We had a very good afternoon tea here. We would really recommend it. Everything we ate was delicious and the service was great too, very polite and efficient. One of our family had the vegan afternoon tea as well and the kitchen did brilliantly with this. All the cakes were moist and tasty, the scones warm and fresh, and every sandwich full with filling and yummy. Thank you to this hotel for such a lovely afternoon tea.

Lovely stay here. My room was clean and comfy with nice linen and a good duvet. The bar was very welcoming to us in the evening which is not always the case as we tend to arrive late. It was a good breakfast, made extra special by the delightful Chris who honestly couldn’t do enough for us. Our only gripe, no granola, stewed fruits or green yoghurt. Rice -crispies just don’t cut it I’m afraid!

Booked Sunday lunch for 7 adults and 1 child! The food and service was amazing and we all said this is a hidden gem! The menu was excellent with all dishes cooked on point and very well presented! Big up to the Chef and the front of house team, a 5 star experience.

Shocked that a trained member of staff would bring out a warm glass of white ,knowing that it hasn't been in the fridge yet. She did kindly bring out an alternative but sadly this was also warm and not nice. Most shockingly however, was my wife ordered a gluten free starter that came with fully gluten bread!!. Absolutely shocking in this day and age,clearly the staff are not following the necessary food safety standards. We wouldn't have minded so much but it seemed that no one seemed even phased by the service. Won't be coming back anytime soon.

Thank you for your review and we are worried to hear you are worrying. We have recently just updated our entire wine list and were stocking new wines on a quiet Sunday evening. It is unfortunate that this took place whilst you were visiting us, but it is purely down to bad luck. I understand the bartender on duty, provided you with a colder, refrigerated wine from our old wine list later and this was provided to you for free. The first wine you were served had been in the fridge for at least an hour, but perhaps was not entirely chilled yet. We are pleased you benefited from a complimentary glass of wine. Please do inform our team of any dietary requirements or allergies on the day and also when making the booking. It is very important we are made aware. On the allergies and dietaries section within your booking reservation you have written 'none'. We can confirm that all front of house team members and the kitchen brigade have completed both Level 2 Food Safety & Hygiene and Food Allergy Awareness modules. We hope you feel less worried in the future and are able to return.

We visited the hotel for afternoon tea. The service was excellent, very helpful staff and the afternoon tea was very good. I would thoroughly recommend for a chilled afternoon for a catch up with friends or family.

Over the last 2 months I have been spending 2 nights a week at the County and I am back again next week. I love the place. The rooms are quaint and every room is different. They are well presented and serviced every day. But the best of the hotel by far is the staff. They are friendly and greet everyone with old fashioned respect and are always there to help. To me it is the staff that makes the hotel and why I keep going back. A note about the restaurant, it is rather good, ok I will admit I do not eat there all the time but mostly on my first night I will pop in. I am vegetarian (pescatarian) and they have a good selection of dishes and not the usual token meals but well created and tasty. Lastly the location, it is within easy distance to the main shopping and restaurants. In the centre of the city. There is parking (£9 a day) that in Chelmsford that is very useful. My work contract means I will be Chelmsford for a at least a few months yet and I will be staying at the County each week. Jessica …

Stayed in room in new 'cottage' annexes. Room functional and clean however the tv had no access to any free channels could only use if you had your own netflix account etc. Which i haven't. Was on ground floor looked out on carpark and clear glass no net curtain so you are rather exposed to anyone using car park unless you pull the curtains. Shower tray was a little too shallow with only shower curtain so no real way of stoppping water going over floor. Probably just teething troubles as new build but might need tweeking

On booking, there is a full description with regards to the televisions being smart TV's without Freeview. We do also have Standard Single Rooms in the main hotel, at a slightly higher price, which may be more suitable for you on you next stay.

We stayed here ahead of a family funeral in Chemsford and can't praise the staff highly enough. They went over and above to help us (even helping with printing a reading I'd forgotten to print). The room was clean and functional with a clean bathroom and hot shower/bath. Plus there was complimentary water and fresh milk for tea/coffee in the rooms. We didn't eat in the restaurant but food looked good. We stopped for coffee in the bar and it was lovely. All in all a good nights sleep and would definitely return.
