Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

First time at the pub, was told by a friend to go there as this was such a lovely place to eat. Was very impressed with the food and service. The location was great. Only 25 mins drive from home. The pub was really cosy inside, very welcoming. Will be coming back.

Apologies for the late review we thought we had completed this on our return. We booked a room for two nights whilst visiting family. This a regular trip we make every year but our first time of staying here. On arrival, shortly after the allocated check in time, we were greeted by a young lady at reception who showed us to our room - The Anne Boleyn suite. The room was spacious, clean and cosy with a very comfortable bed and a fantastic bathroom. We both slept well with no disturbance from neighbours or guests in the bar n restaurant downstairs. We didn’t eat here or try breakfast as it wasn’t included in our cost. We would definitely return. Thank you for a lovely stay.

We were planning to meet up with some friends in Essex and decided to make it an overnight stay so we could have a few drinks, we looked for the nearest Hotel to where we were meeting and found an absolute golden treasure with The Bell Hotel in Horndon on the Hill Essex, The Hotel is very cleverly set out with the Bell Pub a beautiful cosy country pub with a lovely garden area for enjoying the last of the summer days while sampling a couple of beers, the reception for the Hotel is located next to the Pub, with a communal yard, the reception staff were very welcoming, pleasant and professional, explaining the hotel rooms are a few building further down and called the Ostlers, which is also where you can get an amazing breakfast if required, the lady on reception physically took us to our room, even asking if we needed help with our luggage, The room was nothing short of amazing, it is advertised as a large cosy double room, which does not do it anywhere near justice, it certainly is cosy but every details is catered for, very spacious, the bathroom has to be seen to be believed, it is the largest bathroom I have ever had with a hotel room, set out as a gorgeous toilet shower room. All the staff we interacted with from receptionist, to bar staff to breakfast serving staff, were all so pleasant, polite, accommodating, very tentative while being totally professional. Our thanks go to all the staff and Management who make The Bell Hotel the success that it is as you have got everything right, we will be back. One happy customer Kevin.

Oops this isn’t us. We are working on having this remixed. We don’t have wooden bed frames. Our breakfast menu is well priced like local eateries. Our full English is £10.95.

We returned back to the Bell after a few previous visits and once again were not disappointed. This pub/restaurant is genuinely one of mg favourite places to eat. The food is exceptional, the staff were brilliant, including all the trainees and we had a wonderful evening. Thanks again, we will be back!!

Had the most amazing meal here with friends today. The food and service were outstanding, we will definitely return. The gnocchi was fabulous and my husband said the venison was the best he’s ever had. Thank you, we will see you again!

Firstly the reason I have given 2 stars, the room and bathroom were clean. The reasons I couldn't give a higher rating. The road noise is horrendous from groups of well oiled people been noisy, to modified cars racing up and down the road. I later found out that the village is used as a shortcut. The window in the room rattled all night long for some unknown reason. The noise that came through the ceiling from the people upstairs was as though we had giants above us. Noise from the hallway of people been loud and slamming doors. This all led to the worst nights sleep I have ever had staying away from home. Which somewhat spoiled the following day for an event I was taking part in being so tired. We decided to check out a day early and go home rather than have another rotten nights sleep. Upon checking out we gave our reasons to reception who said they would pass this back to management. I would advise people when booking to query if the room is roadside or to the rear of the property.

We are so sorry you didn't have a peaceful time as you had hoped, or we would for you. There was some road works on a A road near by and over a period of a week this was used courtesy of google maps as a shortcut. That has now been fixed and we are back to our village ways.

We recently visited the beautiful Bell-Inn for a meal and stay. We are lucky to live in the beautiful village so decided to treat ourselves whilst the children were away with their Grandparents. We checked into our room, HighLIfe which is located in the High House, the room was spacious, spotlessly clean, and beautiful. We then went to dinner in the Bell where we had the most amazing meal and drinks. Next morning, breakfast was served in The Ostlers which again was just the start to the day we needed. I cannot recommend this place enough and are extremely grateful to have this on our doorstep. The staff throughout the whole place are amazing. Thank you so much.

We stayed here for one night before joining a cruise ship in Tilbury. The Inn is beautifully authentic, as an 18th century property should be, very quiet rooms, nicely appointed and clean. Absolutely nothing wrong with the accommodation, staff were a bit robotic and I can’t say over friendly. But we decided to eat in the restaurant, which in hindsight was a mistake, it was over fussy, but without the skills it seems to attempt that menu. We found the food greasy, undercooked and small portions for the expensive price, we complained to the staff, and all we got was that they’d inform the chef.? So if you stay here it’s very good, but try walking up the road to The Swan to eat.
