Set amidst the splendor of the North Wessex Down close by Highclere Castle, the setting of the television series "Downton Abbey", in an area designated one of outstanding natural beauty. The house, which for over 100 years has been a country retreat, still retains the feel of a private home where the Hamilton family provide a warm and caring welcome with comfortable lounges, and bedrooms where you are pampered with fluffy towels, local filtered well water and home made biscuits. Bedrooms are individually decorated, many with king size beds, spa-bath and some with four poster beds. The Restaurant serves award winning food (2 AA Rosettes) with a choice of dishes to suit all tastes. Being only one hour from London, Southampton & Oxford, and located close to the M3 and M4 motorways Esseborne is a convenient location for visiting local attractions such as Stonehenge or Highclere Castle. The intimate atmosphere in this small Country House Hotel makes it ideal for weddings and celebrations. With the option of exclusive use available Esseborne can be the location of your perfect party.

A 'Great Escape' choice for our anniversary celebration.
Built in the late 19th century, this is a place of character and nicely located off the A343 road with ample parking.

We arrived and settled in to our allocated room, named 'Burley.'

The room was a good size and had tea/water facility with lovely home made biscuits. Ample wardrobe space and TV plus WiFi connection.

The windows were large with a nice view, not double glazed, but had a radiator. We observed 2 smaller heaters had been attached to the wall in the window location and later discovered the reason for this. Early evening it got quite cold, being January and additional heat was needed! We had to seek assistance to get the heaters working and for a while they emitted a dusty smell (presumably not used for a while)?
Shortly after arrival we enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea with delicious home made scones.
Our evening meal was most enjoyable with a good choice available.

Our problem arose the next morning when wanting to shower. The basin trickled only with warm water, then stepping into the shower the water could not be adjusted satisfactorily. At one point it gushed boiling water which could have had repercussions! The standing water in the bath part of the shower took a good hour before it drained away.

Our breakfast was very good and indeed the service throughout was excellent.
We did report our shower problem to the management for their attention.
We would certainly return if allocated a better room with compliant plumbing facilities.

Under the ownership of the 'Hamilton' family, there are 11 rooms in the main house, 6 in the Courtyard and 2 in the cottages. the garden overlooks farmland with sheep in the meadows. There is a nice herb garden, attractively arranged and an area with a giant chess game set out.
Plenty of nearby attractions to visit.

My wife booked the Esseborne Manor as a birthday treat for myself. Firstly, thanks honey, you did good.

The Esseborne Manor is a medium sized manor house, set in some lovely countryside. Sadly, being February in the Uk, we didn’t get to explore the surroundings quite as much as we would have liked. Instead we enjoyed the manor and all it could offer.

We had a room that was not in the main house. We stopped in “Kew”. This is a large room with a separate en-suite which includes a bath and shower. Everything was well presented and very comfortable.

We took afternoon tea which consisted of some delightful scones, cream and jam. This was accompanied by tea / coffee.

After a bit of R&R it was time for dinner. The 5 course taster menu was both of our choices. I’ve got mixed feelings about this choice. Whilst every course was absolutely delicious, and I know it was a “taster menu” but I found each dish to be quite small. I loved it but I didn’t leave the table thinking that I’d had 5 courses.

After a very restful night it was time for breakfast. Sadly I think I was feeling a bit worst for wear from the night before (nothing to do with our hosts) but my wife had the English breakfast which looked scrummy.

Before we knew it, our visit to Esseborne manor was over. I’d had a delightful birthday treat. All of the staff were very kind and friendly. The food had been delicious and the overall experience was one of calm and restfulness. It is just a shame that we couldn’t stay longer.

My wife booked an overnight stay as a Valentines night treat. She booked an upgraded package deal with a premium room that came with a four poster bed and spa bath. The package included wine and chocolates in the room, afternoon cream tea, 7 course taster menu dinner and breakfast.
The hotel is a lovely old country manor house set in extensive nicely kept grounds. The staff were attentive and friendly without being intrusive. The food was very good and the 7 course taster menu for dinner was an excellent dining experience. This came as part of our package, but as a stand-alone dinner option it would have been £55 per person (not including wine) and I'm not sure it would have been particularly good value at that price.
Bar prices were reasonable for this standard of hotel.
The general standard of decor was very good and our room and the public areas were clean and well kept, although some of the furnishings and carpets looked a little tired. However, this was in keeping with the period nature of the building and did not detract from the overall experience.
All in all a very enjoyable night away and the package deal was very good value for money.

It us difficult for hotels to re open with social distancing in place and maybe we have been spoilt by a recent stay in another establishment not far from this one that we felt managed these new measures far more effectively.
The reception area is very small and the hotel has put reasonable measures in place to try to help guests to socially distance and follow a one way route however the exit passes immediately past reception and on several occasions staff did not make any effort to maintain a 1m+ distance by moving away from the reception area so we could pass to exit.
Our room was an adequate size but smelt very very musty and decor is very dated. It really could do with a little updating. The shower took about 5 minutes to get any warm water in the mornings
Breakfast was good with a good choice on offer and cooked individually. Staff serving meals did wear visors to maintain Covid secure rules.
The outside areas are pleasant.
It is a shame our room and social distancing measures at reception were not maintained otherwise I would have considered a higher score.

This was an exceedingly well run country house hotel with all staff having a "can do" attitude. We were two couples on a Travelzoo deal which included two nights stay, full breakfast each day, dinner on the first night, tea and scones on arrival and in the pamper upgrade which gave us whirlpool bath and jet shower plus chocolates. There are also deals to be had with the local golf course if you book direct.

The restaurant was of the highest standards with linen table cloths and decent napkins. Good service, interesting wine list ( no too large but sufficient for all tastes), Good menu to choose from, an amuse bouche which went down well with our party. The food was so good that we booked a table for the second night rather than seeking an alternative further afield. An amazing chef so hold on to him or her!

We had a large upgraded room, extremely well equipped including a four poster bed and nice views into the courtyard. Ironing board, tea making equipment and instant response when we asked for an ice and an ice bucket for our bubbles.

A popular venue for afternoon tea an d we certainly enjoyed our cream tea an an ideal spot for us as we were using this as a base for a series of delightful walks on the chalk hills and woods that surround this area.

Full marks too for the hotel being hot on the corvid rules.

This is described as a hidden gem and it really is. Having booked direct we arrived to cream tea with a glass of champagne which was a great way to start the visit. Our room was spacious and light and airy (needed with the hot weather).

We had food there both nights and first night had the 7 course tasting menu. The food was superb, although they could review the wine list as the first two paired wines didn’t go well with the food.

Similarly with breakfast the food was superb and had a great selection. The servers all wore either fabric masks or plexiscreen masks.

The reception is small but they have added a screen and there is hand sanitiser along with a one way system so seem well prepared for Covid.

The grounds have a croquet set, ping pong table and giant chess set.

We spent the time there doing walks and the only let down is that you either need to drive or walk along the road a short way to start walks. They only had one walk which started at the hotel and would be good to have more listed that loop from and back to the hotel.

We chose Esseborne to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary with a private lunch for family and friends. Esseborne provided a beautiful setting in August with the garden and grounds looking spectacular and we were blessed with fine weather. Our pre lunch drinks were held in the garden conveniently just outside our function room. Service was friendly and discreet. The room was beautifully set up and we were able to add personal touches, flowers and decorations.

Lunch consisted of a buffet starter table with excellent choice of meat, fish, soup, salads. Sweets and cheese were offered in the same way with a choice of main course. Service was very professional and efficient. Wine flowed freely and coffee and tea, post lunch, was included.

Ian, and his family who run the hotel, made everything so easy for us making this occasion one we will always remember. Our guests were very impressed.

We stayed over in the Exeter Suite with a four poster bed and air conditioning. Very comfortable bed, huge room, hospitality tray and most importantly for us a stand alone multi jet power shower. Dinner courses were all served and to a very high standard.

Breakfast the next morning was one of the best we have eaten, cooked to order, not greasy and with great choice of options.

Ian Hamilton has a great product and we wish him and his family together with his lovely team all the success in the world, they more than deserve it!,,

Esseborne Manor never fails to please. The food is amazing, so much choice of starters incl soup, home made breads, salads, salmon, cold meats, lovely choice of roasts . Plentiful desserts so much choice, cheeseboard, fruit platter. I have an egg allergy so I was presented with vegan brownie and bakewell style cake and vegan ice cream. So mice to always see the same staff in attendance also. Nothing too much trouble. The only thing that I will say is that the website says £26 per person and I was charged £30, so maybe time to update the website to avoid surprises for anyone else!!

Superb hotel if you are staying in the area. It only has 17 bedrooms so not crowded at all or noisy and the grounds are beautiful. We stayed in ‘St Alban’s’ room and it was large and very comfortable and the bathroom was also large with a jacuzzi bath and lovely shower. The staff are extremely pleasant and attentive and the food wonderful. We will definitely go back to this great hotel. We used our Virgin Experience voucher for the 2 night stay which included a 7 course tasting menu for one of the evenings - one of the best meals we have ever had. We can’t recommend this hotel enough. P.S the wine list is limited but very reasonably priced and good quality.

6 females having a catch up and celebrating a birthday.
We booked the room and 7 course tasting package with afternoon tea and breakfast .

Greeted very warmly, shown to a lovely little drawing room where we naturally ordered a couple of bottles of wine ! and the time just went so relaxing and comfortable. Oh and wonderful homemade scones.

The rooms were clean and some would say dated but that added to the charm, tea and coffee in the room, hairdryer, iron so well equipped along with a jacuzzi bath, shower and usual vanity products.

The tasting menu was very good especially the risotto dish, it was presented as you would hope the table was laid very well we didn't opt for the wine pairing but we enjoyed a red and white wine .

Good breakfast options and the quality of the full english was superb.

The grounds are looking very pretty with the spring flowers now coming into bloom.

The restaurant was packed when we arrived at 2pm on Sunday it seems to be a very popular place for a roast dinner as lots of locals eating.

It is not a trendy/modern/up to date hotel but it is charming and the hosts especially Julie were so lovely with excellent service from friendly staff.

It's a bit remote to try to walk to the nearest town - and the roads are curvy and quite snug all over. You'd need a car or driver, rather than walk along the roads.
