The room was lovely with high ceilings, a big comfy bed and a nice bathroom. Again, everything was clean and although the weather was hot the double aspect windows both opened which meant we could get a nice breeze through the room.
As the price was so reasonable, we didn't really have high expectations for dinner. We had calamari, chicken wings, then we both had the seafood linguine, then cheesecake, all washed down with a couple of pints and a bottle of Rose and the food was excellent! However the best was still to come - BREAKFAST. All elements of my full english were perfect and delicious and hot and fresh and the toast, juice, drinks were plentiful. The avo/bacon/egg breakfast was also perfect. We will definitely be back for this again.
We left having been away for 24 hours but it felt like we had been away for days. We will definitely return to the Royal Hotel to stay, or even visit for dinner, and definitely for breakfast. The £99 deal was an absolute bargain and we will not hesitate in recommending The Royal Hotel to others.
The hotel and restaurant throughout was spotlessly clean, as was our very comfortable room. The hotel is situated right on the beach and a few minutes walk to the town centre. Because our room was near the main road, we did get woken by noise from the passing traffic, but that was the only thing about the room that was not good.
My only small criticism I have is that whilst during the current covid problems there obviously has to be safe guards in place, but a no entry sign on the front door leading to the hotel seemed strange and maybe they expect guests to drag their luggage through the other entrance which is the restaurant including stairs. Also a nice touch would of been, if the female checking us out who I think was a manager had actually bothered to enquire if we had a nice stay or was everything ok and would of been a nice end to our stay lovely stay.
Negatives - very low armchair in the bedroom, to the point that we avoided using it as we struggled to get out. If furniture is there for an 'image' but not practical, please get rid of it. I'm never comfortable with only 1 loo roll in the bathroom, it makes me feel a lack of hospitality spirit. There were teas and coffees provided but no bottled waters. I had to ask for these. Breakfast service felt a bit chaotic and slow even though we had to book a time slot. Actual food was enjoyable, filtered coffee was very poor quality. We asked for an americano as an alternative, only to be told that the machines are not switched on until 10am. However, even under these restrictive times, breakfast did not feel value for money as there was no fruit offered, cereals or yogurts.
So when you put these negatives all together, the room rate is expensive as it does not justify the experience.
The food was very disappointing. I had bangers and mash. The sausages were OK but I was not convinced the mash was made with fresh whole potatoes. It tasted like it may have been reconstituted. The cabbage had no flavour and was watery. I was not offered any condiments such as mustard or ketchup.
The person who came with me had crayfish and crab linguine. They told me there was little crayfish and they could not find any crab in it. As the hotel is located next to a stall that sells fresh crab I find this surprising.
For dessert there was Eton Mess on offer. However no fresh strawberries were used to make it. Instead there was strawberry compote not made from fresh strawberries. As fresh strawberries were still readily available in the shops I find this amazing for a four star hotel. We decided to forgo desserts as we did not want Eton Mess made with mush rather than real strawberries.
It felt like they had employed a chef who was used to cooking school dinners or who was not being given the budget to buy fresh produce.
The social distancing was really good from the outset there was 1 entrance use of antibacterial products as well as very caring helpful staff.
We were directed to the check in and told the booking times for our meals, then directed to our room which had everything you could want.
Both the spotless bedroom and luxurious bathroom made us feel at home, we had a sea view, large wardrobe and television.
I can highly recommend the Royal Hotel.
Staff were good and efficient.
Booked 2 weeks prior to visit and there was no high chair as requested which meant sitting in the upstairs room alone- this made us feel as though children were not welcome during the day time. Also very little atmosphere in a quiet and empty room. Unfortunately all outside tables were occupied, which is frustrating when booked so far in advance and then having to sit (what felt) ‘out of the way’.
Food was good and served quickly. Chicken schnitzel was very nice.
Had very dirty glasses served for water which had to be returned and swapped- which concerned me during COVID times!! Hopefully the filthy marks were just water stains?
Staff who greeted us seemed stressed and did not show us to our table but just said “you’re inside”.
Quite an odd experience, lacking atmosphere, made to feel like a burden which is unfair when this lunch had been booked two weeks in advance.
Based on my visit today I wouldn’t return and would be sharing my experience with others.
The service was appalling! To start we were told we couldn’t order kids roast dinner or swap new potatoes for extra roast potatoes. This was then corrected and we were told by another waitress they did do kids roasts (although no price was given for the kids portion) we wrongly assumed it was be the same price as a kids meal advertised however it was considerably more. When we asked if we could have a Yorkshire puddings with a roast pork we were told it would be a charge of £1.50 which is ridiculous on a £14 roast dinner!
The food overall was nice however the potions were all small at £15 for beef and £14 for pork and £7.95 for a tiny kids portion.
The staff were cold, they didn’t understand their own menu and we were never asked if our meal was ok or if we wanted any sauces.
Service goes a long way and we could have forgiven the portion sizes had we felt more welcomed and been given a little but more attention.
Over all hugely disappointed and expected more for a nearly £90 Sunday dinner!!
