Conveniently located on the esplanade this Victorian hotel has unique sea views and benefits from being on a level seafront position. The beach is close by and the shops and holiday attractions of the well-known resort of Ryde are only a short walk away. The hotel is also well-situated for buses, taxis, trains and the hovercraft, so offers the ideal base to travel all around the island as well as over to Portsmouth with its rich maritime history. The seafront position lends itself to some wonderful views from the restaurant and lounges - the perfect place to sit back and relax. A car is ideal for getting around the undulating roads of the Isle of Wight and there is a plethora of things to see and do for all ages. Whether touring historic houses or visiting natural adventure parks, watching the yachting action and festivities of Cowes week, or just relaxing on one of the islands many beaches, you are sure to enjoy the island’s unique charm.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Ideal and comfortable hotel with friendly and helpful people - our third stay this year. A lovely room with a view, excellent food for breakfast and dinner and the hotel is so conveniently located with all transport links close by: buses, trains, ferries and hovercraft. The Royal Esplanade is our go-to place on the island - we shall be beck in 2024!

Stay here for a night for business work . Room was tired plaster was missing from the ceiling , paint flaking bathroom was like going back in time, shower was like my nans, wood around the bath rotten by screen. Always double check your belongings , as your not guaranteed to get them back. Went to the restaurant and was told if I wanted the standard menu I could have it , now or if I wanted the 2nd menu there was a wait due to having 2 coaches in. I had a starter which was supposed to be King Prawns for £9.95 Pan-fried in a chilli garlic and basil ,with a warm facaccia.very nice I thought ,well what a disappointment when arrived ,a few prawns and a burn bits of toast.

Hello, Thank you for feeding back to us and thank you for choosing to stay with us here at The Royal Esplanade Hotel. This is unusual to read of such a low satisfaction score, our maintenance team will be upset to hear that there is a room which does not meet our high standards and they shall be informed immediately, along with our General Manager. I shall pass your notes back to our Kitchen Team to keep an eye on the toasted items leaving the kitchen and to research why the plated dishes did not meet expectation this time. Thank you again for feeding back to us and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again in the future.

Wonderful staff. First class service from Gemma and Bobby and the team. Attentive, friendly. A relaxed atmosphere with nothing too much trouble. It’s a historical building, sitting on land which was once the sea. There lots of island charm and informality without it being lacklustre or tacky. A great stay.

We had our wedding here and we couldnt have chosen a more perfect location, we cannot recommend this venue highly enough! From the first meeting to the wedding and the reception day itself, Bobby and her team made the whole day run smoothly from beginning to end, always on hand when needed and always with smiles on their faces. The decorations were everything we asked for and looked stunning! (I've added a couple of photos, but they really don't do the decorations justice) The rooms were lovely and clean, the food perfect.....nothing was ever too much trouble. Family and friends who attended the wedding all complimented the hotel, the staff, the food and how beautiful it looked.....We would highly recommend this hotel for any occasion, be it wedding, birthday or any other event, what ever the occasion you will get 5 star service.

Good location - rooms are a little variable I think. We booked via Expedia and despite getting confirmations of the reservation the hotel had no record of our booking, which was stressful. They did have a room for us - right at the top of the hotel which would not be ideal if you had any mobility issues as the lift does not run to all levels and is very small. The sloping ceiling also made the bathroom something of a challenge - I bumped my head and I am only short. Breakfast is fine and we had a meal at the hotel one evening which was good. Given the hotel is used by large groups they ask you to prebook a breakfast slot. Harry's Bar is a very pleasant spot for a drink.

Room with a view of the Solent & the pier. I stayed here for a couple of days & the staff are very friendly & I thoroughly enjoyed the stay. I was near the top floor & had the best view of the hovercraft come & go. The hotel is near the bus station, & the train station.

Excellent location for transport both to the Island and within it. Very helpful staff both housekeeping and conference facilities. Cooking very good. There is some noise on weekend evenings at the front of the hotel from the pub next door but it did not go on late.

Welcome to the 1970’s !! First and foremost I have to say the staff at this hotel are first rate, can’t recall the lady with the green eyes but she was awesome. However, the higher you go up the floors the more dated this hotel is… was like stepping back in time. I paid extra for a premier room which was ok. Shower was so slow as as you got into the shower your bumped your head as it was in the eves of the roof. Food, nothing like you see in pictures.. again think 1970’s, bland, tasteless and the same for the breakfast. We had booked for 2 nights but checked out after one and moved to Shanklin. However, can’t praise the staff enough.
