Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Stayed in the Boathouse Apartment and first impressions were excellent but that didn’t last and the support from the Hotel reception was pretty mediocre I really liked the location and the bed was excellent, very comfortable but very little headroom upstairs and just that the place was looking a bit tired The bits that spoilt it for me were: The balcony door on the top floor had no key and was unlocked so was unsecure which made me somewhat anxious. I phoned reception on the first day and was told they would speak to housekeeping and get straight back to me, I stayed there for 2 nights and never received that call back. Two of the lights in the downstairs shower/bathroom didn’t work and they were the lights directly in front of the mirror. The lights behind you above your head worked but it meant your face was always in shadow when using the sink which was frustrating Lovely little tea/coffee making station but the glasses were stuck solid to the tray so didn’t seem very clean The staircase to the upstairs bedroom and balcony is very very steep and narrow so takes some negotiating if you want to keep your footing as the steps are very narrow from the halfway point downwards as they curve round the wall. I think the blurb mentions steep steps but it dosent prepare you for just how steep and narrow they are, they reminded me of a pull down loft ladder The shower downstairs looked excellent but lacked power/pressure so was disappointing and the grout had come away in several places so it leaked pretty well I ended up staying out most of the time and just used this place to sleep but I was disappointed as I was so looking forwards to enjoying the view from the upstairs balcony but not being able to secure the property did cause me anxiety. Any of these things may not bother you and you may be able to climb the stairs like a mountain goat but they were a big deal for me and if I’d know beforehand would have booked somewhere else. I did raise the points with reception at checkout (same lady I’d spoken to originally) and got an apology but no real explanation Don’t think it’s somewhere I will go again sadly

This is a very comfortable hotel with lots of character. If you're staying in the summer I'd strongly recommend paying a bit extra to get a room with an ocean view balcony, as it really makes the trip. The great weather was a bonus, but regardless we'd not stay anywhere else when we visit Whitstable.

We had a great night stay at the Hotel Continental. Our room was cosy with a nice balcony. Dinner was excellent, as was the full English breakfast served by friendly and efficient staff. Would highly recommend this hotel, added bonus of free parking to rear. Will return in the summer ☀️

Just had a great stay at the Hotel Continental in Whistable. The room was very comfy with a balcony and sea view . The service given throughout the hotel was of a high standard. We enjoyed our dinner and breakfast and would definitely recommend it . We are definitely going back and already rebooked.

Instead of our annual meeting with friends in London, we invited them to Whitstable. We always stop for coffee at the Continental and loved the look of the three bedrooms with balconies, so we were really pleased to book them. The staff were really friendly and our rooms were ready so we could drop our cases in at 11.30 and use the hotel’s free car park. The rooms were bright, clean and modern, everything you needed included, hairdryer, magnifying, kettle, tea, biscuits and much appreciated binoculars to look at the fantastic views. The bed, the bedding, pillows and towels were all top quality. Our friends loved it so much they cannot wait to return. Thanks to all the staff

Great hotel - really friendly staff, especially the barman, live music in the bar area, and breakfast is excellent quality. Very good beds and shower. Only negative: Could hear the next door room when they were loudly talking, and doors slamming above, so if you want a completely sound-proof hotel this isn't for you, but this hotel isn't trying to be comparable to your tower block new-build Premier Inn.

We were grateful to have found The Hotel Continental, situated right at the Harbour. The hotel is adjacent to the beach, the broadwalk and nature trails, offering expansive sea views from every floor. Don’t be discouraged by the unassuming and slightly well-worn exterior, the interior focuses on all the right elements. Fresh paint and contemporary design elements demonstrate a property well taken care of. The deluxe double sea room was great value for money. They balanced superior accommodation without trivial luxuries and the combination worked great. A warm room with clean comfortable bed and amazing view of the bay. The bathroom was newly renovated, warm towel radiator and overnight personal supplies. The shower had good water pressure and temperature. The wardrobe and beverage center was simple and refreshingly considerate. Linens were soft, clean and comfortable. It met our needs with thoughtful quality and we look forward to returning in the future.

Not accommodating at all. One thing vegetarian on the dinner menu - £17 for a butternut squash risotto. We politely asked if the chef could make us something else vegetarian, as I couldn’t eat risotto… the chef moaned about us to the reception in front of us & the reception confirmed “chef can’t make you anything else, as it’s his first day back from holiday” I then ask, well can I see the vegan menu/allergy menu? “We don’t have one”. I was made to feel really stupid for even asking… Good luck eating there if you have any food intolerances. When you’re paying a lot of money to stay somewhere, you expect to be able to eat dinner there!! Not a progressive hotel at all. No lift for anyone who may find the stairs too much - narrow stair case. Not very inclusive hotel at all. I wouldn’t stay here again, neither would I recommend it.

Very unwelcoming! No atmosphere. Restaurant food average but with high prices… Restaurant service poor and not very attentive , empty glasses , no check back etc. Could have done with a little music in the bar/ restaurant area to make it feel more atmospheric!
