Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Went to the breakfast with the elf, had a great time, a great selection to choose from for breakfast and the kids all had a fun time with lots to keep them amused. All the staff worked really hard to make this special.

Lovely place, friendly staff, room was clean, big comfy bed, nice & quiet apart from hearing doors close now & then (it's what you expected at a hotel), nice breakfast (self service), no heating in our room but no need for it as room felt warm, a few bit of wallpaper was coming off the wall but as it's near the bed you don't notice it much, tried to have a bath but water was not warm enough but was ok for a shower, used this as a stop over as going to Warner brothers studio

Overall a great experience staying at Shendish for 2 nights. Reading reviews prior to visiting we were a bit nervous and skeptical about what we were going to see when we arrived. The staff are wonderful. Reception staff could t be more helpful, especially to gentleman working on Sunday night, he was so polite and friendly. Staff in the restaurant were lovely too. The only food we had was breakfast. It was great, it’s a self serve and when we stayed the hot food was constantly replenished, was hot and delicious. The room we had was on the ground floor and was very spacious and clean. There is everything you need, kettle, coffee making facilities, towels, iron etc I’d definitely stay here again if I was in the area. There were some small things that stopped it being a 5 star review. Although the room was nice it could benefit from new carpet or deep clean as it looks a little tired, same with the one in the hall. Same with the furniture. The previous reviews I’d seen made me think the rooms ( they may have been in another area) hadn’t been updated since the 90’s. But we were ground floor in a standard double room and it was wear and tear from being a busy hotel, yes it could do with some TLC but didn’t impact the trip. The other thing was the TV was terrible, we didn’t spend much time in the room but when we wanted to relax before bed the TV randomly switches off. The signal on a few different networks (EE & Vodafone) wasn’t great in the hotel and the wifi is slow and unreliable. The wifi is free and not an option to upgrade

Booked as part of a deal to visit HP Studios. The hotel itself is lovely, with the room being spacious and clean. The beds were comfy and the shower very good! The staff throughout our visit were polite and helpful, whilst the breakfast was definitely worth getting up for. Positives above those already mentioned include the price: the deal made it very reasonable and we could not fault the value for money. The only downside was how chilly we found the room initially, having to use the electric heater stored in the wardrobe to take the chill off. Given the time of year, this wasn't too big an issue. We ate on site during our first night, and found the food tasty. Drinks made it pricey but nothing out of context of the area.

The reason I have given a 4 out of 5 is because I booked it as it said the minimum age was 18 to stay there, but that is not correct there were children staying and running up and down the corridors. All the staff that we encountered were absolutely fabulous, friendly and helpful. We stayed for two nights and the room was nice, comfortable, spacious with a lovely bed, the only thing we found was that even with all the lights on it was all mood lighting, you couldn't read by it! The hotel comes with WIFI which we found was not great, not sure if you can upgrade this, but we found it frustrating when trying to do searches. The location of the hotel is just fabulous, you are in a great green space with grounds to walk around, but you are also so close to being next to all the shops and restaurants of Hemel Hempstead, also getting to Harry Potter Studio is so easy, if that is why you are looking at this hotel.

Very disappointed with the entire stay . Meant to be a very special time as we were over in England with our daughter to pick up her wedding dress. From our very first step inside we knew it was not our type of accommodation. The smell and dirty carpet in reception was a big turn off . Receptionist was not very accommodating, as we arrived from Ireland by boat to Fishguard it meant we arrived at Shendish Manor 30 mins before the 3 o clock check in . We were told to wait in reception till 3 and the check in . Rooms were not up to our standard grubby and needed a good spring clean .

Stayed here as part of a Harry Potter world gift package, was a lovely setting and wonderful looking building, downside was a lot of noisy golfers outside the clubhouse and wedding guests stood outside the front smoking did not make for a great 1st impression. Reception smelt damp on arrival despite it being a lovely very warm sunny day. The walk to the room was along tired corridors with flaking paint, peeling wallpaper and flickering light bulbs. Once we got to the room it was a good size but very old fashioned furniture and stained carpet, the bed was clean and comfortable but 3 feet outside the window was a brick wall making it impossible to even see the sky let alone any views. Went out for dinner and on return went to the bar which lacked any atmosphere and was made to feel the bar staff were doing us a favour by serving us so took drinks to our room. Breakfast was busy but a good choice and plenty available. Some TLC needed here especially in the corridors. Overall I wouldn't choose to return, a nearby Premier Inn would probably be a better option

We used Shendish Manor as a base to visit Harry Potter Studios, honestly a fantastic stay. Our bedroom was clean and cosy, overlooking the garden and its many squirrels, also loved the way you had a staircase to get to the bathroom which made it special. The dinner we had was exceptional, not just tasting good, but presented beautifully and the breakfast was also great. All the staff were very friendly and always made you feel welcome especially the dining staff in the Orangey. One negative is not the hotel but the taxi we booked from reception, we were charged £30 for a 10 min trip to the Studios which was excessive, we used Uber on the return trip which was half the price. The hotel itself is stunning, set in beautiful grounds, perfect to walk dinner off, definitely will be using again.

I booked this through Holiday extras via the Harry Potter website for a visit to the studio tour. This hotel is advertised as luxury and looks lovely in the photos. I honestly wished I had checked Trip Advisor before booking, as I never would have. The hotel looks gorgeous from the outside. But once you’re in your room, you quickly realise that you’ve made a huge mistake. The reception area is gorgeous. But as you’re walking to your room, you see peeling wall paper, holes in the ceilings, worn curtains, old and dusty, peeling windows. Once inside the room it is dated. Not dated like an old building should be, but dated because the walls are mucky with black smudges. The carpets look dirty and frayed, the furniture is all mismatching, the curtains are hanging on by a few hooks. The bed smelled clean, but also very vinegary. Our double was just two singles pushed together, but there was no hook, so every time one of us moved or sat in the wrong place, the beds would part. There was only one plug outlet on one side of the bed. The television and lamps are all wired into the wall. There is no main light, you have a few lamps. Not at all easy to get ready in the evenings. The bathroom was terrible. A shower over the bath, which was incredibly slippery. When I tried to shower, there was only a dribble from the shower, no matter how much you fiddled with it. The bath plug was also jammed shut. My partner had to pry it open with a teaspoon! When we asked to change rooms, on the first evening, after I had attempted a shower, we were told they were fully booked. We tried to make the best of it because it was my partner’s birthday the next day and our visit to Harry Potter studios. That night we discovered that only one of the beds has a mattress topper. The beds were extremely hard and we both woke up with backaches. We have a firm mattress at home, so we’re use to a solid surface. These mattresses are just old. Harry Potter was brilliant. We got back and neither key card worked on the door. Back at reception and were told we were only booked in for one night. I had to get my booking confirmation from my phone to show them it was four nights. The keys were reissued. I asked again about changing rooms and was told they were fully booked. I honestly wished we had, had the money to go elsewhere. We’d booked other excursions over the remaining three days, so would have lost hundreds if we’d packed up and gone home. That night we tried the restaurant. I have allergies and realised I couldn’t have any of the mains from the menu. The initial hostess was very abrupt and told me there was no other option. However when the waitress came over, she explained that we could order from the bar menu. I managed to get a sandwich. We didn’t visit the restaurant in the evenings after this and just went out for dinners. The breakfast was included in our stay and it was lovely. If it wasn’t for the delicious breakfast’s, I would’ve scored this shambolic hotel a zero. The breakfast is a buffet style; full continental and cooked. You can have as much as you like. The staff at the hotel are generally good and polite. We encountered a rude lady on reception twice and a rude hostess at the restaurant. I will never return to the hotel. I have complained to holiday extras and asked that they remove this hotel from their recommended stays. It’s absolutely awful. You feel so disheartened once there and your whole visit is ruined.
