Stayed for two nights while visiting family in the area. The hotel is located on the outskirts of Clacton on Sea adjacent a retail park, too far to walk into town so a car is needed, however it does provide great access to the road network for visiting local attractions. There is a large free car with two Pod Point electric vehicle chargers, unfortunately an error in bay markings as resulted in one of the usable charging bays being allocated for disabled persons.

The hotel is run like a motel with only no full time reception, guests ring a bell and a member of staff comes across from the adjacent pub, when we arrived a staff member came over immediately. Check out is simple with a box for electronic room keys being in the reception.

Throughout the corridors and at every fire door there are pest control boxes, however unlike other reviewers we did not actually see any bottles or other insects.

Rooms were a good size, storage for clothes was limited to an open hanging rail, adequate for a night or two, but not ideal for longer stays. Bed was a king size and was very comfortable with decent pillows, the room had good quality blackout curtains, so we had a good night sleep. The bedside plugs include USB charging points, a nice feature that other hotels should also provide.

The bathroom was well presented with good lighting and over bath shower, the water pressure from the shower was a little low but functional. At night the room was quiet with no road noise.

The optional breakfast was available in the adjacent Smugglers Cove pub a short walk across the car park. Breakfast was a mix of buffet style continental and table served hot food, tables were clean however with the risk of COVID we were a little concerned that all diners were handling the milk jug handle and tongs for the bread. Cooked breakfast was very nice.

We also had a meal in the pub one evening, staff were accommodating and friendly but appeared to be under pressure rushing around, food was reasonably priced although the quality of food was okay and served hot,

Overall we enjoyed our stay and would happily come again for a short one or two night stay.

I went to The Smugglers Cove at Clacton with six friends on the first Saturday evening after re-opening after the Carona virus lockdown closure. I have been been here several times before as well. We was greeted at the door and taken to our reserved table which i had booked online the week before. We was then served for the rest of our visit by a very friendly and helpful waitress named Fiona. After the long shutdown period and with all the new regulations to deal with, it cannot have be easy for the staff. Everything has to be ordered from the table as everywhere else at this time. The table service was really good and our drinks and food orders were taken in a friendly and helpful manner. We all had a variety of main courses including Scampi, Gammon steak and lasagna . All were really nice and everyone enjoyed their meal. I had the chocolate melt in the middle and ice cream for dessert which was also really nice. Prices are average for a chain restaurant like this and the location of this site is easy to get to and find and has a hotel next door owned by the same group. I can definitely recommend this place as a friendly relaxed place to eat and drink and will be going back again regularly .

We visited here for the first time, we have stayed at the hotel at Ipswich before . Booked direct so got 20 per cent discount on food . Went in the restaurant area , clear signs for entry ,greeted by a member of staff who took your details for health and safety . Advised to select a menu and then use the santizer. Was then taken to a table where a waitress took the order, then brought drinks and change over. Noted anyone leaving a table after use , table was cleared and cleaned for next customers. Clear signs if you went outside for a smoke or vape .Arrows to the toilet too plus santizer at every sink, but some sinks covered for social distancing . This is very well thought out and alot of effort has been made for public safety . Had an enjoyable meal good value too . Hotel again was clean , you were given tea , coffee etc in a paper bag again for safety . Had a comfortable night and a lovely breakfast for two for seven pound. Cannot fault the stay , polite staff .Clearly a very well dedicated team and manager.

I paid 96 eur including only the small continental breakfast. If you ask me if this is a bargain, my answer is a solid no. This place is just OK, very basic and well outside town, sorrounded by a Tesco and a Pizza Hut. At least free parking but only one charging spot for electric car. When I was there it was taken, good I didn’t have to use it. Anyway what put me off was that in my room the heating/AC didn’t work with a big “RESET” on the screen and yet they gave the room to me. i asked the staff to turn it on and then off when room was warmer, but for evening and the night, no choice. Nobody even thought to come and fix it. When you pay 100 GBP I would like to have to option to turn on/off the heating on my own, I don’t I am asking too much

Hi Bridgerobe, we appreciate your honest review. We set a high standard for ourselves, so we are disappointed to hear that your experience with us was not a positive one. You can control the ac/heating panel from your room or the reception has the main control panel and would have been more than happy to assist you. Kind regards Smugglers Cove

I have just spent several months at Smugglers Cove while waiting to move house. From the beginning I was made welcome and every member of staff went above and beyond what I have experienced in any other hotel and restaurant. They were friendly and helpful and always served me with a smile. The food was good value for money and there was a wide variety of dishes, although I kept coming back to the carvery! I can't single anyone out as all the staff were lovely: the hotel reception and housekeeping, the chefs and bar staff, the managers and all the waiters and waitresses. A big thank you to you all and I will be coming back for meals, so save my table please! Best wishes, Jennie.

Good afternoon, we came alone this afternoon at 2pm 16.08.21 on arrival we had to wait a long time to get a drink. Eventually after being serve me and my partner ordered two carvery dinners. They were very low on meats so we inquired on new meats which they brought out. My partner got an all beef roast dinner now when she sat down and carved into the meat we was greted with a horrible off smell. She continued to taste it and it was clearly gone off. She did call a member of staff over which they then supplied her with some more beef from the same joint which again tasted and smelt off. The chef they took a piece of meat and tried it and told us that it smelt funny and tasted off. They replaced the meat on the carvery but didn't bother to come and tell us about this. We no this as we was sat right in front of the carvery. The service was absolutely terrible and the food should have a look into. One of the worst experiences I've ever had especially for a roast dinner. What a shame

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel. Our room was spacious, well designed with a good size table, wardrobe, plenty of room for our luggage. Bathroom with bath and good shower over bath. Lighting in bathroom excellent. Tea/coffee making facilities, with biscuits much appreciated. Lovely thick towels. Everything very clean. Hair dryer provided. Very quiet, comfortable king size bed, very good night sleep. The only issue we had was with the air conditioning: we were unable to turn it off or increase the temperature for some reason, which meant the room was a little too chilly for our liking (Room 110). It was great having the restaurant next door, across the carpark but if we may make a suggestion, it would be helpful to be able to access it directly on the hotel side, as people with mobility issues have a long walk round to the front door.

We thoroughly recommend this hotel and will definitely stay there again on our next visit to Clacton.

We stayed at this hotel as it was not far from the seaside and near to smugglers cove restaurant. The room was booked through booking.com and we were in a accessible room with a double bed and a wet room low bath and shower were separate. The room was clean and tidy. The staff are friendly and are only on certain times.

Stayed for 3 nights after Christmas and booked a family room. The room was on the ground floor overlooking the car park near to the entrance of the hotel. We had 3 awful nights sleep. The beds were comfy and the room spacious and semi-clean however we could hear the people above us stomping around every night. The floors are flimsy and you could hear people walking up and down the corridors on the 1st floor. It literally sounds as if there is a heard of elephants walking on top of you in the room above. The hotel is not family friendly at all, with people coming into the car park and hotel until 3am in the morning. It may be cheap but its definitely not cheerful when you have a toddler and you are trying to get a good night sleep.

We was greeted by Amanda upon arrival and was told we were 20 mins early, I asked if we could have a ground floor room at the rear of the building, she said she would do her best. She also asked if we wanted to eat in the restaurant opposite because they would book a table and arranged all that for us too. We decided to have a few drinks opposite in the restaurant while we waited. When we returned about an hour later she informed us that our ground floor, rear situated room was ready, this lady really couldn’t do enough for us.
We checked in and 10 minutes later she came to our room and asked if everything was ok, it was a lovely room. Clean, quiet, cool with the A/C, a lovely view and we had a great nights sleep.
Thank you Amanda.
