Detailed Reviews
I don’t normally write reviews, but I was inclined to on this occasion.
I had just booked 2 nights at Southwold campsite, to stay in our VW Campervan. I then read the reviews regarding the dated facilities and started to worry slightly.
I needn’t have... upon arrival we soon found the facilities to be just fine. Very clean, and I would not say overly dated... I’ve stayed on campsites with worse that’s for sure. There were 4 ladies toilet cubicles open (2 closed for social distancing) and 4 sinks, which was adequate. Additional portaloos dotted around obviously aim to ease the burden during busy times. It’s easy to see that the site could be busy in summer, but they’ve obviously tried to offer alternatives whilst working in difficult times. A Haven site I recently visited had 1 male cubicle for 30 pitches..so Southwold have performed better here.
(Only slight annoyance that ladies loos cleaned at 9am on Sunday, which I’d say is peak time for visitors wanting to use the facilities so could have been better timed)
There had been quite a lot of rain in the days before we arrived, so our original pitch was waterlogged. The very helpful receptionist called to offer us an alternative pitch, which worked out just fine for us.
The location is spot on to explore all parts of Southwold, and we enjoyed the walk over to walberswick despite the weather which wasn’t overly kind. Very close to a great couple of fish and chip takeaways and a selection of great pubs nearby. All in all a great weekend.

I managed to get a last minute booking at the site last month but had to move every day, despite there being empty pitches. Other campers had had the same issue. The manager was far from friendly and disorganised. Surely the loo block could have been finished before peak season when prices shot up to £37.50 a night for a basic pitch? The assistant on the phone booking service was charming but the booking system is archaic. It is a great location but seems to be losing its charm, with tents crammed in with motor homes and caravans.

This site is run by the local council and it shows - the location is good, next to the harbour and beach and a short walk into town but at £32 for one man and a hiking tent and no electric it is well overpriced although due to a lack of competion they get away with it much of the time. Prices of up to £43.25 are excessive. However, it was much less than half full when a similar, but cheaper, coastal site the night before was almost full. The facilities are adequate but dated in places although the new shower block under construction should be a big improvement. The site generally is faded and only maintained to a basic standard. I'd suggest the council/site operator have a look at other similar campsites to see what the standard is nowadays in terms of pricing, discounts for solo travellers and maintenance. The quirky webite could also do with and upgrade. Finally, the staff were friendly and helpful although there doesn't seem to be anyone around after about 5pm.

If the site were located in a less sought after location and operated in exactly the same way it would surely be empty.
We paid £23.84 a night for a non electric pitch.
The toilet and shower facilities are basic and it was by far the most expensive site on a touring holiday offering the worst value for money by some distance.

Southwold is a beautiful town to escape to with an incredible beach, lovely restaurants, ample pubs, lovely local independent shops to support, with some great local walks, tours and attractions.
During peak season holiday home rentals are expensive and the campsite is a great alternative. It is basic but has everything you need. Warm showers, clean toilets, washing up and water facilities, and plenty of space for activities around your tent. It isn't a holiday park. Its a campsite, and a wonderful friendly one. Its so nice to have a chorus of mornings and hellos as you walk through the site to the facilities, most visitors are very chatty and helpful, and have lots of local knowledge and useful tips for the area.
The staff are the friendliest bunch, always say hello with a wave, and quick to help if you have a query. They really care about the site, its maintained very well.
It isnt glamping unless you make it glamping, you need to be prepared and pack well.
Right next to the harbour and beach you will wake and fall asleep to the sound of the sea. Pure escapism and bliss.

Wonderful spot next to the beach. Campsite is basic but toilet block and showers were spotless and cleaned several times during the day. Appreciated the hot water in the showers. Good washing facilities and friendly staff, working hard to make the site COVID safe. Well done to the staff!

Stayed here for 2 nights recently, great location literally straight across the road from the gorgeous beach. Short walk into Southwold centre. Receptionist was really friendly and directed us to our pitch which was a great size 👍🏻 2 shower/toilet blocks however one is only for static caravan users only and has coded access, which was disappointing as the other block was disgusting. Showers looked like something from prison break and we’re dirty. There was also a massive hole in the ceiling. The toilets were average at best and most of these and the sinks were taped off and not in use, this included all the hairdryers in both blocks. The other unit which we managed to get access to was a lot nicer, cleaner and had better facilities. Wouldn’t visit here again as you’re basically penalised with crap facilities for being a camper which is totally unfair. Understand if people who own the static caravans might not want to share with campers who come and go but the camping facilities need major improvement and they were grim.

We love Southwold&visit this site every year without any previous issues.
On arrival we noticed the newish toilet block has been closed off to everyone except owners! You are being penalised for either touring or camping which in todays world is unacceptable.
Two showers&two toilets for the rest of the campsite which is ridiculous when the site is full.
Inconsiderate people smashing bottles in the bins early in the mornings, dogs barking and a family group of over 10 nearby in one tent (yes all in one tent) with feral unruly
kids screaming&screeching-we left early for a bit of peace!
Visitors allowed on site, no covid guidelines applying to groups which made us feel unsafe.
Will avoid at all costs as sadly seriously gone downhill since last year.

Nearly £40 per night with electric in March. When we arrived the lady informed us the shower block on our patch was out of order as they were waiting for repairs. The new toilets, also near us were out of order too. This entailed a longer walk through mud to get to the facilities. The whole site is tired. Pot holes, waterlogged pitches, muddy after rain. At the very least we have expected to be offered a discount for inconvenience but weren’t. Overall, probably will not revisit. The location is good, the access is good and site, in March, was quiet. East Suffolk Council, if you’re serious about charging top end fees then you must invest in maintenance and quality of facilities.

We have stayed at the site on a number of occasions and love its proximity to Blackshore. This was a special visit for family reasons, to remember my late Father in Law and overall we had a good time. The weather was amazing, who'd have thought we'd have 30+ degrees in September? The new toilet block is a great addition, love the combined loo/basin/shower cubicles. Our pitch was big enough for our motorhome and each pitch is very clearly marked to indicate which side is your 'extra bit of grass'. The only downside was having to listen to 2 of the staff having a foul mouthed diatribe as they prepared to go and clean the loos. We had family visiting us and my toes curled at the loud and inappropriate language used. Children were playing nearby and will have learnt a new vocabulary!
