Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Room 1 where we stayed, you couldn't shut the bathroom window properly, leaving up to an inch gap. It was cold at night, and we couldn't use the Aircon to stay warm for the noise. I mentioned it gently next morning and got a strong idea they knew of the problem, but no sense my mild complaint was going to activate them to do so. A shame, as the room, the bed and the people at breakfast are really nice and welcoming.

We have stayed here a few times and it is a lovely hotel in a great location opposite the sea. It is dog friendly and made our dog very welcome in the bar area and orangery restaurant. Staff are very pleasant and helpful. My only complaint (if you can call it a complaint) is that bath/shower gel was not replenished on our three day stay and had to nip around to Tesco to get some bath gel. Apart from that a lovely stay and look forward to next time. Breakfast is excellent as is the evening dinner.

Booked a one night stay for 3 in a family room on a Dinner, Bed & Breakfast basis. Very pleased with the helpful service given to my Wife when she made the telephone booking. Checked in around 2.30 pm on Sunday, was greeted by a very helpful lady on the desk, and this set the tone for our short stay, as nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We enjoyed a lovely 3 course evening meal with excellent food and very prompt service, a good nights sleep in a clean room with comfortable beds, and a lovely English breakfast on Monday morning. This was our first visit to Whitstable and we certainly struck lucky in our choice of Hotel, it makes a big difference when the staff are so friendly and keen to please.

To whom it may concern, I cannot complement enough the hotel and the staff especially Jackie în Reception, evening Chef & Mrs Patsy for breakfast on departure. We have really enjoyed our beautiful room and the special treat on arrival. We will definitely return! 😊 Kind regards, Luiza&Andrew

Comfortable bed but bedroom was very dusty. Bathroom needs refurbishment or some basic maintenance. Mould on tiles. Poor full English breakfast. Overall not what you expect from Shepherd and Neame hotel. Location was good but having stay in many Shepherd hotels this is the worst. Staff were very good.

This is a review of the restuarant. I booked the Marines restaurant for a 70th birthday for my wife and our family of 9. The earliest time I could get was 2.30 as I was told it was full before. After waiting for about 15 minutes we were asked for our drink choice. Some time later when our drinks came we were asked about our food order. We were told that all the 4 sunday lunch choices had run out. I raised my concerns with the manager but all he said was they had run out as they had more customers than normal. So they were taking walk ins after telling me when I booked it was full till 2.30! This was now after 3pm. So now we all had to make do with pies and fish. The first meals turned up after 3.30. Most of the meals were not of the standard I expected. My 6 year old grand daughter had a burger which was absolutely terrible. The bun was burnt and hard and the meat was like a thin bit of charcoal. So we sent it back. Everyone had finished their meal before it was replaced. By this time she was so upset she only ate a bit of it. We had ordered dessert and when they came we had one dessert not delivered. Once again my grandson this time had to eat alone. By the time we had finished at about 4.30 our carpark had run over the 2 hours and we were the last people in there. On the way out NO APOLOGY. This is the worst experience I've had locally and won't be going back. Trip advisor should have a no stars choice.

I have been to a considerable number of hotels in Europe in the last nine months but the Marine Hotel, Whitstable, stands out like a beacon of Europe hotels. The staff are very attentive and helpful. The rooms are well equipped and of a reasonable. However, it is the food that stands out! We had two delightful, delicious and very reasonably priced dinners and breakfasts in the hotel's dining room. I can thoroughly recommend this hotel to you.

We go to Tankerton often as we like it there . And often walk past the Marine hotel and think it would be lovely to stay there even tho it is very expensive at £200 a night . So we decide to do it for my husbands birthday this Sat just gone .so that it can be for a special occasion with this in mind I booked online for the sun night to have dinner in the restaurant with the sea views and also booked a superior sea view room. This is where the nice stuff ended !. On arrival we realised that this was a dog friendly hotel but as it says on there website there are different rooms kept aside for guests and there dogs , and also a separate restaurant for them . I am not a dog lover but decided to give hotel a chance that was wrong . The room was very small and full of dust and cobwebs shabby furniture that had seen better days stained carpets . I actually collected a bag of dust from on top of the wooden headboard and cupboard. The stench in the corridor of wet dog was disgusting. The corridors were dirty walls had seen better days everywhere needed painting . First night terrible the bed was the worst I had ever slept in !. We went down to breakfast only to share it with dogs as nowhere else open .with people feeding there animals sausages from there plates . The full breakfast was inedible sausage was raw. Streaky bacon was yellow as tho it had been soaked in lard for days horrible smell to it also . I couldnt eat it left it on plate . For £200 you would think they would have proper decent bacon !. At ni oint was I or any other guests asked if we were OK or asked about the food . A door had fallen of a cupboard in orangery and a workman was working on it on a guests table while we were having our breakfast .not very professional at all surely this could of waited till everyone had finished. Staff were too busy chatting at coffee station a few times people had to get up a nd ask for things because they weren't taking any notice . One of the waitresses was petting a guest dog and then preceeded to put toast on a plate for a guest without first washing her hands . The 2nd morning we were given 1 slice of toast each and a dot of butter to share between us which we had to ask for more toast and butter. There was an air-conditioning unit on the wall that had leaked and dried down the wa ll and badly needs the walls painting because of this.the night I booked restaurant we arrived at the sea view restaurant only to be shown to the orangery again with the dogs . I told them I had booked the other restaurant only to be told they don't open it on Sundays I said it had booked ok online and had nothing on there to say about this !!! They said the website is wrong!!!!!! How disgraceful so had to eat again in the dog restaurant 😢 the food was dire inedible rock hard carrots just horrible and this was my husbands birthday. Tables were tacky and sticky the waitress just couldn't be bothered to move . We had aeen durning day guests having a roast and thought we would have that for our meal only to be told they had run aut surely your staying paying guests should have priority over this order more than make sure you have enough.as we had a Seaview balcony so could see the ashtrays below us on table overflowing with cigarette butt's not emptied once while we were there . A really horrible time had we won't be returning and advise our friends and family not to go there. Cannot for the life of me understand people saying g ood reviews . They must have very low food anx higene levels is all I can say !
