I visited the Royal George on a work trip, the pub itself is situated in the little village of Birdlip so it’s fairly quiet in the area. The staff are welcoming and friendly and answer your questions with as much information as they can. The place itself on the exterior depicts the typical English village pub which I thought coincided with the area well. This is where it gets abit of a downer… so firstly the rooms, they are WELL over due an upgrade, very dated, tiny TV’s, very old furniture, now I’m well aware the pub is an old building but that doesn’t mean the rooms have to also be stuck in the 1980’s. The lack of plug sockets near the bed is annoying if you want to have your phone charging next to you. The TV is just a very basic free view tv so if your wanting to Netflix and chill… you can’t. The general cleanliness of the room just wasn’t up to a standard I would expect from a popular hotel, grateful the maid came in to empty the bin but that’s pretty much all they did, there’s thick dust build up on the furniture in the room, the bathrooms need a serious revamp the amount of rust around the bath/taps/sink/ plug pretty much everywhere you look in the bathroom there is rust even on the mirror😳. The rooms are just begging for a 2024 revamp, the curtains are probably older than me, they need to go! What probably pushed it for me was the amount of noise pollution there is throughout the night! Doors slamming, people marching up and down corridors, I could literally hear every single word of a conversation some people were having below me its just not great when your on a business trip and you’ve got to be up and out the next morning. The doors are the worst thing, typical old style yale locks on the doors so you’ve got to give them a pull or else they won’t shut which vibrates around the full hotel, they need immediately changing! I have two small kids at home and I’ve probably slept less here than I have at home… I haven’t been down and tried the food admittedly purely because I’m on a restricted diet and the restaurant is the typical chain gastro pub so there’s nothing below 500 calories for me to eat even the salads are astronomical in calories. I would have loved to have eaten downstairs instead of living off supermarket salads whilst I’m here, it would be nice for the restaurant to cater lower calorie options instead of having most things fried! Just my personal opinion I’m sure other people love the food I would have just liked to have seen more variety. This goes for the breakfast too, I have breakfast included in my room stay but unless I just eat a piece of fruit, the food option on a morning is just ladened with calories so yeah that’s been wasted. I’m also staying here with other colleagues from my work and I was told by another colleague they’ve got damp and mould in their room which needs immediate attention! People be getting poorly! The WiFi is terrible, when your in your rooms the wifi doesn’t reach and with only 3G it’s really hard to get onto the internet to complete work! Considering this hotel gets a lot of bookings made through companies for their employees I would have expected atleast the wifi to work! Personally I wouldn’t stay here again for leisure, it definitely has a target audience and sadly I don’t fit into that category. Give the place a well needed revamp!

Revisited on a Friday evening. Greeted by a friendly member of bar staff, Jasmine, who was very attentive and quickly served our order which she remembered from a previous visit. She was very cheerful and happy to stop for a quick chat. The pub wasn’t too busy and there was a nice relaxed atmosphere. I didn’t eat however the food looked very appetising. Will definitely return before too long.

My husband and I stayed overnight on our way from France to the North Yorkshire Coast with our two dogs. Our ground floor room was clean and comfortable with patio doors to a personal enclosed area with gate that led to beer garden; beyond there was a large, open field. Ideal for our party! We really appreciated the warm, relaxing atmosphere and friendliness from both staff members and other guests. While we enjoyed a good lunch in the bar area our dogs were tucked in under the table. We will definitely be back.

Great value, good quality meals and very warm and friendly staff. A great place to meet up with old friends and family. Eat well in the cosy old building and be warm on a winters day. Good size car park with pleasant views of the surrounding countryside.

Check-in was very smooth. Reception, bar and restaurant staff were very friendly. We reserved a premier room with four poster bed and sitting area. Furniture seemed a little dated but it went with the style of the hotel. Breakfast had a great choice of cooked and continental. definitely filled us up for the day. Evening meal was your traditional pub food, again there was a good choice available. We didn't see a lift so this maybe a problem for some people. Would definitely stay again when visiting the area.

Typical chain pub, not the Cotswold country inn we had hoped for. Arrived around noon with my sister and cousin. There was a long queue for the bar. Numerous staff standing around but only one bartender who appeared to be on a go slow. Quite frustrating but eventually got a drink. Looking at the menu we decided to order three soups of the day. Went back to the bar to order only to be told there were only two portions left. This was surprising considering it was only 12:30 at lunchtime. Chose the other soup on the menu, but they didn’t have any of that at all. The girl behind the bar was rather gruff and matter of fact. Not in the least apologetic and clearly not really suited to a customer facing role. In general the pub was ok and the beer choice was good but it had an impersonal “chain” feel and the soup was certainly not home made. The place is at best average, nothing like the country inn experience we have enjoyed in other parts of the district. I’m not saying don’t go there but just be aware of what you’re going to get.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback , I’m sorry that some of our soups were unavailable , I understand this can be frustrating after selecting your choices, our soups are not homemade and due to popularity we had run short. Sorry the bar service wasn’t up to standard and we are investigation your comments with the team. I do hope you will consider trying us again in the future .

I rated the experience with two stars primarily due to the service provided by the waitress. Regrettably, our group of 13 encountered several issues with the food, including concerns about potential cross-contamination risks. For instance, the Trio roast dinners were missing essential components like parsnips, crackling, and undercooked Yorkshire puddings. The Turkey dinner was mistakenly served as pork roast, and one roast dish contained pasta from another meal. While discussing these issues there was a worry that if someone had allergies, the cross-contamination could have posed a critical health risk if allergies were there. Moreover, the unprofessional behavior of a young chef discussing the matter amongst themselves was disappointing. This situation underscored the need for better communication and professionalism in the kitchen to prevent such errors from occurring in the future.

Hi Phil S, I really appreciate your honest feedback, and it will definitely be taken on board. I'm sorry for the experience you've had, and the lack of commutation from the kitchen regarding the missing dish items , I believe the duty manager at the time rectified this with the bill and we do take cross contamination very seriously so this has been raised with our kitchen team. Hope you will consider dining with us again .
