Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great one night stay. Good sized room with perfectly functional en-suite and view into the garden. Parking was free but make sure you let reception know so the vehicle can be logged. Reception was friendly as was the bar. Breakfast was fabulous and as previously experienced. In summary, The Red Lion for me, makes a great base from which to visit family and the wider local area.

We had a family get together and meal for my wife’s birthday. The food was excellent, especially the Asian belly pork, the staff were very attentive and friendly. It was a great experience in nice surroundings. We will definitely be going back there in the future.

7.45pm arrived wanting to eat in dining area which only had people on 2 tables and were told we could eat only in bar area with the drinkers what difference would it have made to the staff if we could have just had a quiet table in the dining area?? Not a customer friendly place . Is this why it is not busy??

We booked thus venue at short notice for my Mum's 90th birthday. I booked 2 rooms for my family in the hotel slong with a dinner reservation. On arrival our greeting was warm and friendly. We had a special request to look after a cake my wife had made until dinner. This was all no problem and did work very well. The cake miraculously appeared at the correct moment. Hats off to the staff for that one especially when you consider they had a busy night! The dinner was good. We all enjoyed our choices. Quality pub fayre. I would say the bar lacked seating but it was a busy night. Bar staff were great. The room was ok. I liked the fact that rooms seemed to be placed all over. It has maintained the character of its coaching inn heritage. I think the rooms, especially the bathroom in our room could do with updating. The mirror was not well lit and shaving was a little bit of a struggle. Overall we were comfortable and enjoyed a good nights sleep. Breakfast was great. Ths continental section appeared adequate bus was on reflection actually rather good. Yoghurt, fruit, many kinds of bread for toast, croissant, cereal and fruit juices. The staff were all over us offering coffee but i would rather of had my own pot or French Press. On an ordinary day i vould of had a very good breakfast. But i was on holiday so i fix go for a full english and i was not disappointed the vegetarian option was good and the salmon was a good choice too Finally I think the whole venue was extremely good value for money. I booked online through booking.com

We arrived at the Red Lion at about 4pm on a Friday afternoon. There was a bit of a queue for check-in, but it wasn't too bad. We entered our reg details in to the machine which gave us up till 4pm on the Sunday to park the car for free, which was generous as check out was 11am. We booked a family room and was allocated room 29. The room itself was spacious but must've been the furthest room possible from the reception and dining area/bar. Despite the size of the room, it has a very low ceiling. One of us is 6' 4" and was unable to stand up straight in the room. It was also very cold in the room and we asked a few times at reception about how to solve this (lady was very helpful) but even so we couldnt get the radiators above luke warm. The furnishings in the room were good quality and the overall feel was comfortable and nicely arranged. The bathroom was a bit dated but well stocked with plenty of loo roll and nice quality large towels. Unfortunately the shower wasn't great, the pressure was a bit weak and the water kept going cold every few seconds. We ate in the bar area on the Friday night (dining room was fully booked). We were lucky to find a table, so I'd definitely recommend booking a table when you check in on a weekend. The bar was extremely busy. Food was reasonably priced and really tasty and plentiful. It arrived really quickly too. The kids meals are an absolute bargain!! Breakfast was a real highlight. Unfortunately I am Gluten Free so am limited on what I can eat from the continental buffet, but my children made up for me. They really enjoyed the fresh fruit and yoghurt and their scrambled egg on toast. Both days I had the Eggs Royale on GF toast which was absolutely lovely. Only downside was that the first morning the eggs and salmon came on 2 slices of toast, but the 2nd morning it came on only 1. I asked for an extra slice and it came pretty quickly but I just thought it was strange how the portion sizes change but the price stays the same. The ladies who served us at breakfast were very accommodating. Overall, our stay was pleasant and I think with a few improvements to the room I would have given it 4 stars. Improvements I'd suggest would be: bleed radiators/fix as they don't get warm enough even on Max. Modernise bathroom and shower. Internal window in room 29 could do with a curtain over it as the light from the hallway below shines in all night. Put a mirror above the desk or at least within reach of a plug socket for drying hair.

Very outdated room but still very clean and tidy. The bed was very comfortable and we had a desert in the restaurant which was lovely. I wanted some cocktails but they did not do them which was disappointing
