Detailed Reviews
I was with friends for a 3 night stay at Chalk Farm Hotel in Willingdon. The staff couldn't be more helpful, very friendly patient and careful to observe all the covid precautions. The rooms are charming in this 300 year old hotel, all had interesting features and are themed around George Orwell's Animal Farm.
The building is nestled in the South Downs with a track up onto the hills right beside the hotel
The breakfasts are delicious and, again, the chef could not do enough for us. Light lunches were also available at a reasonable cost
I recommend this wonderful little hotel for a quiet, quirky interesting break on the Downs

+1
The hotel may not be to everyone’s taste, but we quite liked it, it is set on a farm with pretty impressive views all around.
There was room to pack and it was a good spot for us as we were visiting family in Eastbourne.
I try to rate with the cost of room in mind and feel it represented value. We booked with breakfast.
The greeting was warm and friendly on our arrival and we were given room 9. This was up and was very much an attic style room with low ceilings. This is part of the reason this did not achieve a five star review. The room was clean and spacious but because of the slopes ceilings it did mean a bit of mild contortion was required for parts of the room and the bathroom. That said it was serviceable and would not necessarily stop us staying again. I think if you were under 6ft you would probably be less effected as my wife was more comfortable with the height.
The shower was a bit cramped and pressure was average at best but you were able to have a good wash. From the room the views were good of both the farm and the surrounding area.
We arrived a bit late so a lot of the local eateries and pubs had closed for food or were due to. As such we ordered a pizza. Upon speaking to reception I explained we had ordered food and asked if there was anywhere they would prefer us to eat rather to an eating on our room. It was suggested we could use the bar area (which we did) which was nice and far more comfortable. It was a nice gesture as the bar was not open at the i time.
I would also say the breakfast was very good! Full English was a delight.
We would and probably will stay again, I’m sure there are some great walks in the area based on what we could see and it would have been nice to see a bit more of the farm had we not arrived late and then had to head off.

Hello, Thank you so much for taking the time to review our hotel. If you book with us again, maybe try to book room 8. It is a lovely double room with the highest ceilings. The original part of the hotel was built in 1609 so a lot of low ceilings and beams around. We are very glad you enjoyed your stay.

Stayed hear for one night, with my wife and son and can honestly give it 5🌟. The rooms are very clean, dust free and the beds were spotless. My only one criticism and it's probably nit picking is I personally needed more pillows. These might have been available if I asked(which I didn't).
The shower, toilet and sink was spotless. We had plenty of towels and they too were spotlessly white and fluffy.
There was more than enough tea and coffee in the room, and I especially enjoyed the free biscuits provided.
I personally liked the building and rooms. It's an old farm house and is a grade 2 listed building which gives it so much character. I wonder how many people have passed through its doors and what tales the walls have?
The staff from our arrival and departure could not be more friendly, courteous, accommodating and helpful.
They put my son's lactose free milk and butter in there fridge and supplied it when we needed it.
Now for the breakfast. Wow!
Plenty of tea and coffee, cereal, yoghurt, toast, baccon/sausage sandwiches and a big full English breakfast.
Sorry for the long review but when we come down again we will be staying at Chalk Farm.

Have lived locally for many years and have only recently become aware of Chalk Farm - what a beautiful setting. On arrival I was warmly greeted and shown into the bar area where I had arranged to meet my daughter. Delicious lunch was freshly cooked to order and we were served by a charming member of staff. On my way in , I noticed that there is also a nursery behind the hotel and I asked if it would be possible to have a look. One of the team kindly took me there and gave me a guided tour - lots of plants for sale and handy at this time of year to know that they sell Christmas trees!
The atmosphere in this place is a very happy one which is lovely to witness . Will definitely return

I attended a 60th birthday party here 13/8/2022 it was the worse experience I have ever had at a hotel, Live Music was booked and agreed in the garden. between 4pm and 8pm at 7pm the band was told to play quieter?? disco booked for the evening and agreed until 10pm bear in mind the temperature on this day we were not allowed to have a door or window open the room was like an oven, everyone was outside as no doors and windows open music was only being enjoyed by the DJ what a waste of money. At 10 o clock all guests that were not staying in the hotel that night must leave now the security started tipping the guests out of their chairs there was no advance notice given for this to happen guests that had just purchased drinks had to just leave them and residents must go indoors ?? I am a 70-year-old disabled person it felt like I was being told I must go to bed at 10 pm. we had six of the 8 rooms booked the security carried on moving us indoors. moving chairs and tables around. I have worked in the Hotel business for 50 odd years, owned and run my own Hotel for 10 of those years, and in all that time I have never seen these things happen, or have been treated like that. The bedrooms all need renovation. and updating.

Hello, Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the party. We are based in a residential area and respecting our neighbours is important to us. Unfortunately the band was playing a bit too loud. Due to our license we are not allowed to have windows and doors open while entertainment is playing past 8pm. I understand this wasn't ideal during a heatwave, but unfortunately we are not able to break our licencing terms. It was agreed the night would end at 10pm prior to the event and you were able to finish your drinks before leaving. Again due to our licensing we are not able to have people chatting and drinking in the garden past a certain time. Thanks for taking the time to review. We have taken your comments onboard.

Me and my friend stayed here for a few nights as we were visting Eastbourne.
The hotel is nice, basic but nice
The guy who works behind reception was really great host and very helpful.
We stayed in a family room which had a double bed and 2 single beds it was very spacious but a very small ensuite. The whole room is on a wonk/slant when you sit on the toilet you slide into the shower wall.
Our only issues whilst here was the breakfast. It wasnt very good, small portions, low quality ingredients and very greasy everything tastes of oil. I wouldnt recommend paying the extra for the breakfast package. We only ate the breakfast once and left without breakfast in our last day snd got it somewhere else.

My husband & I have just come back from 1 night here. I checked the reviews & they seemed positive also pictures of farm looked idyllic. It was the worst place we have ever been too & in 35 yrs we have been to all sorts. First impressions were not like the website at all, the place is very run down & I would call it a learning disability centre with rooms to rent so they can keep the charity going. We asked to book a meal & were told we haven’t had a restaurant in years! One review mentioned going their for Xmas 2019. We asked to go to bar but were told they have no bar we can have drinks brought to room or outside, we looked in to what was the bar & it is a conference room with small bar in corner very unwelcoming. Then the rooms! Broken lock on door, No headboards no valance sheets generally run down. We asked the night Porter later if we could have a drink in our room & he said no not tonight! He was sitting at reception with feet on desk anorak over him & on the phone to friend😳 he asked what time we would be down for breakfast so we said it depends when we wake which he laughed at , very strange. In the morning we came down for breakfast to see the night Porter was the chef (no whites on) he had not washed & been up sitting in chair all night. We made quick exit. The red lion pub & wheatsheaf were fantastic lovely food great atmosphere with locals. I have never written a review before but do not want anyone else to be as excited as we were then to be disappointed. Think pics will show the true Chalk Farm. I have spoken to manager Tina she says they have never had headboards but they have one in pic of the room she also says not allowed valance sheets because of COVID rules absolutely not true.

The room was very much in need of refurbishment and did not look at all like the photos on the website. The entrance door to the room had an asbestos sticker on it which of itself is not an issue. However, there were multiple holes drilled in the door which could have dislodged the fibres - rather concerning. Also, we could not log on to the WiFi.

Stayed here for 2 nights, beautiful location, lovely clean room. Ensuite however was very small and water pressure was rubbish making having a shower difficult.
Lovely Thai restaurant 5 min walk away.
We had booked and paid for our stayed through booking.com so was hugely surprised when we got asked to pay again on checkout. When stated that we had paid through booking.com we were asked to display proof!! When proof was obviously shown by us, no apology was made, other than ok as a comment.
Very disappointed.

Bournemouth, United Kingdom31 contributions41 helpful votesDo you have on-site parking?
Yes they do have car parking on the side, as it's a working farm and nursery too, sometimes it can be muddy. There is usually parking on the road outside as well. Access from car park via a few steps with hand rails plus there is a gently sloping path to get up to restaurant just to the right of the steps.
There are 8 en-suite bedrooms - they have their own website, I can't put the link on here as TA don't allow them :(
They also have some information about weddings on there but do give the manager, Rachel, a phone call on 01323 503800 as she will do everything she can to make your wedding perfect :)
Hi
Ring in the morning, after 9am when Rachael will be there - she's the manageress and is extremely friendly and helpful.
