My husband and I were visiting England from the United States on business and decided to take a couple of days to explore Kent. I poured through dozens of hotels, inns and airbnbs to try to find what I had in mind - a peaceful, countryside escape. Then, using Google maps, I found “a dot” out in the green. It was the Updown and it couldn’t have been better if I had conjured it myself. We booked the Gardener’s Cottage for 3 nights. It was private - perfect for getting remnants of work done - had beautiful views all our own, a huge bar cart of tempting choices, the most comfortable king bed, a great rain shower, coffee and tea, a full kitchen, and homemade biscotti to greet us. The room is absolute heaven! We booked the all inclusive package which included both breakfast and dinner. The first night was steak night - to start my husband had the fish chowder and I had a bitter green salad. We both had the steak and for dessert - a lovely bruleed rice pudding heavy with rum. We were pleasantly surprised by the incredible quality and deliciousness. The dining room was busy yet still intimate. The breakfasts were beyond delicious. Fresh croissants and pain du chocolate, strong coffee, fresh squeezed blood orange juice to start. We both had the eggs one morning, the other mornings the yogurt with granola and sourdough. What a perfect way to start our mornings! Thursday night we had dinner with friends at the Mermaid Inn - beautiful and historic - an hour away in Rye and worth a visit for the history to see the bar. I had considered staying there but I was so glad I didn’t! I prefer the breathing room and the beauty of the Updown country setting. Friday night we had dinner back at Updown. We did not want the set menu as bothof us were not in a lamb mood (although we saw it brought in by the chef that morning!). My charcuterie plate was fantastic - especially the pickled pumpkin(!). My husband had the beef pappardelle and loved it. I had the aubergine Milanese and found it a bit too oily for my taste. The rhubarb trifle was so outstanding for dessert. The staff were always friendly, prompt, and helpful. I’d say our only regret was that we didn’t have time to use some complimentary wellies and explore the grounds! It’s obvious how much care has been put into the thoughtful details of this inn. I’d rate it 20 stars if I could. We will definitely be back!

My husband and I had the most fantastic lunch today. The setting is utterly beautiful but not teased within an inch of its life - just glorious! We walked around the lovely gardens with our glasses of rosé and felt very relaxed and at home - it is certainly not pretentious, just delightful! The staff are so lovely - professional but extremely warm and friendly - especially Leah and Meg - thank you both, you made our lunch extra special. The wine and food were delicious - my husband had the vegetarian pumpkin dish which he absolutely loved and I had the scrummy roast pork with roasties, greens and cheesy leeks - all in all the most marvellous lunch. Wish we could have stayed all afternoon drinking rosé in the garden, but since it was so hot we went for a walk on the beach in Deal. We’ll most definitely be back!

We stayed at Updown for two nights on 30th and 31st August. The room is faultless with everything you could possibly need. The bed in room 2 two is huge, the mattress comfortable and the bedding white high thread count perfection. The room and beautifully kept gardens are the perfect place to completely relax. There are also three beautiful ground floor communal spaces to enjoy with an honesty bar, small library and TV. There is a radio in each room, as well as a generous array of good quality toiletries in the beautifully clean bathroom. The tea tray contained high quality teas, coffees and sparkling/still water and they leave fresh milk outside the room each morning. The towels were fluffy and white and there are daily newspapers in the communal lounge for those who really do not want to leave the property. We spent the first afternoon in our room and it was SILENT. The only view from the bed were the trees gently swaying in the breeze. These owners really have thought of everything..... We enjoyed one breakfast in the dining room and one in our room. They brought over from the kitchen exactly what we asked for at the exact time we had ordered it for. You can't ask for more than that. On our first night it was "steak night" and the young and enthusiastic team managed the completely full house admirably. The set menus are great value, some including paired wines by the glass. On the second night we both had chicken which was perfect and my husband said his starter of chicken livers, lardons, figs and fresh sage on crostini was one of the best things he had ever eaten. The light, lemony dressing on my green salad and new potato sides was amazing. I want to make a special mention of the front of house manager, who was able to speak knowledgeably about the menus and make sure everyone went home happy, and also the cocktail mixologist who really appeared to know his stuff. All in all this place fully deserves to thrive and appears to be doing so. We had a wonderful time and will return. Sorry no pictures as we forgot to take any!

We had a pleasant evening because of the pretty woodland setting and garden but, having read a glowing review by the food critic Grace Dent when this restaurant opened, we were expecting more. The staff are all very young, very sweet and helpful but at the beginning we were not left with a menu while sitting in the garden. The daily printed menu itself is very confusing not making the price clear for the three-course meal at all (£30pp) and throwing in a sharing option at £100 if you like veal. There is only one starter, one main and one dessert with some pre-meal nibbles as well. As a pescatarian, I had to ask what was available. I was offered a stuffed courgette which was tasty. My husband is not a great steak eater and said the bavette was underwhelming. As there was no bitter available to drink because they ran out after a wedding, it wasn't a good experience for him. The drinks menu is pricy. I thoroughly enjoyed the homemade bread and we both loved the panna cotta with berries which was delicious. Those seated at tables for four looked fairly comfortable but the tables for two are so small, they have to have a side table to accommodate everything. The seats have very low backs which are not ideal. Access to the public toilet is through the middle of the kitchen. All in all, Updown Farm Restaurant is in a beautiful setting but it'a all a bit upside down in its delivery.
