I was a little uneasy about staying here after reading a few of the recent reviews but I can honestly say it is first class. We are currently staying at Greenwoods; the staff are very friendly and helpful, the bedroom is gorgeous with lovely decor and the bed is very comfortable. I had a marvellous back massage by Sky followed by a swim in the pool. The pool and changing areas were spotless and the pool is a great size for swimming lengths. The food is also fab. I can’t recommend this hotel enough. Thank you Greenwoods.

This is a quirky manor house hotel with spa, set in well manicured and well maintained grounds, there is plenty of car parking. We arrived early and wanted to watch the Grand Prix, the staff set up the TV for us, took our luggage to our room and we ordered sandwiches and cakes, which were excellent.
The hotel was busy with clients having Sunday lunch and afternoon tea (the tea looked spectacular) It is clearly a popular destination for locals, hen parties and birthday celebrations, which mean it can be noisy.
Our bedroom was good, however we had to ask for an additional hand towel (only 1 provided) and 1 small bottle of shampoo and conditioner. Extras were provided promptly on request.
Our package included dinner, bed & breakfast, and probably one of the few downsides was the limited choice in the restaurant. Portion sizes were big, but the restaurant food was not to our taste. Our server Geben was excellent. The second night we arranged to eat on the terrace, from the bar menu. Breakfast was plentiful, but the hollandaise sauce was very odd, and there was no white bread for toast on the first morning.
The spa treatments and therapists were excellent, we both ended feeling super relaxed, and as if we had been away for longer than 2 nights. The express facial did not feel “express” at all, and I could have stayed on the treatment bed sleeping after the foot and leg massage. The changing room and terrace needed attention and throughout the stay there were no swimming towels on a number of occasions – however the reception staff delivered towels to us when they arrived. Spa reception staff were very accommodating in delivering drinks promptly when ordered.
Overall great value for money, excellent staff, great cakes and pastries and very good spa treatments.

We have just returned from a truly wonderful family long weekend break at this lovely hotel

The food in the restaurant was amazing and very good value. I enjoyed using the gym and spa facilities every day while my wife and mother were pampered and cared for by the spa treatment team.

The ambience within the lounge for afternoon tea and cake made for a very relaxing and chilled afternoon.

Whilst we were here we took the opportunity to view the fabulous wedding and banqueting venue that has been added to the hotel. Wow....we have have now made enquires about having my sons wedding their next year. They have been able to provide a great value for money proposal and are one of few providers who able to cater for the full guest lists.

It will also be a good excuse for my wife and I to visit the wonderful Greenwoods one or twice again before the wedding

Our stay at the hotel was lovely, all the staff were friendly and informative. Everything was clean and the food was lovely, breakfast in the room was very good. Service in the restaurant in the evening was a bit slow but the waitresses were really friendly and recommended we had dessert in the room as we were so full. The pool was very busy early afternoon with towels on all the loungers with not as many people in there, so these had been saved. Although it seems there are posters around to say this cannot happen. We went back later afternoon and used a lounger outside which was nice. The relaxation room and steam room were very nice and cosy too.

Only feedback we gave on the form we were given was that our room was a bit too warm so a fan or air con would be good to invest in, we didn’t sleep very well due to the heat and the windows didn’t let in a breeze at all. There also seems to be an obvious shortage in robes from the reviews on here and also our own experience, luckily when we were told there were not any robes a new load just arrived, but we witnesses people complaining about it, this didn’t affect us though. A fridge in the room would have been nice to keep some water in. The shower was a really nice waterfall one.

We would come back, it’s a lovely hotel and spa and we would recommend it to family and friends.

I returned for the 1st time since lockdown & was expecting more in the way of precautions, regarding Coronavirus. True, the reception now has screens in font of the desks, and there is a hand sanitiser alongside the desk. Guests are expected to wear masks in the corridors & there is another hand sanitiser by the door into the Ladies changing rooms. And that’s it - given that a lot of people will hold onto the handrail to go down to the pool, I would have expected sanitiser at both the top & bottom of the stairs. I certainly expected some in the changing rooms, especially at the vanity unit where the hairdryers are stationed, but I never found any in the changing rooms, shower area or poolside. I didn’t use the gym today as I wanted to ease myself back in gently, so can’t comment on that. Oh, and you now have to bring your own towels. I gave 4 stars as I appreciate, like everywhere else, they are trying to combine new regulations with what should be a pampering experience, so maybe they’ll take note. However, Portland’s Park Hotel nearby are only allowing members at this time, for social distancing. I dread to think what the tiny pool will be like once the day trippers start back

Dear Jan59Essex, Thank you for your review. Firstly please note that Greenwoods has reopened for the month of August, solely for gym members and no other guests. We are unsure if you were aware of this but we have sent lots of communications out about this during lock down. Our facilities are opening to everyone from Monday 24th August. With regards to hand sanitisers; we have lots of these in place throughout the hotel and spa. There are hand sanitisers fixed on the top and bottom of the stairs going down to the pool, which perhaps you overlooked on your visit, as well as outside the changing room doors and in lots of other locations. We are asking guests to be sensible and follow the guidelines set out by the government and as such would expect guests to wash their hand frequently during their visits and not just rely on the hand sanitisers. Guidelines stipulate that hand washing is still the most effective precaution in the fight against Covid-19. Towels have been forbidden for gym users by the government which was set out in the rules regarding re opening of gyms and leisure facilities issued by the government. The hotel itself was stunning, with beautiful grounds to match. We found Greenwoods in 2019, and decided to make it our wedding venue in 2020 for our wedding day on the 13th of August 2021. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and their wedding coordinators Christie and Shannen helped make our wedding day run perfectly along with all the staff that worked that day.

The food was lovely and all the guest enjoyed it, especially the wedges that were brought out with the evening buffet. The DJ was brilliant and had a varied selection of music with everyone getting up to dance at some point in the evening.

The rooms were well maintained with all the guests that stayed overnight enjoying a good nights sleep in big comfy beds with myself and my wife staying in a beautifully decorated bridal suite.

The breakfast was lovely, with a choice of a continental or full english, again with the staff being friendly and polite.

Overall, whether you want a wedding venue, hotel or spa facilities, I recommend you definitely consider Greenwoods.

Me and my wife visited for a second time to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We came back after such a great experience last year and the quality of service is still just as fantastic. What really stands out is how friendly and considerate the staff and management are. We arranged our booking over the phone with Nikki who was extremely helpful and she was able to upgrade our room to a suite due to there being no weddings during our stay dates. It was absolutely lovely, clean, very spacious and had the most comfortable super king size bed. Whenever we ordered room service it was delivered very fast. We recommend the chicken pasta from the bar menu we actually ended up ordering this twice! There was a moment on the last day where the 2 draft lager taps stopped working and manager Manny was more than happy to give 2 bottled beers for the price of 1 for the inconvenience.

Every aspect of the hotel is clean and premium quality, we had a massage which was great and found the staff in the beauty salon friendly and fun to talk to. They have a large indoor pool and a nice jacuzzi which we enjoyed. The gym was also great it had all the machines you would need for a full body workout. We had a lovely meal in the hotel restaurant and everything was at a Michelin star quality with a lovely welcoming service.

Greenwood’s is very well located for us, if you are looking for a nice break in a rural country village it’s just 30 mins on the train from London Stratford plus a 5 minute taxi ride from Billerica to the hotel. The village of Stock is very lovely there are a handful of amazing village pubs with great food and great service all within a 5 minute walk from the hotel.

We will definitely come back again this has become our favourite weekend away hotel and spa!

We had our wedding at Greenwood’s this weekend! From start to finish the entire day was perfect!

Way before the day the wedding team where on hand to help us prepare our day down to the finest detail. We then had the challenge of COVID with different restrictions and regulations. Greenwood’s went above and beyond to ensure all our closest friends and family where kept safe and at the same time made everyone feel it was as normal as possible.

They made lots of adjustments to give us the most amazing memorable day, kept us outside where they could and ensured the entire venue was perfectly clean and sanitised.

We had countless guests comment on the entire day how good it was , how much they loved the food, how accommodating the staff were. I couldn’t agree more!

With such a diverse range of people present they made a huge range of specific changes to meals and drinks making everyone feel perfectly accommodated.

Anything we needed or asked for was done immediately. They ran the entire day like clockwork and allowed us to enjoy the day without having to worry. They had checkins with us to make sure each stage of the wedding was exactly what we wanted and pivoted quickly when our outdoor ceremony needed to be brought inside due to poor weather!

I couldn’t be happier and would advise anyone to go and speak to them if you are thinking of getting married!

Had a lovely 1 night stay here. The room was beautiful, country style but not completely outdated and had some modern-ish touches and very spacious. The bed was huge and very comfortable. All of the staff were very nice and helpful, although a little more explaining on things such as spa opening times, breakfast times, room service etc would be good as we did have to ask a few questions around these things. We were handed some documents, 1 included information on spa etiquette and there were some further documents in the room, however as I mentioned some details were still missing and we did need to ask a few things.

The spa was nice, but very busy. All of the chairs around the pool were taken, but 2 by the time we got down there about 4pm. The facilities were good, a nice pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. A relaxation room would be nice too. Although not exactly the hotel's fault, but some of the guests were particularly loud at the pool area and as the area echoed it was particularly noisy. Not ideal for trying to relax and unwind, but of course understand that people were enjoying themselves.

We had dinner in the hotel and the food was nice and reasonably priced. We also opted for room service breakfast which was good. Although a little old fashioned in the sense that there was no vegetarian cooked breakfast option available (at least not on the room service service order form anyway - may be different on the breakfast menu downstairs). There were also no beans with the cooked breakfast too, which we found a little odd. When checking out, we were charged for the tea and coffee that we ordered with the breakfast which we were a bit shocked at, as there was no mention of this anywhere! It was a staggering £4 each for a pot of tea and a pot of coffee! If we had known there was an additional charge we would have just stuck with the free tea and coffee we had in the room! 

Overall it was a really lovely stay here and we would definitely like to return some time. The stay went so quickly and we were sad when it came to an end. Although 2pm check in and 11am check out are pretty generic timings, we felt like it just didn't quite feel long enough to really enjoy every aspect of this beautiful hotel.

Hello .. we believe you have access to the basic spa facilities, as we used the pool, jacuzzi and sauna. We paid for massages and other spa treatments. We had a lovely stay at this hotel.. we hope to go back again. Good luck.
