My husband and I stayed in a woodland lodge for 3 nights at the end of July and had a fantastic time. The lodge itself was very clean, comfortable and very well kitted out, with a nice decking area. The location of the site was brilliant for local walking, we especially enjoyed the RSPB Nagshead area which is just over the road from the site. During the pandemic we have been very careful with social distancing etc, and so were looking for somewhere that sounded like it was taking the pandemic seriously and putting decent measures in place to provide as safe an environment as possible. We were particularly impressed with the contactless check-in which was performed very quickly and safely, without having to leave our car. They also had a good one-way and distanced queuing system for the restaurant (takeaway) and bar, with separate entrance and exit. All guests were asked to wear a face covering whilst indoors. Whilst we were there the doors were kept open which meant these areas were also well ventilated. With all these measures in place we felt comfortable using both the bar and takeaway service. Seating was outside and, although the tables and chairs were suitably distanced, we preferred to sit away on the large picnic green due to some guests walking too close to those sat down. There was plenty of room. All in all we were able to thoroughly enjoy our trip, and the efforts the site and staff were putting in to increase safety helped us to have a relaxing break.

We stayed for two nights in a Pet Friendly Glamping pod. First warning, most phones do not work here, O2, Three definitely do not, a lady on EE was able to make calls. The free WiFi is only around the bar area and is decent enough.

The lady at reception was lovely and helpful and we were given directions to our pod, it was in a beautiful setting and we couldn’t have asked for better. The pod was so spacious and they had thought of so many little features which enhanced our stay. The swimming pool and entertainment room are currently closed due to Covid and we knew this in advance, the bar, shop and restaurant was open with clearly signed one way systems which people were sticking to. Outside the bar is a nice seating area overlooking a massive field which is nice on a hot day. Drinks are served in plastic disposable glasses if you’re outside and there is a recycling wheelie bin to put them in afterwards. Please empty this bin! It was overfull when we arrived and two days later had still not been emptied.

The only negative we found and it was quite concerning, regarding our whole experience with breakfast, first of all, we had a dog with us, we were told we could only have dogs outside, that’s fine, although maybe not as practical if the weather had been bad? As a result we could only buy things from the takeaway menu and not from the restaurant menu, so no full English for us. Not very ‘pet friendly’. We ordered and paid via contactless and it came to £21.40, it seemed high but instead of causing a fuss, it was easier just to ask for a receipt so I could check afterwards, he printed a till receipt off and without me saying or doing anything, he said ‘oh it looks like I’ve charged you £2 too much’ (the receipt said £19.40 how did this happen?) and took £2 out the till to give me back. I don’t see how you can accidentally charge someone £21.40 for a £19.40 round. I’ve worked in hospitality and have seen this before, he’s quite clearly adding his own Gratuity on before waving the card machine in your face knowing that most punters just tap tap tap their card regardless. Then when I got back to the table, I realised I had also been overcharged for my food, although this seemed like a Till issue rather than any deception, the Sausage, Egg, Bacon muffin is advertised on the menus at £3.95 but the till registers them at £4.95, the staff refunded the difference once I pointed it out. The food arrived and was perfectly fine. Although the whole experience left us with a negative vibe and we didn’t spend a penny in there again, instead choosing to drink our own alcohol or taking a short walk to the nearby fountain Inn pub which was wonderful and very very dog friendly. Also highly recommend the Postage Stamp Cafe which is a very short walk away, possibly the best full English I’ve ever had and so cheap

Thanks for your feedback regarding your recent stay with us at Whitemead, I am glad to hear that you enjoyed your glamping pod experience and that you felt the site was satisfactory during this difficult time, I have passed on your comments in regards to the bin emptying to our grounds department. I would just like to address the comment of "Dodgy Staff member" I can assure you that all staff at Whitemead are hardworking and genuine people, and we pride ourselves on having great staff. We receive lots of good positive feedback about our staff, so its disappointing that you think a staff member would be "rounding" up receipts / peoples food & drinks for their own gratification. I have in fact looked further into this and spoken to those who were working and the duty manager in the main building the morning of your breakfast and it was a genuine human error, we have looked into the pricing on the till compared to those on the menus and adjusted them accordingly where needed. Whitemead.

Our second camping trip during the 6 weeks holiday with our first being very well organised by a Norfolk park and social distancing being followed in all areas.

First the pros: the facilities and general layout of the park felt great, could see lots for the kids to do (albeit it some closed but not the parks fault in current circumstances, obviously) beautiful views and lots of places to visit offsite (we went to an ore mine one day while it rained and the kids loved it) facilities we generally very clean, a little grubby towards the end of the day with hair in the drains etc but soon cleaned and generally kept in order. Laundry service was top notch, machines actually cleaned everything which is a miracle for camping site washing machines. Laundry room very clean and modern. Some very pleasant campers both in motor homes/caravans and camping.

The cons: with half the washing up facilities being cordoned off due to covid, the one sink situated close to the camping was overrun regularly. Now I’d put this down to limits with covid, but even with the 2 sinks available it would have been manic, as was the 1 women’s toilet for campers. There are more down near the main reception but with 3 young kids just out of potty training, there were quite a few long waits for facilities that didn’t involve a walk. The pitches had very quick turn arounds so there were campers coming and going at all times, very busy and large numbers for the facilities for campers.

The second and more important point, social distancing wasn’t observed at any time on the camping pitches. There was a large party when we turned up on the first Sunday, I’d say at least 3/4 families all with kids. Then a group of 6ish adults turned up for the same pitches later in the week and then finally a group of up to 8 families all rocked up on our last Friday, erected a huge gazebo with a screen showing a rugby match, all congregated under it and screamed and shouted until the early hours. A dog barking incessantly at anyone who walked by. After the heat wave and then torrential rain (again not blaming the park) the final straw was this massive party, we left the next morning to find a hotel room and a good nights sleep.

I know a lot of people will say ‘oh well that’s what you get for booking a large park’ but to be honest, we’ve been in bigger only a few weeks ago and didn’t have any issues at all. There were clear guidelines that said large groups were not permitted and if they attempted to camp they’d be turned away. There didn’t seem to be any of this at whitemead.

The take away service for the price was also mediocre. I know limits with covid again, but I tried the chilli on the first night and it tasted just like mince and dry rice in take away boxes. Pizzas were over £10 and also mediocre. Again we’ve also had take away pizzas in the current covid situation and enjoyed them on other parks.

So all in all a mixed visit and probably wouldn’t return

Hi Lucy, Thanks for your feedback regarding your recent stay with us here at Whitemead, we take on board all feedback and I’m glad some aspects of your stay were positive. I have passed on your comments to our food & beverage team regarding the takeaways. We have found this year, more than any other year that there has been an influx in first time campers to the site which unfortunately has resulted in the normal campsite etiquette not being observed. So I can only apologise that others around you weren’t observing social distancing & congregating together, our duty managers do walk around the site and remind people of the rules but we also as a family holiday park rely on our guests to use their common sense during this difficult time. Due to covid-19 and the restrictions on space we have had to close every other toilet & sink to keep within the 2 metre government guidance and allow our guests to use these facilities safely. Unfortunately as our site is in peak season this has resulted in a one in one out system which we understand can be difficult and frustrating so we do apologise for this. We are sorry to hear you feel you don’t want to revisit whitemead, we would love to have the opportunity to ensure you have a more enjoyable holiday with us in the future. Team Whitemead.

Hi, Thanks for your recent feedback regarding your 1 night stay with us, we take all comments very seriously especially these types of complaints in the current climate. It will be discussed with the relevant department managers, who will highlight the issues with their team. I am surprised to read that you feel the toilet block facilities hadn’t been checked within a 12 hour period. Since re opening on the 6th July we have put in place an enhanced cleaning procedure for our public area cleaners to follow. Our main focus has been to ensure all the “touch points” of public areas are sanitised on a very regular basis, the public areas are also checked throughout the night by our night porters and cleaned where necessary. On the occasion that you mention the hand sanitizer was empty, there is hot water and soap in all of our wash rooms available.

We visited Whitemead with two other families as lockdown was easing. We had received emails reassuring us that the campsite would be clean. When we arrived we could see that the restaurant had social distancing policies in place and this worked reasonably well. However, Most of the tables on the patio area of the restaurant were left with leftover food, plates and cutlery when we arrived and they were not cleared during our meal. The tables were dirty and when our food arrived, it was of poor quality.
Furthermore, the shared bathroom facilities were not as clean as I had hoped. Whilst we did see Cleaning staff around the site, my expectations were not met in terms of how frequently the shared areas were cleaned. I would not recommend this site for this reason.
There was not enough hand sanitiser available in the shared areas and it did not feel as though this campsite was Covid safe in my opinion. If this is what the hygiene levels are like now, I can’t imagine what they are like under normal circumstances. The lack of good hygiene made me and other people in our party nervous as we were coming out of the pandemic.
Disappointing overall.

The campsite is well laid out in a good location for direct access to the forest's walking and cycling trails. We didn't use the facilities so we can't comment on these.

My only gripe is the check in and check out times and why they are so spaced apart. Check in is at 2pm and check out is at 11am. They did allow us to arrive at 12pm as i contacted them that morning to check whether our pitch was free and we did stay the following day but we had to pay for a day pass costing £10. But it would be nice not to have to do this each time we visit. If arrival is 1pm and checkout 12pm, then we would be encouraged back and is more on par with other sites in the area.

We'll probably try another site next time to give us more flexibility ie more time to do things on the afternoon of arrival day and the morning we leave.

Thanks for your recent feedback regarding your stay with us, we are pleased to hear you found the campsite well laid out and the location good. Our check out times are spaced out in that was so our groundmen can check the pitches ready for the arrivals and carry out any maintenance if required (ie broken hook up, littered pitches etc) Team Whitemead.

Positives

Great location
The wildlife
The staff were very friendly
The Saturday evening outdoor band

Negatives

Your slogan ‘You’ll find our accommodation has everything you could wish for’ is very misleading and should be removed – or Trading Standards may be interested; let me explain:
The wifi was non-existent, we mentioned this to the staff and they replied it is always poor! With 2 teenagers, this was a massive negative and it should be highlighted on the main booking page that there is no wifi in the accommodation. I acknowledge that very early in the morning (around 6 am), you could get enough wifi to send an email (with no pictures) if you stood next to the Venue (a 5 min walk from the Log caravan), but this quickly disappeared when more than 5 people did the same. Forget streaming!
The log caravan/s (cabin) needs updating: the décor was shabby, it was damp and the equipment level compared with Forest holidays was very poor.
The beds were shockingly uncomfortable and left me with backache (and no I don’t suffer with a bad back) and resulted in 3 nights of poor sleeps. I now need to book in to see a chiropractor!
The TV was so dated/small and the picture signal was poor it was unwatchable.
The price was not good value for money. From what I could see, the glamping pods had a much higher level of comfort.

Overall

Disappointed! The log caravans (cabins) should be replaced as they have gone way beyond their best and a few coloured cushions and pictures don’t make up for it! The site wifi needs to be urgently updated/repaired, everyone we spoke to during the weekend commented negatively, with one family advising they go to the local Tesco to get wifi.

We visited Whitemead and stayed in a pet friendly lodge for four nights. Firstly this is a lovely park and great if you have kids, there’s a pool and play area and lots of lovely walks to go on. Our lodge internally was really lovely. Very comfortable for the two of us and a small dog. The views of the pond out back were so lovely. However I would say that the external of the lodge needs a bit of TLC. There were cobwebs everywhere and the patio table obviously hadn’t been cleaned for ages (when I wiped it my wipe was filthy).

We’ve stayed in plenty of these types of places before. So we came prepared with food and essentials. However. This is what we were provided with on entry:

A bag with a dog blanket, treats, poo bag, a ball (cute) and a flyer telling us what our dog couldn’t do.

A tote bag with a tea towel, a sponge and a small amount of washing up liquid.
One bin bag
One loo roll
One bathroom hand soap
A plastic bag with sugar, two tea bags, two coffee sachets and two milk pods.

We have never had to go out and buy bin bags, loo roll and cleaning products at anywhere we have stayed similar to this previously. It wouldn’t be so bad if they told us that this wasn’t provided before we arrived so we weren’t restricted to buy these things from the park shop which is obviously expensive!! I would of rathered our dog go without his treat bag and us have the essentials provided to us. The cooking provisions also aren’t that great (one frying pan and one saucepan only).

The park allows dogs in some of its accommodation however I would not say this is a very dog friendly park. Dogs aren’t allowed in the restaurant or bar so we took our custom elsewhere where dogs are freely allowed (highly recommend the Rising Sun).

The restaurant or bar is a bit soulless although staff were friendly. Food menu wasn’t extensive at all.

There is a lot to do in the local area and the park is in a stunning setting surrounded by the Forest. I would definitely return to the park but just think it needs a little TLC!

I stayed in an apartment over Christmas and thought it was amazing. The clean apartment had everything you need, from pots and pans, glasses, fruit bowl, cutlery, iron and airer. They give you an attractive, cotton, reusable shopping bag, with a small washing up liquid and cloth. There's a hair-dryer in the main bedroom drawer, which also has another TV and another en suite bathroom. It was nice to wake and see the forest out the upper floor Juliet balcony window.
They even put in a small Christmas tree with lights, and new wrapped decorations like tinsel and baubles, so you could decide if to put on tree or elsewhere.
There were towels, toilet roll and small guest soap, but no other toiletries, if you're wondering what to bring. Site has a very small shop which only sells a few essentials.
Only thing apartment didn't have was a washing machine, but there's a laundry room on the site that takes coins.
Site is nice. Cafe doesn't do anything too fancy, but good for breakfasts and drinks such as mocktails. Lydney is 10 mins by car if you want to pick up a take-away. There's a steam train in Lydney, and interesting other places not far by car to explore, such as Monmouth.
Swimming pool has two large jacuzzi. Large enough if a few people go in and still far away enough to be socially distanced, and not feel awkward. Swimming pool was clean and maintained. It's adults only from 8-9 and and also an hour in the evening. The gym is also free to use for guests.
Wish there was a place like that near me to join to go often.
If I had to be very fussy, the only thing I could think of to complain about is the double bed felt like two mattresses put together and could feel the join in the middle.
There's also no mobile phone signal, but the wifi to get online has improved since I went last time, so you can keep in touch on whatsapp or other online communication. I didn't have problems getting online from an apartment, but not sure about other areas. Although they said there have been more masts put in to improve the wifi all over.
I stayed in a glamping pod last time, which was also nice in a different way, as was more like getting back to nature.

Hi Suzanna, Thanks for your detailed review regarding the park, and I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed your winter break with us! I have passed your comments on to our housekeeping team regarding the double mattress within the apartment. Back in 2021 during our closure period we spent significant time and money on improving the Wi-Fi across the site so we are pleased to hear that you found this time you found it had improved. We hope to see you again soon at Whitemead! perhaps next time in a different accommodation again.

We were visiting family in the Forest of Dean and booked a Premier Appartment for 4 nights. As two couples, elderly, the two bedrooms were at odds with each other. One being large with en-suite, one being smaller without a TV and not en-suite. In the large bedroom there was no ventilation other than opening the French doors. Therefore at night the room would be airless. In both rooms there was no plug near a mirror for using a hair dryer. In the smaller bedroom and separate bathroom the mirrors were at height far too low to be useful. The twin beds were uncomfortable with springs that stuck into your body. The pillows also were lumpy. Overall the apartment is in need of refurbishment, walls were dirty, paintwork scruffy, table wonky, settees saggy. There are also areas of flooring in several places which dip and feel spongy. It was not as clean as it could have been. There were no instructions for the towel rails, heaters or the TV. The TV signal kept dropping out on HD or terrestrial, which was annoying. The worst was the Wi-fi, it showed full strength but news, FB, emails and games would not download, mobile signal is virtually nil. On a positive note the showers were good and the kitchen well equipped.
The restaurant food was good, as was service but the seats are heavily stained and tired.
Customer service regarding issues to do with TV etc was not good, unfriendly almost to the point of being surly. As someone who comes from this area originally it was altogether disappointing, it needs a good shake up all round and standards to improve and matter!
