drawer. Go on, do more and we’d stay.

I'm sad to give this Hotel a bad review because the staff are first class. Its just a shame this Hotel lets them down! The Restaurant is clean bright and airy and breakfast on the two mornings was good. Now for the negatives! The first room we were allocated was awful, the bath had years and years and years of ingrained muck and grime all over it, the taps were slimy and the floor had a build up of dirt in all corners and some kind of powder behind the toilet. It was approx 10pm when we saw this and had decided that in the morning we would ask for a different room, but on pulling back the bed covers we were shocked to see they were heavily stained and not at all pleasant. We were never going to sleep in that bed! We didn't wait until the morning but went down to reception to ask for another room. The young lady on reception (Anna) was very helpful and got us another room (only one left as they were full) she also offered us a £20 refund. The second room was bigger but just as tired and grubby looking but the bedding was clean and so was the 'BATH'. That's where is stops! In the bathroom the window sills and frames were black with rotten mould, the toilet bowl was very badly stained. Around the bath panel was dirty. The blinds, net curtains and windows were dirty. And, to top it all we were left with second hand half used toilet roll made to look like a new one by folding the ends up as a triangle! This toilet roll would have been handled by the previous guests and should have been removed from the room! What about double wiping???! New rolls should be given to each new guest-disgusting! I wonder if the management of this Hotel is aware of the state of these rooms that are being rented out to the public! If not then they should be! Thankfully the weather was great so we didn't spend that much time in the room. On checking out I mentioned the state of the rooms and was told its because of 'COVID'.... NO IT IS NOT!!!! Covid may be responsible for not having new bathrooms installed and rooms upgraded but bad management and very bad housekeeping are responsible for the years of filth in the two rooms we had! Its such a shame about the rooms because the Hotel is in a great location and would have been quite grand in its day and wear and tear is expected in a Hotel of this age! But regardless of its age and price it should be at least clean! Whoever manages this Hotel needs to get their act together and get housekeeping sorted!

The Orwell hotel is an impressive building. It is sited ideally for the town and seafront with easy access to the A14. With friendly staff both reception and room cleaning staff . Now the bad bit ,I was given a room in the extension not the 18th C building which may be better? My room was clean and tidy however it was little dated and shabby. The curtains both net and outer were ripped and water stained . The bathroom although spacious had broken tiles and a very retro feel . The T and Coffee making facilities are on a shelf under the TV as the only plug in the room is there . Charging phones etc therefore is awkward . The bed is comfortable however it’s small if your a couple .The walls are very thin and now know all my neighbours business so the sleep wasn’t perfect. To sun up it’s ok but for the price in hindsight I’d have been more cozy in s travel lodge .

Don't know, ours was included in the price of the room. It was perfectly acceptable, but I wouldn't pay for it as an extra.
Not noticeable expensive but the bar is a little soulless so we tended to eat out
Not certain for tea perhaps not certain on staying
check in 2 pm check in 11 am at top of bent hill lovely place called ruby's great food !
