We selected 36onthequay for the promise of a view of the harbour and we weren't disappointed.
We stayed in the vanilla room which is at the front and has commanding views of the quay. There is a low beam across the middle of the room but we both managed to stoop under it.
The bed was huge and welcoming and the room was everything we hoped for. We ate at 730 in a safe and secure environment. We opted for the al a carte 3 course dinner but were surprised by a number of amuse-bouches offered as well.
For starters we had the squid broth and the cod which were both wholesome tasty and appetising.
We had the turbot and the duck for our mains which were excellent too.
Breakfast the next morning was served on a tray left outside our door at an agreed time.
It was a bountiful selection of breads, toast and preserves with some granola, fresh fruit, yoghurt, orange juice and tea which we enjoyed as the sun streamed into our room.
Throughout our stay the staff were friendly and welcoming.

We can't find fault in this little gem of a place . We absolutely loved it

36 On The Quay is a very nice place to enjoy a great meal. There is great attention to detail here, where the chef seems extremely conscientious and puts a lot of attention to detail into his cooking. The location is lovely, right at the waterfront in Emsworth, overlooking the harbour ~ on a nice day, like it was today ~ it’s very nice to look out to sea and enjoy the great ambiance in the restaurant. Tables are lain with fine white linen tablecloths, pristine napkins and fine wine glasses and very nice cutlery ~ the interior is pristine and smart, and so there is good thought in this place. The food is well prepared and expertly made, and it’s clear to see that there is some skill behind the food. We had a Sunday lunch, with starters ~ consisting of smoked mackerel, a chicken pâté, and the main was a really excellent roast Wagyu Beef ~ with trimmings and a lovely Jus. Honey roasted carrots and parsnips, crispy roast potatoes and cauliflower cheese with a ‘polonaise’ garlic crumb. Some menu items are a little pricey - for example, slices of bread, with some butters was around £7, which wouldn’t be so bad had you been given more than 3 very small slices of bread. The butters were interesting however - and overall it was a fabulous meal, in a lovely setting. The service is overseen by the manageress, but the staff are young and attentive, and the salon is well run, aside the odd mistake here and there ~ it was a really lovely lunch, and we all very much enjoyed it. Would definitely go again, even though Gary the chef didn’t find time to come and say hello. I think it’s important that the chef comes and meets his clients - makes a big impact, and people love it.

We have now dined at 36 on the Quay a number of times. Each time it has been consistently excellent, with an ever-changing 8 course tasting menu (10 if you include the delicious canapés and amuse bouche). The menus are well balanced and the flavours push the boundaries ( but gently) eg poached langoustine with gooseberries and geranium, Piri Piri turbot, sea trout Wellington. The service is professional but very friendly. The setting is amazing - a beautifully presented dining room overlooking the Quay at Emsworth. The tasting menu and wine flight are good value at £80 and £48 respectively. Michelin star cooking (the restaurant doesn’t have one yet but surely there must be one imminent?) at reasonable prices. Fine dining at its best.

We booked a table for two on the 19th and looking at the positives, the wine was nice and we managed to get the taxi to pick us earlier than booked.

We started with some amuse bouche, a lump of duck fat and butter and two slices of raw fish followed by a piece of scampi. I’m a fan of sushi but the raw fish didn’t taste fresh and was unpleasant, you can’t eat a lump of butter by itself. The scampi turned out to be the nicest food of the evening.

One hour in our starters came, I chose the frothed garlic and cheese soup with potato’s, luke warm, too garlicky and not pleasant.

An hour and a half in the main courses arrived. The cod was off so we had Monkfish in a nasty lemon sauce. The monkfish was tough as old boots, the sauce unpleasant and the 11 peas sprinkled over the plate unnecessary. At that point we were rescued by the taxi and went back to the hotel for a couple of starters and pudding.

There is little choice on the menu, the food was luke warm and took to long to come, it’s pretentious cooking and the dishes were unpleasant.

We left almost all of our meal and I was a little surprised that the waitress didn’t ask if we were enjoying our meal. Maybe she could spot that from our faces.

I’m always more than happy to pay for a really decent innovative meal and that was what I was hoping for from this place, but man was I disappointed!!! The flavors just weren’t there, the lobster was flabby and watery, I opted for the vegetarian main which was supposed to include quinoa.... it didn’t. The Wagyu beef my partner chose was nothing special and the onion mash overwhelmingly tasted of bisto powder on top of smash! We made a swift exit before dessert (my fav meal) as the food was so poor. We won’t be revisiting especially as they ran out of Rosè.

Very disappointed with the food I get from the street food van - I ordered squid and prawns in tempura batter and truffle chips. The chips were ho hum, but the squid and prawn was awful, thick, oily, greasy batter and the contents were dried out. It ended up in the bin, just not edible and a waste of money

Visited for my 30th birthday on a Thursday but we wish we hadn’t gone.

We were given less than a full glass of fizz to celebrate my birthday which was thoughtful.

Canapés were delicious and a complimentary extra.

First course of taster menu, wine paired well with the bbq mackerel. The mackerel was quite spicy so wouldn’t be enjoyed by those that don’t like spice. Sadly it went downhill from here…

Second course was langoustine which for us were overcooked and presentation was lacking.

Third course was red mullet but the bed of spinach was too salty.

Next was scallops and again, the kale was overly salty!

Next was goose breast which was gristly and the fat needed rendering more.

Finally was the Australian wagyu which wasn’t all that great and again, very salty. By this point, we were past enjoying the taster menu.

Each course was brought out before we’d finished our last glass of wine from the £51 a head wine flight. I ended up with a glass of red from the goose STILL when dessert was served. I had to ask for a break between the last main course and pre dessert.

The pre dessert of mango and passion fruit was extremely sharp!

Dessert finally served that was two types of frozen raspberry ice cream/sorbet and very sharp freeze dried raspberries.

We arrived at 7.30 and finished our dessert gone 10pm. The evening felt rushed from about 9pm.

It would have been a nice touch to serve my dessert with the standard chocolate happy birthday which by reading other reviews has happened or complimentary chocolates and candles.

My other half left feeling he needs to apologise for where we chose to celebrate my 30th birthday.

Part of the bill was discounted but honestly it wasn’t enough and I’ve had better meals for a lot less.

It lacks ambience and a fine dining atmosphere. The staff are nice but don’t expect any type of silver service.

Restaurant felt cold as well!

Won’t be coming back sadly!

Eating at 36 On the Quay is a special dining experience. In addition to the courses you order there are many exciting small bites to try from canapes to pre-desserts. Everything we ate was beautifully served and delicious. It's worth noting that of you would like the set menu it has to be pre-ordered. We were celebrating a birthday which the staff made extra special with complementary glasses of prosecco and birthday chocolates with a candle! I would recommend 36 0n the Quay for a memorable & special celebratory meal.

A hidden gem on the south coast! Exceptional food and wine pairing at very reasonable costs for the quality of the food. Great atmosphere, lovely staff and a well thought through menu, showcasing both British and international ingredients.

Having had an incredible meal during the week, my wife thought it would be a great idea to take my Mother in Law along for lunch as a Birthday treat. Once again 36 did not disappoint. An attentive generous owner and a lunch experience to remember! Thank you 36 On the Quay for a great memory!
