Shendish Manor Hotel & Golf Course offers a mixed experience, with service that fluctuates from friendly to sluggish, impacting guest impressions. While the cleanliness of the rooms and grounds is often acknowledged, some guests have expressed concerns over exterior upkeep and inconsistency. Noise and a need for renovation mar the rooms, despite their general comfort. The hotel's amenities and atmosphere receive varied feedback, with calls for updates in decor alongside praise for the staff and setting. Value is a contentious point, with guests feeling meals are overpriced and extra charges unwelcome. The location, however, is noted for its commuting convenience, despite occasional unpleasant smells.

We booked here through the Warner Brothers Harry Potter Studio tour. The tour times were all booked for the day we wanted to visit, BUT if you book at their site and get your lodging from them too, they bundle the lodging and tour tickets. Since we needed a hotel that night anyway, and had no flexibility to tour the studio another day, we booked this combo.

The hotel is gorgeous, set on lovely acres of verdant grounds. The lady at reception was so helpful and welcoming. We had a problem turning on the air conditioning, so she came to the room and got it going. The night we were there, a school was having their prom at the hotel, but there was no noise from rowdy teenagers.

Unfortunately, there was some noise that disturbed our sleep. We were on the ground floor, and whoever was in the room above us could easily be heard coughing, walking around, and watching television until late at night. The floors especially made so much noise. Had there been attention to sound when this wing was constructed, guests would be able to sleep better, and this review would be 5 star instead of 4.

The dining room prepared delicious food at fair prices and offered a good selection of items to choose. Breakfast the following morning was included in our room rate, and it was hot, varied, with a great assortment of food items. The table linens and utensils were spotless, and the servers (both for dinner and breakfast) were efficient, polite, and friendly.

The bed and bath linens felt, looked, and smelled freshly washed. The bathroom was clean and bright, and everything functioned as it ought. Plenty of hot water and good pressure.

Overall, we got a great deal by bundling this lodging with the studio tour tickets and would definitely stay here again if we return. We would, however, ask for a room on the top floor so we would not be kept awake by the upstairs guest walking around late into the night.

Stayed two nights here for a family wedding and some of it was great but other stuff not so great, lets start with great......
Really friendly efficient receptionists and a decent room (42), room was clean and comfortable and yippee it had aircon because it was a hot weekend, other wedding guests were on other side of hotel with no aircon and said rooms were very stuffy. Bathroom was clean and shower decent. We had drinks on the terrace on the Friday evening and it was very pleasant overlooking the garden. Breakfast on both mornings was good with a decent amount of choice.
Now the wedding celebrations... the food was really tasty, we had (being veggie freaks), a roasted tomato soup (gorgeous), a roasted veg stack with crushed herbed potatoes (scrummy) and a coconut pannacotta (great flavour but a wee bit firm), so full marks for food. More full marks go to a couple of the food waiting staff who when they found out us and some others were veggie and vegan went off and made sure that we got plenty of vegan canapes before the "do" got started.
Now the not so good stuff.....certain bits of Shendish need a bit of tlc, carpets taped up, tatty paintwork, easily fixed. Next some staff were great others not so, bar staff in wedding room were not very helpful with requests, in fact one was a right misery and on the Saturday one of main bar staff was very brusque and unhelpful, now I know it can be a tough job but the name of the game is hospitality isn't it?
Shendish is also a golf venue and some of the golfers think that they are Lewis Hamilton when they are driving their buggies, so watch yourself as they hurtle through the car park
I did fill in the survey that SM sent me and went into more detail about the "complaints" but no reply has been forthcoming.
Would I stay at Shendish again, of course I would the good outweighs the bad, but I would always ask for a room with aircon

I had to think really hard about posting this. My husband booked this hotel as part of a 50th birthday surprise. Looks beautiful on the outside. However, the hotel is tired and a little tatty. Our room had a beautiful 4 poster bed, high ceilings and gorgeous windows but the wallpaper was peeling off, the carpets and cushions were stained and the blind in the bathroom was hanging off and heavily water stained. The room boasts a power shower and the water pressure was brilliant but the cubicle was so small that I couldn't actually bend down to wash my feet without the door open.
The staff - and I really do mean ALL the staff - don't want to be there. They are completely disinterested and in one notable case at the reception desk, brusque to the point of rudeness. The food is overpriced in the restaurant and poor when you order bar food.
It being a birthday stay, I was really upset for my husband who had booked and paid for it.

We had previously stayed at your hotel in October 2023 and had a wonderful experience, which is why I chose to book the ‘Manor House Superior Double Room’ as a birthday surprise for my partner. The room’s description of “garden views,” “chocolates for guests,” and the appealing images on your website were key factors in my decision. Sadly, our experience didn’t match the promises made.

We were allocated Room 6, and upon arrival, we were met with a strong smell of food, likely due to its location directly above the kitchen. The advertised “garden views” turned out to be a view of the car park. While we requested to move rooms, we were told none matching our expectations were available, so we reluctantly stayed put.

Later that evening, we found black curly hairs on the bed. Upon pulling back the sheets, we discovered dozens more. Neither my partner nor I have black hair, so this was highly unhygienic and uncomfortable. After reporting this to the front desk, the staff member kindly provided new sheets, but they too were less than clean. We were offered a complimentary drink, but we declined, as we weren’t looking for compensation—just a clean bed.

Additionally, the television had no signal, and the internet was non-functional. When we raised this issue, we were told this “just happens sometimes.” Exhausted from travelling, we accepted it and went to bed, only to be woken early both mornings by the noise of bins being dragged out at 7:30/8am.

To make matters worse, there were noisy and disruptive guests on our floor on Saturday night, with shouting and banging, which further diminished our experience. While I understand this is not the fault of the hotel, it added to our overall frustrations.

For the cost, I expected a much more premium experience. I would strongly urge you to update the room description on your website, as we experienced:

• No garden view (only a car park)
• No TV signal or internet
• No chocolates provided
• No bidet as advertised

While the staff were polite and tried to assist, these shortcomings made our stay disappointing and far from what we had hoped for.

Response from Customer Service, Guest Services / Front Office at Shendish Manor Hotel & Golf Course
Responded 11 Feb 2025
Dear Guest, Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback regarding your recent stay with us. We truly value our guests’ experiences, and I’m very sorry to hear that your visit did not meet the expectations you had based on your previous stay with us. Please accept our sincerest apologies for the multiple issues you encountered during your stay. We are disappointed to hear about the unpleasant odor and the misleading view from Room 6. We understand how important these details are, especially when booking a special occasion like a birthday. Your feedback regarding the garden view and the room’s location above the kitchen is being passed on to our team to ensure future guests don’t encounter the same inconvenience. Regarding the cleanliness issue, we deeply regret that the room was not up to the standard we expect for all of our rooms. The presence of hair in the bed is absolutely unacceptable, and I completely understand how uncomfortable that must have been. We have raised this concern with our housekeeping team to ensure stricter cleaning protocols are followed, and we are reviewing the quality of our linen to ensure this does not happen again. The issues with the television and internet signal are equally concerning, and we are sorry that they were not functioning properly during your stay. While it’s true that some technical issues can occasionally arise, this should have been addressed and resolved promptly, and we regret that it wasn’t. We are working with our technical team to make sure these services are reliable for all future guests. Additionally, the noise disruptions, both from the early morning bin collection and noisy guests, certainly contributed to an unpleasant stay. While we cannot control guest behavior, we are evaluating ways to minimise disturbances and ensure a more restful environment for all visitors. I want to assure you that your feedback is incredibly valuable to us, and we will be reviewing the accuracy of the room descriptions on our website to ensure they reflect what we offer. We take your comments seriously and will use them to make improvements across our property. Thank you again for your feedback, and we sincerely hope to welcome you back for a much better experience in the future.

Written as a warning to future guests— Our experience at this hotel was nothing short of a disaster. We chose to celebrate our 6-year anniversary and stayed in room 39. No guest should be placed in this room until all issues are resolved, and that all rooms in this so-called “new wing” be reviewed for hygiene, health, and safety standards.

The carpet was heavily stained, and the decorative cushions and throw emitted a disgusting odor, suggesting they hadn’t been cleaned for years. They felt grimy! Worse, I suffered numerous, painful mite bites, indicating a severe hygiene problem.
I took very ill as a result of bed mites bites. This is completely unacceptable and disgusting. I raised my concerns with the Manager, who asked me to email them, which I did before checking out. To date, no response. And I am still recovering, having had to take the week off work as well as I have been so ill and continue to feel unwell.

While the staff were generally friendly, the hotel lacked energy and felt dreadfully drab. The shower had weak water flow, the bathroom heater was non-functional, and there were no shower caps (delayed delivery they advised when asked) or "Do Not Disturb" signs provided—we had to request one. I even saw a guest walking around the lounge in his socks, leaving his slip slops under the table.

We booked our stay using a Buy A Gift voucher and were told we’d be in the “new wing.” In which decade was this considered new? The decor was so outdated, bathroom tiles were misaligned, the curtain was hanging off by two hooks, and the TV and Wi-Fi were unreliable. The furniture was tired and marked.

Despite notifying the hotel in advance about our anniversary, there was no acknowledgment. The Thai green curry at dinner was clearly microwaved, mushy, as the food came out so quickly, very rushed. Breakfast was decent, though the pineapple in the fruit salad was brown.

The shocking hygiene failures!!!, poor maintenance, impersonal service make it impossible to recommend this hotel. Avoid at all costs for the sake of your health!

We arrived early morning for our trip to Harry Potter, on check in when we’re told that if we wanted to check in before 2pm we would be charged £20 an hour which we politely declined & asked for somewhere to store our bags… However reception then decided they would check us in after all! Bizarre.

Our room was cold, plug in heater left for us. The room itself was tired, tatty & in need of a complete refurb. It was however passable for a 1 night stay - the bedding was clean, as was the toilet.

We got Ubers at HP Studios which were reasonably priced.

Upon arriving back to the hotel we tried to book dinner, to be told it had already been booked for us at 6pm. However we weren’t asked this at original check in.

Dinner was again passable, we had a 3 course meal included with our booking. The menu was set & was very limited - Beef Burger, Gammon Steak & Thai Green Curry from memory. Restaurant staff were young and friendly.

Later in the evening my partner was looking for some drinks / snacks to the room. Called reception to be told no room service as we hadn’t left card details when we checked in which we were never asked for. He went to the bar for some soft drinks, asked for snacks crisps etc - no crisps at all. The hotel is situated up a windy, narrow road so local shops are quite a walk away, poor from the hotel tbh.

Breakfast was nice enough, cooked breakfast, selection of cereals, fruit, toast, pastries etc. Again nothing special but was fine.

Overall I wouldn’t stay again, nor recommend. I had read the reviews prior to staying, so I was nervous & my expectations were extremely low. This probably helped upon arriving, I had a look prior to arriving for hotels near by but as it was clean enough & only for one only, we stayed.

If you read the reviews prior to booking my advice would be don’t!

Avoid, Avoid, Avoid. This is a very tired hotel, with very smelly rooms and terrible customer service. We had a terrible experience over Christmas where we had a group booking. The room we were allocated smelt awful, and stank of smoke. When we reported it at the time the resolution was to spray a £1 toilet fresher (say no more). There were no alternative rooms that night so we had to get to sleep quickly (rather than enjoy) to make the morning come quicker. In the morning when we followed up on the issue they said they would need to wait to receive payment from Booking.com first so could not deal with the matter there and then. Since then we were initially bounced back and forth between Shendish and Booking.com without any one taking any responsibility. Shendish simply now not responding to calls (they rarely pick up) or emails. This hotel provides a very bad experience all round and I would encourage you to book at other hotels in the area.

We booked this through Virgin Experience Days as a little break away for one night. Difficult to find due to diversions in Hemel Hempstead for roadworks. As we went to our room there were lots of dirty glasses, drinks bottles, food leftovers on the floor outside some of the rooms, looked very untidy and unhygienic. Room was clean and tidy apart from a brown stain on the white duvet. View from the window was a walkway for the staff/public and a route for the big linen/towel bins to be wheeled along rickety concrete, which woke us at 7am. The cleaning staff were very noisy, chatting, laughing, slamming doors etc from 7am. A notice on the door through to where the rooms are, saying ‘people are resting so please keep the noise down’ was a bit of a joke really. Food was lovely, we had breakfast the next morning and was told on arrival it was between 8am and 10am. We went for breakfast at 9am and they had ran out of sausages. We were then told at 9.15am by a member of staff that they needed to clear the breakfast ready for the next function coming in for lunch! They wanted everyone out by 9.30am when there were still people arriving for breakfast! One guest complained to the staff, but they carried on clearing the plates etc. So many people were unhappy and refused to leave until they had finished eating and drinking. I won’t be going back. Such a shame as it’s in a beautiful setting, the grounds are lovely.

My Husband has relatives in Hemel Hempstead so it's easy and convenient to stay at Shendish Manor, 3 times in the last 6months. Each time all the Staff are extremely kind, caring and welcoming. Lisa and her son, Josh are really helpful, in the restaurant, Lisa remembered us from our recent visits, which was lovely and special.
The rooms are always immaculately clean and comfortable. All the doors are soft closing so there is no noise from doors banging closed.
The reception are is very comfortable to sit and drink coffee.
If you want a good comfortable bed, room and lovely friendly Staff then Shendish Manor Hotel is a must

We stayed for two nights at the manor back in September.

The suite we were given was very dated.

Opening dresser drawers was a hazard as they fell out and had you juggling to get them back in. We eventually just kept our luggage in our cases.

In the bathroom, we found a pubic hair atop the toilet, just behind the toilet seat & one more in the bathtub.

Under the bed, we found discarded rose-petals from the previous occupants.

I would expect the iron to be up to a higher standard than “Asda George Home Selection.” And for the ironing board to not be burned and full of holes.

Our receptionist upon arrival was a vibrant young lady who had a pleasant energy and a very helpful nature. However once the evening set in and the next morning came around, the receptionist was sadly replaced with an older battleaxe who was too busy fiddling with paperwork to even look up and make eye contact during enquiries. She made us feel like a burden, or a nuisance, rather than her customer.

We decided to take a stroll around the grounds, as the images online portrayed well tended gardens with very well maintained public spaces. Wow. We counted over 20 beer bottles, cans, WKD bottles and more scattered in bushes, the carpark, the woodlands, you name it, the place had literal trash on the floor. The grounds looked as though a frat party had come crashing through it the night before. Even the nicest area we could find, which was a wedding arch near a small trimmed hedge, was littered with food wrappers, confetti bags and even a flyer for a wedding that had taken place a week before.

Breakfast was brilliant on the first morning, however on the second morning, it was very clear that a different cook was on. Beans watery, unseasoned and diluted. Bacon burned on one edge and undercooked on the other. Hashbrowns still raw in the middle and sausages looking shockingly pale. Many customers noticed the massive decline in food quality from one morning to the next, and were observed picking up a hash brown, seeing the middle was still raw, and putting it back down.

And the finale of the stay. During our visit, we had booked two nights separately and wished to combine the bills of both bookings, to be settled all-together on the departure date. We were told at the desk this was perfectly fine, standard practice and we would be able to settle any and all bills, however we wish, at checkout. We inquired about this, as we had brought cash and wished to use that whenever possible. Turns out the front desk decided to just charge the card that was attached to the first booking, for everything. Thank you very much for that.

All in all, for the price we paid, we found Shendish Manor to be completely undeserving of its price tag, it’s rooms unclean and poorly maintained, the customer service inconsistent and the grounds neglected.
