Set amidst the splendor of the North Wessex Down close by Highclere Castle, the setting of the television series "Downton Abbey", in an area designated one of outstanding natural beauty. The house, which for over 100 years has been a country retreat, still retains the feel of a private home where the Hamilton family provide a warm and caring welcome with comfortable lounges, and bedrooms where you are pampered with fluffy towels, local filtered well water and home made biscuits. Bedrooms are individually decorated, many with king size beds, spa-bath and some with four poster beds. The Restaurant serves award winning food (2 AA Rosettes) with a choice of dishes to suit all tastes. Being only one hour from London, Southampton & Oxford, and located close to the M3 and M4 motorways Esseborne is a convenient location for visiting local attractions such as Stonehenge or Highclere Castle. The intimate atmosphere in this small Country House Hotel makes it ideal for weddings and celebrations. With the option of exclusive use available Esseborne can be the location of your perfect party.

I absolutely lovely Essebourne Manor, this was not my first visit and certainly will not be my last! The hotel is lovely, the staff are friendly and the food (7 course taster menu, the 3 course dinner and the cream tea’s) are amazing and delicious. It’s such a nice place to visit, so peaceful and just what was needed after the last 6 months!

We stayed here one night in November and came back for our second night that had been cancelled due to the introduction of lockdown. It was so peaceful, we decided to stay yet another night while we were there and the owner quickly and efficiently sorted a room for us. The hotel has a calm relaxing atmosphere, is family-run and set off the road in lovely grounds. A stay here is extremely good value, too. The bedrooms are huge but the outstanding feature of the hotel is the quality of the food. We had the 7-course tasting menu the first night and the a la carte menu the second night, both equally delicious and beautifully presented. They were very obliging in letting me have two of the seven courses from the vegetarian menu, and five from the meat menu, as I love meat but I'm awkward and don't eat lamb or duck! We intend to return.

Staff: Very friendly and welcoming. Following Covid guidelines. Decor: I agree with the reviews. The place is lovely and big but yes it is run down. They made an effort with the Christmas decorations which was lovely. Room: The place is clean overall, there are dusty bits around the room as you would expect because the rooms are of decent size. We stayed in the deluxe room which was very big and comfortable. The bathroom was visibly clean but I did have an issue with the shower head. The shower would have been really lovely if it was not for the blockage of the shower head. I think it just needs de-scaling because most of the nozzles were blocked. The room was lovely and warm even though the windows were not double glazed. Lovely thick big black out curtains. Food: The food was great. Definitely worth having dinner and breakfast there. The coriander accompanied the Passion fruit panna cotta was questionable but apart from that, it was a lovely meal. Complements to the chef. The afternoon tea scones could be better. The jam that came with the scones could also be better.

Really enjoyed our 2 night stay in a large comfortable delux room. We used our Travelzoo voucher and had a 3 course dinner included on our first night and a 7 course tasting dinner on our second night. Both extremely good. Hope to return.
