Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Had a great relaxing few days in this dog friendly hotel. The staff were amazing, very engaged, friendly and helpful. The hotel and bar has a great atmosphere, and full of life. Lovely location especially for walking the dog in the early morning or last one at night. The menu for both breakfast and dinner was full of interesting dishes. Served well and tasty. Will definitely go again.

Due perhaps to the age of the hotel, the water pressure was awful, so that showers were cold unless the bath tap was run for quite a while. I heard other guests had had the same problem. There is little soundproofing between rooms, so that we could hear our neighbouring room chat late at night. You are above a bar if in room 6, but it does close at 11pm, but then you can hear punters in the street below! The beds were comfortable, breakfast was good and staff friendly, but we couldn't relax and felt tired after a 2 night stay! Dinner was very average, sadly. We mentioned these points to the manager, so hope something can change.

Long list of issues - we rejected the first room (for which we’d paid extra, apparently one of their ‘feature double’ rooms). I tripped on the step down into the room - for which there was no warning, although there was a warning about hot water in the bathroom - isn’t there supposed to be hot water in a bathroom? Stained carpet (why use a pale colour if you are going to leave stains for all to see), stained chair. Dingy lighting, very shoddy decoration with large holes (goodness knows what wildlife would creep in there later), greasy marks on window, daylight showing through the gap between the window and wall, torn/worn out blind in bathroom, all pull cords greasy & discoloured, blocked sink, chipped & marked paintwork on walls and furniture. Plus to cap it all a very spooky feeling felt by us both. Having been promised ‘indulgent luxury’ in the online site, this was severely lacking. We were then offered a choice of the other ‘feature double’ room - equally dingy, pealing plaster, and several ‘superior double’ rooms, and we chose a slightly better looking and feeling double at the front of the building (no reduction in our charges though). BUT on closer inspection, thick black gunk all around each window frame, clearly hadn’t been cleaned or decorated for years, each wall had marks, 1 lamp not working, large discoloured crack across basin, insufficient toiletries, no soap or shower gel (they weren’t expecting anyone to be in the room apparently), another stained carpet (same pale colour in all rooms!) & marked chair, dirty phone, small radiator in bathroom only 1/3 warm, v noisy fan in bathroom bunged up with fluff and dirt, flush not working properly, dodgy lamp switch, dirty pull cords, no bathrobes as promised in blurb, no instructions on coffee machine, no instant coffee alternative, radiator behind heavy curtain so you choose either you have privacy but no heat coming into the room, or no privacy but heat. On the plus side the bed was comfy and it was quiet. The staff were pleasant. Having been informed on arrival that we could choose our evening meal from the full a la carte menu rather than a restricted one, we were looking forward to a tasty meal. My husband’s first choice of meal was not available - we were informed about 5 minutes after ordering. This in itself was strange as we were eating quite early in the evening. His second choice ( steak) was swiftly chosen, and about 5 minutes later the waitress tried to surcharge us an extra £8 for the steak - no mention of this anywhere on the menu, and we had been told we could choose ‘anything’. There then followed a number of visits to our table by different members of staff, talking about a ‘misunderstanding’ (??) about this. We were even told my husband’s first choice should have had a surcharge on it too! It was almost comical if we hadn’t been rather cheesed off already about the rooms debacle. I almost lost my appetite over the whole episode.

Shepherd Neame should be ashamed to have their name on this place. The staff, though perfectly pleasant were embarrassed by the state of it - "Its like Fawlty Towers, its falling to bits" and "Oh we do have noisy rooms, and people complain all the time", were just two of their comments. The food is diabolical, we didn't even bother with our prepaid breakfast and instead went to the very nice café across the road for some proper coffee and decent eggs and bacon. Dinner was just too awful to even describe....pork cheek and black pudding? Two lumps of blackened meat of unknown origin with half a black pudding surrounded by baked beans for £8? Yuck, wont even bother to mention the rest, but rest assured it would not be allowed to be served at Wandsworth Prison. Our bedroom was OK, pretty dusty and unloved, bed reasonable although pillow were for us rather hard. We had an attractive view of scaffolding and dirty refuse bins. However the real horror was finding that there was no water in the basin or bath, a bath that seemed to have to be filled via the shower if there even had been any water flowing. So foul food, sticky tables in the dining room, worn carpets, dirty rooms, no shower, basin or bath. AVOID.

We stayed here as we visited Sissinghurst Castle, absolutely no complaints for us, room and stay were sufficient with a decent breakfast, it is what it is a very historic establish with extremely accommodating and friendly staff, if you prefer plastic with indifferent staff at the likes of Premier and Travelodge the this is not for you, but if you prefer an old style town centre hotel with locals serving beer and food then make the effort, we did and it was fine.

Booked the hotel for the 08/08/2023 for the night . Wish we hadn’t. Attractive entrance to period property but that’s where it stops . Was given a tiny room 9 at £150 for the night. Can only be described as filthy . Here we go - large star crack in sink , bath has be deeply gouged and could cut your feet, mould , long stop stains and tooth paste dribble down door frames, tea stained down entry door of room , filthy skirting boards , revolting stained towel . After complaining and the hotel manager in agreement we changed to their best room with four poster . Room still dirty and was bitten by fleas or bed bugs 4/5 times .
