Detailed Reviews
9 adults staying at Yelfs Hotel B&B in Ryde.
Perfectly placed just 5 minutes from the ferry port, with their own private car park and they also have parking outside the hotel itself, free for an hour, or you can park after 6pm until 9am the next day.
The hotel itself is a little tired, as its an old property, with a lot of creaking stairs and floorboards, but the prices are reasonable. The hotel is clean and tidy.
In my room (20) the bathroom is ok but having a shower could cause a headache for those over 5’8’’ as the ceiling is pretty low. But the room itself is bright and spacious. There is a all day restaurant and bar next door so there is some noise as well, but easily overcome by closing the window.
Yelfs have a good selection of wine and beers and a great selection of food which I loved. Plenty of seating inside and outside as they have an enclosed court.
Breakfast was also great, from a full English to cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurt etc. or for those who just can’t eat that much you do get the option to have something less heavy. I opted for poached eggs done perfectly. Have to say Lee the wonderful lady who took our breakfast order was the best of the staff we came into contact with, and she made our stay more memorable. With a great sense of humour even when we all wanted different food for breakfast!
We will definitely be back.

So the bed is quite comfortable. My husband and I slept really well, surprisingly. Good pillows. You’re paying for the location as it’s right on the high street and walking distance to the promenade and bus station. Others have complained on WiFi issues but we had no problems there, including uploading photos. Breakfast is included in the rate. Very clean. Great hot water pressure in the shower. Able to leave luggage for free.
Honestly? This place is a dump for a supposed 3 star hotel. Super faded, cheap carpet leading up the stairs. Our room, 6, was large but not the sea-facing room I had asked twice before in the booking.com app and once on the phone. Cheap carpet again. We had a broken chair in the room upon arrival, there are stuff marks on the lower side of the bed frame, missing art on the walls, and there is a very dingy bathroom. Breakfast is generally a disaster with not enough staff and people around us it seems waiting quite a bit of time for their food. At least there is a veg option. Warning sound travels from the lower bar/pool table into the room.

My colleague and myself were booked into Yelfs fo a week for training Key workers.
The bedroom was clean, with crisp white sheets and towels, tea and coffee making facilities also available..
Breakfast was continental style left outside your room, due to the pandemic, brioche, a yogurt, juice and fruit, a full English would have been nice but the circumstances dictated that it was not possible.
For the training we were supplied with tea at the start and mid morning followed by a buffet lunch and hot food for the final day of each group.
I cannot comment on the bar and restaurant as they were closed due to the pandemic.nor the cost as it was paid for.
The staff were polite and helpful

So upon arrival I was greeted by a lovely receptionist and check in was really easy. I was tired and frazzled so was quite happy to have access to the room. Bad news was that I had to navigate two flights of stairs (one of which was extremely tight & steep) with a large suitcase not ideal. Very glad that the room was not on the main high street so a bonus. However on entering the room I first saw a small blue suitcase and a pair of trousers. There was already someone in my room. Left suitcase and went to complain at Reception. Receptionist was mortified on what had happened and upgraded me to a room on the first floor as my room had been given to another guest. Bad news was that it was on the main high street but she assured me it should be quiet on a Thursday evening. She also brought down my case and overall the only gem in my stay
Let me assure you that this was the worst sleep ever and I am now travelling tired and fairly annoyed. Singing and chanting went on till gone 1am. Also the bed was extremely uncomfortable due to the improvisation of mattress protectors (see photos). Also the room was tired and had a funny smell in the bathroom (see picture)
So though tired I thought great breakfast, the last way to impress a guest. All I can say is badly organised and poor customer service. I didn’t know where to sit so hung about by the door. Once someone did appear I was told to sit anywhere which seemed odd in these times of COVID. Once seated I placed my order and waited. Cooked breakfast arrived but no tea, toast or orange juice. The server asked me if I wanted any sauces to which I responded no but I would like my tea. Response ‘oh did you order any’. ‘Yes I did when I placed my order originally. Transpired that the piece of paper went in the bin
So overall I am severely disappointed as I have always been a faithful customer to the Yelf but this was appalling and not worth the money spent. My advice would be to give it a very wide berth until it sorts its underlying issues out

As many reviews state, this is a very tired hotel. This would not be a problem if it was clean with good service but unfortunately it wasn't. Bedroom basic. Sagging bed, dust on skirting boards, inches of dust on top of wardrobe (which attached itself to our case), rips in greying net curtains and grubby corners in bathroom. The windows do not open much and the sash cord one was broken, dirty around window edges.
Rooms are not cleaned and checked daily, you need to request this. We asked for a towel change after 2 days, this was done and the bins emptied but dirty coffee cups not changed and room not vacuumed. The next day we ask for more toilet roll and new cups; when we arrived back after a day out this had not been done. A tired cleaner explained she was the only one doing all the rooms. I did have a strop at reception as it seemed ridiculous that we had to request toilet paper twice!! I gave up on the cups and just rinsed one out.
Breakfast was a slow affair, again lack of staff and when they did appear they were not attentive to who had just arrived. Apple and orange juice were not replenished at the self service table until requested. Breakfast itself was ok, not great.
Carpets in communal areas are worn and threadbare; I overheard a member of staff saying they had not been changed in 20 years - I just hope they had been properly cleaned at some point!
Rooms at front are very noisy at night.
There is obviously a staff shortage in many places on the island however having paid over £400 for 4 nights I would expect some basic standards of service. I would not stay here again or recommend it.

We have going here for the past 12 years and have always enjoyed staying, however this year it was different. Yes we arrived early before check in however the lady on front of house was nothing short of "abrupt & rude" telling us to come back at 2.30. This place had just been taken over recently and nothing had changed, I am assuming that during lockdown the rooms had been closed down and on opening up they hadn't bothered to clean or dust (there was brick dust under the desk where work had been carried out). The extractor fan in the bathroom had not been cleaned out. Breakfast was okay but no fruit or pastries and was buffet style, the staff were friendly. Stair carpets were badly worn and need replacing soonest. Evening meals were fair on the 2 nights we ate in and the night manager was a very helpful person. We will certainly be looking to stay elsewhere in the future until the place is updated. Our main criticism was of the lady on reception who clearly needs to spend some time practising her customer service skills, she knows who she is!!!!

I’ve booked into the hotel about an hour ago, no fault of the hotel I booked a single bed not realising it was not a double. I went down and spoke to the very helpful receptionist where I offered to pay for an upgrade and she kindly said; you don’t need to do that will give you a free upgrade how helpful. I come back to my room and looked at some of the reviews and I’m not sure where they’re coming from. The receptionist that I talked to was very professional and treated me with decency and did everything they could to help.
I would highly recommend this hotel.

I stayed at the Yelfs Hotel from 20th - 27th June 2023
I had never stayed there before so I didn't know what to expect
The Reception Staff were very friendly and polite
The Lounge Area was tastfully decorated and plenty of seats to relax in
I was staying in Room 20 on the second floor (there's no lift) so I had 4 flights of stairs to negotiate
The staircase on the stairs going up to the rooms was showing signs of wear on the edge of every step.im sure this is known to the Owner but there's a lot of carpet so obviously it will take awhile to change it
I had booked a double room just for myself as I like a lot of space
Bedding was clean and fresh and there were the usual Tea/Coffee making facilities. One bonus was having pkts of Biscuits which was a nice touch
The Bathroom was clean and fresh towels provided
Nice size Television and plenty of Storage space
A Fan, Iron and Ironing Board were also provided in a nice sized storage Room which also acted as a Wardrobe
Breakfast in my Case was an additional charge but it was excellent value. There was a selection of Cereals, Toast both Brown and Whitewhich you Toasted yourself through a moving link Toaster
Good selection of Jams, Marmalade and Butter
Good selection of Fruit Juices and also Iced Water
The Cooked Breakfast was fresh and very tasty and you had a selection of items to choose from and the number of items you wanted on your plate
There were a few alternatives but I went with the Cooked Breakfast
Tea or Coffee was provided and the Waitresses were attentive, polite and friendly
There was also a Lunch and Dinner Menu but on the Lunch Menu there was only Sandwiches, Jacket Potatoes but no proper Lunch Cooked items yet for the Children's Menu there was a choice of Burger & Chips, Fish & Chips, Fish Fingers and Chips perhaps it would be an idea to have Cooked items for Adults too
Drinks and the Food was served in the Lounge and Lounge Bar and there's also seating outside or in the Conservatory where you can have a drink and food
The Dinner Menu had a good choice and I had a lovely Sunday Roast Lunch and on the Monday I had a very good Fish and Chips
Overall the hotel is a comfortable place to stay and relax
There's easy transport connections to various places around the Island you just need to be aware the the Hotel is about 2/3rds of the way up a steep hill but take your time, stop and browse in the shops and it makes it a lot easier. The Hotel is one of the oldest Coaching Inns in the Isle of Wight so changing areas in the Hotel takes time
Overall I enjoyed my stay and the Staff were brilliant there's just some cosmetic things that need to be done with the Stair Carpets and some of the rooms decor
I will definitely visit Yelfs Hotel again this year

Staff very nice but that is where it ends. Our room was in an annexe across the road from the main building. It had to be accessed by multiple doors with keypads. We had an interconnecting door so there was no sound-proofing between us and next door. The room itself was tired, to say the least. Horrible blue doors, old handles which turned the wrong way. Old fashioned pine furniture but probably the worst part was the bathroom. It looked at least 30 years old with a horrible, small and very dirty shower cubicle (there were 3 long dark hairs in it plus dirt in the door runner). The toilet had a dubious looking brush next to it. There was dust, the floor was dirty and there were cobwebs. We stayed 2 nights (I nearly went home after 1st due to noise from next door) and the only saving grace was fresh linens which made the room feel a little cleaner. Breakfast was nice but I would NEVER grade this a 3 star hotel.

There is a car park, but it is round the block. Initially when you get there there is limited waiting on street parking in Union Street ( this can get busy as it is the popular street in Ryde). But park up and book in and they will then give you a sticker for your car window and give you directions. They own another block of apartments opposite the main Yelfs and the parking is behind this ( you get a door code) and you then walk back via the other building.
They store luggage in the reception room, which is always locked when not attended. We left out luggage there and it felt safe.
Yes we do have family rooms at Yelf's able to accommodate a family of 5.
Do contact us directly for more info.
Very good
